Rentals and CateringFall brings us closer to thinking about holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. Did you know that we have great facilities to host catered parties, both small and large, from turkey buffets to finger-food receptions? We also can host business workshops and seminars.

Here is what one recent rental party had to say: “Thanks so much for your help in arranging a very successful workshop for our business group this weekend. It was much appreciated – everyone loved the workshop location, the room was ideal, and the patio a bonus. We had very positive comments on the food and drink provided, so please do thank the chef and helpers. Many participants commented on how good it was.”

Give our Rental and Catering office a call at 250-656-5537, ext. 117, to talk about possibilities and prices, or pick up flyers at the Centre.

Profile: Tish (Ishbel) Williams Tish, as she has always been known here at the Centre, is a gentle but creative force who has been an Activity Leader for as long as the SHOAL Centre has existed. Heading up the Knitting department, Tish recalls coming to Sidney in 2000 and immediately joining Silver Threads.

“I was new here and I wanted to get out and do something,” she says. And indeed she did – first at the old Silver Threads building and now for the last 12 years at SHOAL. In the early years, she teamed up with Hazel Walker to lead the Craft department, and later when Hazel relocated and Chris Moore took over, she agreed to become the Activity Leader for Knitting. “But we are really one department, since most of the members attend both Crafts and Knitting,” Tish explains.

She didn’t start out as a knitter – her first love was crochet which she taught herself from a little book she bought for 10 cents, as a teenager. “I still have that book – there is always something to learn,” says this active and petite woman.

From crocheting, she learned needlepoint and tatting which she did in moments between raising three children and being a busy housewife. But before her children were born, Tish was Matron at the Rosetown Union Hospital in Saskatchewan. “Being a nurse was something I knew I always wanted, even when I was a child. But once I got pregnant, I retired from nursing,” Tish remembers, with that warm smile which captivates those who know her.

It continued to be a busy life – she volunteered at the school her children attended, took up baking and cake decorating, and continued working with needlepoint when she found the time. Eventually the family arrived in Kamloops where Tish resided until the death of her husband. Prompted by her son to move to Sidney, she tried it out for a few months and then made it her permanent home. Once she joined the senior’s centre, Tish’s creativity continued to bloom and she has become a vital part of the SHOAL Activity Leaders.

Come meet Tish on any Tuesday Crafts afternoon (1-3pm) or Friday Knitting session (1-3pm). These friendly and welcoming groups who are always on board for creating a myriad of items for sale at our annual Christmas Craft Show every November, which helps to raise funds for the Centre. We also showcase these departments at our Active Aging Open House every September – this year the Open House is Saturday, September 30. Come down and say hello – Tish and the gang will look forward to seeing you! And remember, Active Aging is realizing you are never too old to learn something new.

After a great summer of Wednesday lunch BBQs, Canada 150th celebrations, and lots of sunshine, we’re buckling down for a busy Fall.

Here at SHOAL it’s going to be exciting with Harvest Hot Dogs at the Tuck Shop – our first time for serving hot dogs since June, and then our annual Open House follows on Saturday, September 30 from 10am - 2pm. Why not stop by for lunch in the Tides at SHOAL Dining Room while you’re at the Open House?

We will also be selling tickets for a great Oktoberfest celebration, slated for Saturday, October 14 in the big auditorium. This should be a really fun evening, with beer available for sale and lots of music. Wear your lederhosen! Of course there will be lots more as the autumn unfolds.

In the meantime, here is one of my most popular meals in the Dining Room. It’s a hot dish as the cooler weather starts setting in. Hope you enjoy it at home – it’s my mom’s secret recipe.

Steak and Kidney Pie

How many pies you make determines how much filling you will need – this recipe is for 6 individual 4 inch pies:

• 1 lb stewing steak, cut up• 1/2 lb beef kidney, cut up• 1 chopped up yellow onion• Beef gravy• Seasoning

Make beef gravy, add all other ingredients. Stir together and put in oven proof dish. Cover and cook until beef is tender – 2 hours on 350 degrees, or a little longer if beef is a little tough.

You can buy the pastry shells or make your own. After the beef and kidney is cooked, spoon into pie shells and cover with a pastry top. Egg wash the top crust and bake in a 375 degree oven until crust is golden brown. Enjoy!

SHOAL Activity Centre Members’ BirthdaysIf you are a current SHOAL Activity Member, you can drop by on the day of your birthday to receive a gift certificate for a free hot beverage and a cookie or scone at the Tuck Shop. Come during the week preceding a Saturday or Sunday if you have a weekend birthday. We would love to acknowledge your special day!

Spotlight On:Spotlight on Active Aging at SHOAL

7

Being connected to a social network is a vital part of feeling involved in community and keeping active. SHOAL offers a wide variety of social experiences, from chatting at our Tuck Shop, to having coffee after table tennis, that provide opportunities for meeting, mingling and having fun.

Volunteering is also a great way to create a social network. At the Centre, we have volunteers that help with everything from selling cookies and coffee at the Tuck Shop to helping set up for special events. We have volunteer activity leaders, medical drivers, volunteer visitors and peer counsellors, job coaches…the list goes on and on.

Meeting new friends – whether you just moved to Sidney or want to expand your social circle – is important for active aging. Not sure how to how to meet and make new friends? Here are 5 tips for those who would like more friends in their lives and are not quite sure how to find them:

• Make eye contact when you greet people – they know that you feel they are important and worth your time.

• Listen more than you talk – remember a conversation is not a monologue.

• Ask questions – “What do you think?” “How did you get involved?” “Where are you from?”

• Watch for others who might be feeling just as you are – smile and say hello.

• Be considerate, respectful and sincere to everyone.

Here at the Centre, you can join a club or a discussion group, sign up for a registered course, attend an art group, listen and/or sing with musical groups. Come see what we have to offer to help you meet new friends!

If you want to know more about SHOAL Centre, come on out to one of our biggest events of the year:

Active Aging Open House • Saturday, September 30 • 10am – 2pmMeet many of the Centre’s volunteers as well as staff. It’s all free (even the coffee and cookies) – you’ll be surprised at how much we have to offer. Visit information booths, take a tour of the Centre, enter for prizes – you won’t want to miss this special day! And first-time SHOAL memberships will be offered at half price on that day only – only $25!
