“New Life From Old”
One of the sights on my daily walks with the dog is
the neighborhood sump. Now a sump is not much to
look at it, and it’s not something we spend much time
telling our friends about. “Hey, George, have you
seen the sump lately? You really ought to check it
out.” It’s hard to get excited about a hole in the
ground.
I’ve seen this sump in every season, now. Brown and
frozen and dead to the world in wintertime. Lush
and green and teeming with wildlife (as it is now) in
summer.
What strikes me about this sump is the way life re-
turns to it each year. At the appointed time, the
grass turns from brown to green. Collapsed, dead
reeds are replaced by lively green shoots that bear
seeds for the next season.
Yes, it is part of the cycle of life on God’s green
earth. We’re so used to seeing it, that I think we
fail to appreciate the mystery and miracle. What
was once dead is the starting point for what be-
comes alive. God brings life from a hole in the
ground.
The Prophet Isaiah spoke of a similar procession of
new life out of the old as part of God’s provision for
God’s people. “I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and fountains in the midst of the valleys;” he writes.
“I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the
dry land springs of water” (Isaiah 41:18).
The promise here is that God will provide for Is-
rael’s needs—water in the wilderness—as the people
return from exile in Babylon.
God’s promise to Israel is ours too. We all encoun-
ter times when the circumstances of life wear us
down. We tire, get discouraged and start feeling
like that sump looks in the middle of winter. We
need water in the midst of our wilderness.
God brings forth new life from the old. Into our
weary souls, God breathes the Spirit. God’s mercy
and grace are poured out for us afresh. “The
steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies
never come to an end; they are new every morn-
ing…” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
Come and see the springs of living water at Weller.

youth and Bible study. And be blessed!

Summer Mission Trip in Manassas
This month we send a team of six people from Weller on a
mission trip to Manassas, VA. While there, we’ll take part
in the Week of Hope, sponsored by Group Ministries. The
Week of Hope brings missioners from churches all over
the country to help out in community service settings such
as children’s summer camps, nursing homes, or working
with the disabled.
Here’s Weller’s mission team: Kelly Alexander, Alison
McGuire, Emmalee & Josh Miller, Sarah Kells, and Pastor
Bob. We’ll be staying at a Baptist Church at night and
doing the Lord’s work during the day.
The mission team will be commissioned for their work at
the 11:00 a.m. worship service on 27 July. We leave that
afternoon and return on 1 August.
You can help by keeping us in your prayers for that week.

Sunday School
Summer Sunday School will run from June 1st until August
31st. In order to give our regular teachers a summer break,
we will need to have a volunteer teacher and an assistant
sign up for each of our summer Sundays. We will use a One
Room Sunday School curriculum for ages 3-12. The curricu-
lum is planned and easy to follow, with a small amount of
preparation involved to gather extra materials or make cop-
ies for the coming week. Please prayerfully consider helping
out by volunteering this summer. Contact Pat Alexander,
301-271-7164, for more information.
Upcoming Committee Meetings
The C.O.M. and Ad Board
Meetings scheduled for July have been cancelled. The next meetings will be
in August.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!
Our Vacation Bible School was a WOW! That
stands for Workshop of Wonders, the theme
for this year’s VBS. The fun began each night
with an introduction from Rivet the Ant, our
chief “visioneer,” who told us all about imagin-
ing with God in the Workshop of Wonders.
Our puppet ministry told Bible stories and the
children had a chance to get up and move, as
Miss Amy led them in
songs. Our fantastic
crew of VBS teachers
kept up the fun and
learning with lessons,
games and crafts de-
signed to keep the fo-
cus on God’s love for
us in Jesus. e 20 chil-
dren from Weller and
the community took
part this year. WOW!

Mission Central Trip
by Sarah Kells
On Saturday, June 21st a group of people (Henry,
Pat, Kelly Alexander, Wes, Sue and Alec Baugh-
er, Sarah Kells) from Weller United Methodist
Church made a trip to Mission Central. Mission Central is a warehouse
in Mechanicsburg, PA, where they help people around the country and
around the world by preparing relief supplies. They receive supplies by
donations from people and churches. Volun-
teers, like us, put the supplies together in
kits. That is what the Weller group did there; we put together
school kits for children. Each kit was a tote bag and inside the tote
bag were 3 notebooks, 1 pair of scissors, 1 eraser, a pencil sharpen-
er, a box of crayons, 6 pencils and a ruler. Everyone’s job was to go
through the bag and make sure that there was the right amount of
things and to mark out anything that showed it was made in the
USA. They wanted this done be-
cause some countries don’t ac-
cept packages that show they
are from the United States. The trip was very eventful; we
estimated that we put together around 600 school kits
with the help from one other group that was also there
that day.
Summer Sermon Series and Bible Study
Pastor Bob will be preaching on 5 of the Top Parables this summer
beginning in July. During the week, he’ll lead a discussion of the
parables using the book Parables From the Back Side, Volume 1, by
J. Ellsworth Kalas. The book, and the sermons, will look at these
familiar stories from the perspective of minor or unsympathetic
characters, yielding a different view of some of these beloved
stories.
The Bible Study will be Tuesday or Wednesday nights starting 15
July. See the weekly bulletin for the schedule and contact the
church office to sign up.
