TIKI Wine & Vineyards Overview
March 2015
“This winery with vines first planted in 2005 has
very quickly established itself on the wine map.”
Michael Cooper – New Zealand’s pre-eminent wine writer, (May 2012)
1. An introduction to TIKI
Welcome to TIKI, a new and exciting New Zealand vineyard producing a
range of award-winning wines.
A brush with death in an avalanche nearly 10 years ago helped Royce
McKean to see the wisdom of his Maori ancestors care and love for the
land.
To reflect this reverence for the land of his great-great-grandfather,
Ngati Uenuku chieftain Tiki Tere Mihi, Royce and wife Sue named
TIKI Wine & Vineyards in his honour.
TIKI is committed to sustainable winegrowing and to working with the
environment without compromising quality. We care for our vines under
the guiding Maori principles of Kaitiakitanga: guardianship, protection and
preservation of the earth.
SUPPLY: We work with distributors and retailers to provide
high quality New Zealand wine.
COST: Our size allows us to keep our wines cost competitive.
SUSTAINABLE WINEGROWING: We grow our grapes
sustainably with minimum use of agrichemicals, herbicides,
insecticides or pesticides, treating the land with the respect it
deserves.
2. TIKI’s mission
TIKI’s mission is to make sustainably farmed premium
New Zealand wines that are available at competitive prices
in all channels of the global wine market. We compete in
quality and value with the larger New Zealand wine
companies..
3. TIKI’s story
Royce McKean’s family has been farming in New Zealand for over
1000 years.
The first wine produced under a TIKI label was from the 2009
vintage. Since then we have won 34 gold medals/or five star
equivalent and six champion trophy’s for our wines.
Our wines are produced primarily from our vineyards in the Upper
Wairau Valley in Marlborough. We also market small volumes of
Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay and Pinot Noir from Central Otago
in the TIKI product range.
The key varieties we produce are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris,
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Rosé, and Pinot Noir.
4. Our unique position
TIKI Wine & Vineyards is the only producer of wines exclusively sourced from
vineyards in the Upper Wairau Valley.
Our vineyards are located 60km inland from the East Coast and sit at an altitude
of 220-250m above sea level. The vineyards and the style of wines that we
make are strongly influenced by a continental climate in contrast to the more
moderate maritime climate closer to the coast.
Key varieties grown in our Upper Wairau Valley vineyard are
those best suited to the cool climate and unique terroir of this sub-
region and include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
We employ only the best viticulturists and winemakers to expertly
manage the vineyards and to make TIKI’s wines. The viticulture
and winemaking team work closely together to ensure that the
grapes are harvested in optimum condition for winemaking.
The Continental influence allows full flavours to develop through
the high daytime temperature while retaining elegant acidity levels
through the cooler nights. This results in riper, tropical, gooseberry
aromas and flavours with a defined structure, minerality and
acidity, fresh, well-balanced and herbal spectrum.

5. Our family farms sustainably
An important part of TIKIs company philosophy is to be
environmentally responsible and to use sustainable
practices. As a family-owned New Zealand business, we
believe we have a responsibility to ensure that New
Zealand’s natural resources are protected for future
generations. We care for our vineyards under the guiding
principle of Kaitiakitanga: guardianship, protection and
preservation of the earth.
TIKI is a member of Sustainable Winegrowing New
Zealand (SWNZ) which provides a best practice model for
vineyards and wineries involving the sustainable
management of land and resources to meet the needs of
today without adversely impacting the needs of tomorrow.
We graze sheep in our vineyards over the winter months which
reduces the need for machine mowing and also cuts down our
use of herbicides.

9. Brand portfolio
TIKI Estate wines are a blend of the very best parcels of fruit
selected from across our three Marlborough vineyards to make
the very best wine possible. The winemaker aims for purity and
freshness and a food friendly style. This is our flagship and most
widely distributed range of wines under the TIKI brand.
TIKI Single Vineyard wines are a pure expression of our terroir
and place. They are made from a single parcel of fruit that we
believe best represents our vineyards and our unique location in
the Upper Wairau Valley in Marlborough. The soils of these
single vineyards and their unique alpine climate provide
distinctive flavours, fine acidity and elegance to the wines.
TIKI KORO is our premium range of small limited release wines
hand crafted from the very best small parcels of fruit from around New
Zealand. KORO is Maori for grandfather and the wine is named to
honour Royce McKean’s great grandfather Chief Tiki Tere Mihi and
pays homage to the land of his ancestors. This range has two wines, a
Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay and Central Otago Pinot Noir.
Maui Range
The MAUI range of wines takes their name from MAUI, the
demi-god who as legend tells us captured the sun and pulled New
Zealand out of sea.
MAUI was a great adventurer with an inquisitive nature and a
fearless spirit, attributes that are the very heart of the MAUI
range of wines.
MAUI wines are vibrant and refreshing with crisp flavouroffering exceptional value for money.
Alpine Valley is a name synonymous with the vast mountain
ranges in the South Island of New Zealand.
This range of wines reflects the purity, vigour and cool climate of
the south.
Wines in the range are from our vineyards in the Upper Wairau
Valley in Marlborough.
This is the best value range in the portfolio and includes
Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
