Vibration isolation of structures using Tico Structural Bearings

Tico Structural Bearings provide amaintenance free resilient barrier for theisolation of structures from ground bornenoise and vibration.

Key advantages

• Supplied in virtually any size to suit specificconditions, so that the bearings can be engineered to give the required response.

• Can be supplied for a variety of construction methods from modular bearings on pile caps to continuous bearings in strip footings.

• Bearings can be fitted above or below ground level to suit the engineers’ requirements.

• Available in a number of grades.

• Suitable for a wide variety of applications from large buildings to light internal structures.

• All bearings manufactured from high quality constituents.

General principles

The dynamic behaviour of a mounted system canbe extremely complicated and is affected bymany factors, such as: -

• Stiffness of structure.• Weight of structure.• Disturbing frequency.• Isolation frequency.• Strain amplitude.

To achieve a major reduction in noisetransmission to a structure it is necessary toisolate the structure by the introduction of resilient bearings.

Typical CV/CA installation showing the “fail-safes” and bearing spacing to allow for “bulge”.

The resilient mounting of any structure should beconsidered at an early stage to enable a safe, effective and economic design to be engineered.

It is not possible to give a simple guide to thedynamic behaviour of a resiliently mounted structure, and advice should be sought from a consulting engineer experienced in this field. However, our Tico Structural Bearings departmentwill be happy to assist where possible.

Typical design for a studio or isolated room usingthe box within a box principle.

It will be appreciated that the selection ofbearings for a particular application is dependenton many factors. It is our custom to work closelywith consultants or other authorised bodies toensure that we provide a bearing best suited tothe application.

Supply details

Tico Bondslip bearings are manufactured tocustomers’ specific requirements and willgenerally comprise an upper and a lowercomponent. It is normal to supply the slidingbearings with the upper nylon component havinga larger plan area than the lower resiliently backedPTFE unit. This is to allow for the anticipatedmovement of the bearing and also to act as anumbrella, thus preventing detritus from collectingon the sliding surface. Our Tico StructuralBearings department will be pleased to advise onspecific designs and the selection of materials.

Bondslip identification

It is an advantage, and of considerable benefit tothe installer if the bearings are suppliedindividually identified, particularly when a varietyof sizes are employed. Bondslip units can besupplied pre-marked, each with their respectivelocation or grid position.

Recommended supplementary products fromthe Tico range to complement our variousbearings and seatings

Adhesives and sealantsTico bearings should be secured in position with asuitable high quality adhesive such as:

• Tico contact adhesive rubber based contact adhesive suitable for use on light applications where a well prepared, dry and level surface exists.

• Tico marine epoxy adhesive suitable for arduous applications and in particular for medium and high stress bearings where awell prepared, dry and level surface exists.

• Tico A/SU two-part, cold curing polysulphide filler/sealant: may be used for horizontal filling where a permanently elastic joint is required.

Fire protectionTico resilient seatings and structural bearingshave a degree of natural fire resistance. Ininstallations where “fire sweep” could occur, Tiflexadvises the inclusion of extra fire protection. Our technical department will be happy to assistin the selection of the most appropriate material.

Sealing tapeTico A/ST waterproof adhesive tape is used toseal joins between seatings and infill materials toavoid the ingress of wet concrete during pouring operations.

Resilient collars and washersTico collars and washers are manufactured in arange of materials and configurations. They areused to prevent bridging of the isolation, causedby rigid contact with shear restraint dowels, bolts, etc.

Tico Critical Frequency Pads

www.tiflex.co.ukTiflex Ltd, Tiflex House, Liskeard, Cornwall PL14 4NB. Tel: +44 (0) 1579 320808

For several decades Tiflex have beenmanufacturing materials which were speciallydeveloped to meet the demands ofapplications where low frequencies are thecritical factor. Tico CV/LF materials are able toisolate vibration and provide a naturalfrequency as low as 10Hz. However, TicoCV/LF materials, due to their construction, arefairly inflexible in the sizes at which they canbe supplied.

Tiflex have recognised this and have nowdeveloped a new range of structural bearingproducts which not only can be entirely flexiblein their size and where necessary thickness, but also can achieve a natural frequency underload of 8Hz. This could provide significantadvantages where attenuation of vibration iscritical. This range of products is called TicoCV/CF.

Typical Applications:• Floating Floors• Room within a room systems• Isolated foundations• Where the isolation of low

frequencies are critical
