As the end of the school year approaches and thepressure to be “summer ready” increases it’s a greattime to get some things out in the air. The desiredbeach body that everyone speaks about is anexpectation that most will not meet. Throw a bikinior swim trunks on and voila you have a bodyperfect for the beach. Now, if you are looking tojumpstart a healthy lifestyle there is a proper way todo it. A balanced diet is the key to healthy living.Losing weight is 80 percent diet and 20 percentexercise. The worst possible thing you could do tochange your appearance is to starve yourself. Thelack of food in your body will actually cause you tostore body fat instead of shedding it. So, stayhealthy and incorporate more greens and lessprocessed foods into your body. At the end of theday you have to be the one happy with yourself noone else can do it for you. Confidence is the key tobeing happy with your body. So hold your headhigh because there is no one else in the world likeyou.Achieving the perfect tan in the summertime is amust for most people. From basking in the sun forhours to lying in a tanning bed multiple times aweek people will try anything to achieve the soughtafter golden glow. But, this exposes you to harmfulUV rays which can cause skin cancer. Instead ofputting yourself at risk get tan the right way.Tanning lotions are a great way to protect you frommost of the harmful rays but still allows you tosoak in the sun. Not only that, but, the companyJergen’s sells a lotion that slowly darkens your skinwithout lying in the sun. Walmart sells this lotionfor $8.64. Is This America?On May 5th a popular artist, Childish Gambino or Donald Glover, released asong and music video called “This is America”. The combination of the videoalong with the lyrics sparked quite the controversy. People have many differentideas on the message that was being sent throughout the video. One of the mostcommon theories is that, throughout the video the singer and a group of youngadults are always dancing no matter where they are, so theorists believe thatthey represent the distraction that America seems to consistently have. Whatmakes this theory even more intriguing is that every time you see them

dancing, if you look closely enough, you can see the chaos happening rightbehind everything, but you are immediately distracted by the movement of thegroup. Another popular theory, is that the video has a lot more to do with thepast rather than today’s society. If you break the video down, you can see thatnumerous things, even down to the wardrobe, resemble that of the past. Onevery important scene is the opening scene, where you can see Glover movingquite strangely and walking up to a man and shooting him. Right before he

pulls the trigger, his stance, oddly enough, resembles a “Jim Crow” caricature.During an interview Glover stated that he was not going to say anything aboutthe meaning of the video and that people can take what they want out of it. Outof all of the theories, which one is the best? Good luck figuring out the “right”

The Weird Girl

One thing I hate the most about this world islabels. Why were they even invented? Whomade that a thing? Who decided to start labelingpeople like we are canned goods?I myself have been labeled as many differentthings. Some of which I will not talk aboutbecause I hate thinking about them nonethelessactually saying them out loud. But I will talkabout this one, 'weird'.What bothers me about being labeled as weird ishow everyone else uses it and how they THINKabout it. When other people say it they aresaying it like I'm someone who shouldn't beapproached. The way they say it with disgust ontheir face is like I'm a new strain of the flufloating around. They say it like I'm a darkentity coming into their life and getting ready tosacrifice them to the underworld. When otherpeople label me as weird, with the context thatthey think of, it makes me hate the word.The way I think of the label 'weird' howevermakes me love the word. In my head it's sort oflike I stand out and I'm not 'normal', which I likebecause I hate fitting in with everyone else. Itgives me butterflies and makes feel like a kidwho just woke up on Christmas morning. I lovebeing called weird, I honestly take that as a hugecompliment. If you were to call me weird todaythere would be a giant smile on my facefollowed with a laugh.Growing up my whole life I have been labeledas many different things. Some I have hatedbecause of the way they made me feel and whatthey made me think. While others I have lovedbecause of the way I turned them into somethingdifferent, something positive. Being labeled as"the weird girl" is one that I've grown to love."The weird girl" label is why I love standing outlike a neon light.-iaa

She kills Monsters

On Wednesday, May 2 Mr. Randolph took all Del Norte HighSchool students to watch a play at Adams State University.The play called “She Kills Monsters” was a spectacle of rawemotion centering on issues that many high schoolers dealwith. The play begins with the introduction of one of thecharacters Tilly. Tilly was a 15 year old girl who was killed ina car accident. Her sister, Agnes, is one of the main charactersin the play who attempts to understand who her sister is.Chuck is a character we meet in the beginning of the play andfollows us throughout the entirety. These characters, alongwith several others, act out Tilly’s Dungeons and Dragonsnotebook to attempt to understand her. It is discovered in theplay that Tilly was attracted to other girls. This causedmassive backlash in her life seeing as she was bullied becauseof it. Tilly was very different from her sister in the beginningof the play and we come to learn that they weren’t so differentafter all. When Agnes makes an effort to understand Tilly shecomes the grips with the fact that she didn’t spend much timeand energy on her. While playing the game she somehowconnects with her sister and discovers that they are prettysimilar. During this time Chuck assisted Agnes on her questfor discovery and was a supportive friend. This play was byfar one of the best productions put on by Adams StateUniversity and I’m glad that students were able to glimpseissues bigger than themselves.- Carlee Leroux

Orange and Black Night

Orange and Black Academics Awards Night is a ceremony thatonly the most hardworking students are invited to. Every year inmid-May a handful of students are invited by National HonorSociety members to receive awards from teachers tocommemorate their hard work during the year. But, this year wasdifferent. Not only were there more than just a handful ofstudents invited, there was about 85 that were awarded total. Onthe honor roll alone there were 65 students awarded. Being on thehonor roll means that you held a 3.0 or better GPA throughout theyear or several years. Not only that, but, the junior class alone hadabout thirty students recognized. That is an astounding numberseeing as it is over half of the total class. This is a proud momentfor Del Norte Schools seeing as academics are often skipped overfor athletics. I hope to see the amount of students awarded riseevery year and the ceremony grow with it.-Carlee Leroux

Wrapping up Spring Sports

Soccer-Team Captain, Sophia McConnell says thatthey are in the top 8 teams on MaxPreps forquarter finals and she says “I think we’ll doreally good at quarter finals. And it’s justbeen really great to see out growths from thebeginning of last years season, to the end ofthis one.” At their last match they won 3-0,and the one before that they won 3-1. Thelady tigers are pretty confident that they’ll dowell.Lacie Jones (Goalie) says that “If we play theway we know how to, I think we’ll go far as ateam. And for out second year having asoccer team, we’ve gone way farther than Ithink anyone could’ve imagined. And I thinkit’s been cool to show everyone how we gofar and beyond.”

Baseball-Christian (2nd Baseman) says, "we are 4 in 10on MaxPreps right now, but I think if we playhard we’ll do good in districts and take a ‘dub’if we get the bats going"Samantha Morgan (Outfielder) said that “Theteam will do good if they work together.” Anddespite the rough season with Tigers Baseball,winning their last few games shows that theirteam does have potential and that they can gofar.

Track-Runner, Emilee Hafelli said that track had onemore meet before state and that, “I’m excited.I’m proud of the team, I think they’ve allworked really hard for this and I think we’ll dogood at state, we’re placed pretty highly.

Runner, Kyle Dahle said that it was a "Prettygood first year. I’m excited for state, I thinkwe’ll do good if we concentrate and not let itgo to our heads.''

In conclusion, Del Norte Tigers have suredisplayed a great work ethic and compassionwhen it came to their sport, their coaches, andtheir teammates. And even though, we mightnot have done as good as we could have, wecan use our past experiences to grow into aneven better athlete. Until next year...-Audrey Plucinski
