Main problems in system integration
Systems are different
• Are built using different languages (C++, C#, Java,
etc.)
• Use different operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.)
• Use different DBs (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, etc.)
Integrated systems gets tightly coupled
The solution proposed by AEP
Web Services
They are based on:
• a standard protocol for data transmission (HTTP)
• a standard language for data representation (XML)
• a standard interface definition (WSDL)
i.e. IDEs are able to automatically generate most
of the code required to connect to a web service
Different HW/SW platforms can be
connected with a lower effort

AEP has implemented a Ticketing System for Arezzo
City
A key feature: only one card to deliver three services
Different companies had to integrate their systems
with the ticketing system to reach the project goal
This integration was accomplished using a Web
Services interface
