TIDBITS® DIRECTS YOU TO SOME ODD DOTS ON
THE MAPby Patricia L. Cook When studying maps, whether with an atlas, a fold out map or internet mapping site like Google Maps, some names just kind of jump out at you. Many strange and funny names dot maps around the globe! Tidbits will direct you to a few. •Toponymyis“thestudyofplacenames.”Many places were named for historical events, persons or naturally occurring landmarks. Some have strange names that seem to have come from joking comedians or drunken sailors! • Tostartoffwithalaugh, afunnydoton maps of Quebec is Baie des Ha! Ha! This is a hamlet near the Ha! Ha! River, which has fivedams, allnamedHa!Ha! (numbered1-5).There is also a Pointe des Ha! Ha!, Bridge Lake Ha! Ha!, Park Ha! Ha!, and more! The areas are all interesting and beautiful spots in Quebec. Remember that Canada has both English and French as their national languages. The French meaning of “haha” is “an unexpected obstacleonthepath.”Sortofexplainswherethenamesmust come from. • Another interesting place in easternCanada is Blow Me Down Provincial Park near Deer Lake, Newfoundland. The wind does blow across and over the Blow Me Down Mountains but the park actually has lots of trees to shield vis-itors from the wind. turn the page for more!

ODD DOTS ON THE MAP (continued): • When the town of Deer Lake wasnamed in the late 1800s, itwas named for themany “deer”whooften crossed the local lake. Those deer were actually caribou. •AwhistleontheroofoftheDeerLakePower Plant was placed there during construc-tion in the early 1920s.An air raid siren thatwas brought to Newfoundland from England, it is still used today. Local residents listen for the whistle to know whether they are on time for work, ready for lunch, or ready to end their work day. It is sounded Monday to Saturday but silent on Sunday. The whistle also is blown in honor of several Canadian holidays. • If you do happen to visit BlowMeDown Park and Deer Lake in Newfoundland youshouldalsoheadsouthwestandseeJerry’sNose. Why? Because a place with a name like that should be interesting! • Heading way south, actually to thesouthern hemisphere, there is a lone rock hill in Queensland,AustraliathatisnamedBangBangJump Up! This may make you wonder if a hunter found a large kangaroo years ago! •HatHeadNationalParkinNewSouthWales Australia boasts sand dunes, wetlands, the clear waters of the Tasman Sea and beauti-ful beaches. As opposed to “bed head,”whichmeans bad hair, this is a place where a hat is needed for protection from the sunshine. It is about seven hours south of the Sunshine Coast ofQueensland,Australia. •Therearemanyoddplacenamesinallcountries, including the United States. The state claiming New York City, one of the most fash-ion forward, sophisticated cities in the world, is alsowhereHoosickandOwl’sHeadarelocated. However, there is also anOwl’sHead,Maine.Additionally,MainehasBaldHeadandSucker-ville on the map.

An eight-year-old said,“I’mscared!I’mgoingtocutaroundthecornerandshootthroughthebushesinaminute!”Hedidcutbutdidn’tshootandhiswordslivedoninthe town name! • While all places have histories, thesmall towns of Remote and Boring in Oregon must not have been as lively as Cut and Shoot. No Name, Colorado also missed out on a lively name. • Hot Coffee,Mississippi got its namefrom an innkeeper who attached a sign shaped like a coffee pot to his building to attract busi-nessinthe1800s.Theinn’sbusinessgrewandthe area adopted the name. •TwoEgg,FloridawasoriginallynamedAllison after a family-owned sawmill. Duringthe Great Depression locals began trading eggs for other needs at the general store. The practice saved the town, and the name Two Egg was ad-opted. Tiny little Two Egg is still on the map! • Many strange names dot the map ofKentucky. Monkey’s Eyebrow, Rabbit Hash,Big Bone Lick, and Possom Trot are some of the peculiar ones. However, you have to go to Mis-souri to get to Peculiar and if you are interested in bigger critters like moose, maybe a visit to Eek,Alaskawouldbefun! • For the longest place name in theworld, head down under to beautiful New Zea-land. Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamatea-pokaiwhenuakitanatahu is a hill where a chief of the native Maori tribe mourned the loss of his brother. It means “the hilltop where Tamateawith big knees, conqueror of mountains, eater of land, traveler over land and sea, played his koauautohisbeloved.”

What is the best way tohelpthemgainweightquickly?--JerryS.,viae-mailDEAR JERRY: First, take them to the veteri-narian for a complete checkup. While they may very well be underweight, make sure this is the case, as some dog breeds have somewhat loose skin.Thevetalsocandeterminetheirapproxi-mate age, check for any underlying medical con-ditionsandtestforspecificnutritionaldeficien-cies. From there, work with the vet to put to-gether the best diet for the dogs. It likely will in-cludeamixofdryandwetdogfoods,inspecificamounts, for a certain number of feedings each day. I would not be surprised if they need to be given a nutritional supplement. The vet may be able to sell these to you, or recommend where tobuythem.And,ifneeded,theymaybegivenmedication. It’s very important that they takeany prescribed medicines as directed.IfSadieandTashadonothaveup-to-datevac-cination records, the vet will give them the vac-cinations they need. While healthy dogs generally need to return to the vet just once per year, Sadie and Tasha likely will need to be seen more frequent-ly so the vet can monitor their weight gain and health, and adjust their diet if needed. IcommendyouforbecomingSadieandTasha’snew family -- it sounds like theywill bewellcared for.

Q: How is spaying or neutering good for a pet?
A:Thehealthandbehaviorben-efits are clear. On average, al-teredcats live3-5years longerandaltereddogs live1-3yearslonger with improved health andlessfights.Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle, which usually
occursat5-6monthsold,nearlyeliminatestheriskofbreastcancerand totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. The cancer risk increases with each heat cycle. Neuteringmalesprevents99%ofreproductivesystemprob-lems.Andundesirablemalebehaviorssuchasurinemarking,hump-ing,aggressionandtheurgetoroamarealsoreduced.Thesebenefitsare greatest when the procedures are done on youngsters. Fights, wounds and infections are otherwise inevitable. Spay a dog or cat and eliminate the constant crying and ner-vous pacing of a female in heat, and the messiness of the heat cycle. If you have more than one pet in your household, all the pets willgenerallygetalongbetteriftheyarefixed.

Your liver is a pow-erful organ that is involved in many critical life pre-serving measures. These include regulating blood sugar, clearinganddetoxingchemicalsandtoxins, makingproteins, enzymesand hormones, and hundreds of other essential tasks. That'swhy it is so important toprotectyour liver! And themost common poisons toour liver are alcohol and Tylenol. TheFDAhasfinallydonesomethingbyrequiring the amount of Tylenol in pain meds to bereducedfrom500mgto325mg.Buttheyhavedone nothing to the over the counter acetamino-phen,wherepeoplestillbuy"extrastrength"Ty-lenolat500mg,amarketinggimmickdesignedsolely to salemore product but has no benefitover325mg. Tylenol can be deadly to the liver, es-pecially if taken daily. Chronic intake of acet-aminophen causes a decrease in production of thestrongestanti-oxidant,glutathione,whichismade by the liver. Glutathione is a powerful an-ti-oxidantthatprotectsusfromcancerandinfec-tions,andifit'slevelsarelow,youputyourselfat greater risk of disease. The more Tylenol a pregnant woman takes, thehigherherbaby'sriskofasthma, andthe more Tylenol a child takes under age 2, again the higher the risk of asthma. This is thought to be due to the suppression of glutathione. If I have patients on daily pain meds, such as vicodin, lortab or Percocet, I attempt to get the Tylenol component out of the med since it is helping minimally with pain, but putting the pa-tient at risk of liver disease. If you have an ache or pains, or a fever, takeibuprofeninstead-assumingyourkidneysarehealthy. Itdoesn'thavethesameeffectontheliver.Andremember, achilddoesnotneedTylenol for a common cold, as it does nothing to help kill the virus, and only stresses the liver. Alowgradefever,<101,actuallyhelpskillthevirus,sodon'ttreatafeverunlessitgets>101-then use ibuprofen. To protect your liver, take NAC daily.NAC,orN-acetylcysteine,isanantioxidantthatstimulates the production of glutathione and canhelpprotectagainstTylenoltoxicity. Take500mgtwicedaily. Asanaddedbonus, itwillreduce risk of gum disease, and in patients with COPD or emphysema, helps repair lung func-tion.`Anotherwordabouttheliver-alcohol.Alcoholisverytoxictotheliver,andasweage,ittoler-ates even less. Women should not chronically drink more than a half glass of wine daily, and men more than one beer or wine/day. It places too much stress on the liver to chronically con-sume more. If you have liver disease, such as hepatitis, yourconsumptionshouldbezero.

The Four Chaplains Where were you on Feb. 3? Were you at a ceremony honoring and remembering The Four Chaplains? If so, you were likely in the mi-nority. Panic ensued in the dark and disabled sinking ship. The Chaplains quickly fanned out to try to bring calm to the chaos and fear. The ChaplainswereRev.George Fox (fromPenn-sylvania),RabbiAlexanderGoode (fromNewYork), Father John P.Washington (from NewJersey)andRev.ClarkV.Poling(fromOhio).Storiesof the survivors recount theChaplains’efforts to save others, tending to those injured and getting them above decks, helping soldiers intolifeboats,distributinglifevests--andevenhanding over their own life vests and gloves, knowing theyweren’t going to leave the ship.Thosewhosurvived, floatingintheicywaters, heard the chaplains’ prayers in multiple lan-guages coming across the water. Consumer confidence is evident latelywith the vast amount of buyers entering the mar-ket and the number of sellers putting their prop-erties up for sale. This last week I have witnessed homes listed and receiving multiple showing appoint-ments within hours of hitting the market. Homes that are priced well are selling as fast as they are being listed for sale. Those that are waiting for spring will quickly realize that they are amongmany andthecompetitionwillbefierce. Tax returns provide great incentive tobuyers as the opportunity to have money for closing costs and fun payments as well as to help covermovingexpenses. Page 15Dear Auntie M., How do you handle a person who only see’s theworst ineverything? I have known this woman since grade school and she recently moved back here. She calls me daily to share some new fearordisaster. What’sevenworse is every time I mention planning on doing somethingsheoffersreasons-mostlyhorrible,whyIshouldn’t.I’mreluctanttoanswerhercallsbecauseI always feel so down after talking with her. I think she’sbasicallyagoodpersonbutherfearandnega-tivity are getting me down, too! What should I do? Optimistic in OrofinoDear Optimistic,ThereisasayingthatF.E.A.RisFalseEvidenceAp-pearing Real. Fear or scare mongers use fear as a meanstocontrolandmanipulateothers-theypres-ent ‘evidence’ thatappears real.Fear, likesexandviolence, sells. Observe how pervasive fear is in the news, TV, movies, advertisements, video games, politics, trends, and even some religions. For many people fear has become an unconscious lifestyle. Is she conscious of her negativity and fear? If yes, sug-gest she talk with her physician, clergy, or a thera-pist. She’s probably depressed, and could have achemical imbalance or a medication reaction. You could ask her to look for something positive after anegativestatement,i.e.,’That’sonewaytoseeit,howelsecouldyouseeit?’Pleasedon’targuewithher. Tell her you respect her viewpoint, but choose to be an optimist. She may be unwilling or unable to change. Limit the times you talk with her. Optimists are healthier, happier and live longer. Stay optimis-ticandenjoyyourlife-it’sthebestthingyoucandofor yourself, others, and the world. Please send your questions or comments

sources where appropriate.
