Tim, his wife, the children and his mother-in-law are all delighted with the result. “It’sfantastic – exactly what we wanted. for a number of reasons. A key factor was pricebecause their quote was significantly lower thanthe others. That, plus the fact they are a localcompany based in Teddington.”

Another factor that influenced the Syradfamily was the sheer detail that went into L&E(Lofts & Extensions) quote. “From the start, weknew exactly where we were,” Tim explains. “Wegot the quote back quickly, we discussed one ortwo issues very quickly, they were resolved quicklyand they were able to start quickly. It was allincredibly efficient really!”

Tim and his wife also liked the fact theywere encouraged to go and view works inprogress in the neighbourhood and finishedprojects – and also meet the team that wouldbe involved on their build.

“From day one, our whole experience was very,very positive,” he adds. “The team turned upexactly when they said they would, worked hardall day and turned up the next day. Given all thehorror stories you hear about builders, our projectwent like a dream. We didn’t have a single issue.The team were charming, polite and workedexactly when they said they were going to work.There was a large team of people getting the jobdone very quickly.”

The project was completed right on time. “Itran broadly from February to June 2009,” Timexplains. “As much of the work was done outsidethere was very little disruption - and once workstarted on the inside any upheaval was kept to aminimum. Tim Syrad is talking about the urgent needto build a self-contained ground-floor annexefor his elderly mother-in-law, adjoining the rearof their family home.

The Victorian detached house in Teddingtondates back to 1880. “It’s a two-storey propertyincluding an attic room, so it’s essentially threestoreys. I work from home, then there’s my wife,our two children aged 7 and 8, and now mymother-in-law – so before the extension it was abit of a houseful!”

The plan, as Tim explains, was to converthalf the downstairs into a self-contained‘granny’ annexe that would comprise abedroom/sitting/kitchen area plus bathroom.“It would mean losing the original family loungeso we wanted to create an additional room atthe back of the house which would become aspacious new dining / living space attached tothe kitchen and overlooking the garden.”
