Principal’s Report

Sara Davey - Academy Principal

This week we have published the latest edition of our extra curricular programme of events The MixX which I am proud to say contains even more activities for students to participate in outside of lessons. As usual there is a fantastic mix of interesting things to be involved in with something for everyone whether you are academic, creative, sporting or just want to explore a new hobby or pursuit. Details of what activities are running on each day can be viewed or downloaded from our website here: http://mountsbay.org/spring-2017

As part of our commitment to giving students the best opportunities to experience world class learning I am pleased to announce that we are once again hosting The Young Americans in the Academy for three days from 20th March. The workshops will culminate in a spectacular performance at the Penzance Leisure Centre, which is always a sell-out. Places for this year are strictly limited If you have not had the chance to see their work or be a part of their programme I would strongly recommend you take the chance to get involved. For more information see the website: http://mountsbay.org/young-americans-2017

I would like to encourage you to take advantage of as many different activities as you can, and remember many of these can be used to count towards your half and full colours awards. To make things even easier we also run a late bus service to enable you to get home afterwards, as long as you have booked your place in advance.

Take the bus home

THEY AREBACK!

Divergent.

‘River of Ink’ is one of our new Bookbuzz books and Lokryn has enjoyed reading this as well as the first five Harry Potter books and is waiting for the sixth one to come back to the library… you know who you are. Let’s get it back in for Monday!

Each week the top students using the app will be awarded a prize. This is not a prize for the students who get the most questions correct; it is an engagement score as we want students to be challenging themselves.

The top 20 students are listed below.

Keep up the great work Year 11.

This week the top form using the PiXL Maths App was 11 Purple who win themselves a box of Cadbury's Heroes.

Mounts Bay Alumni Event - Insight into the IB

We were very privileged to welcome former student Georgia Kennedy, now in her first Year of a Law degree at Exeter University, back to MBA to share her expertise of the International Baccalaureate qualification with current Year 11 and Year 10 students. Georgia studied the IB for two years at Truro College and achieved 36 points - as did the majority of her cohort in 2016 Georgia reported, equivalent in UCAS points to A*A*AA at A Level which is exceptional. This was a valuable opportunity for students and staff to gain an insight into the benefits and challenges the qualification offers with an informed and honest perspective. Georgia attributes her current career pathway to the flexibility that the IB offered her in being able to develop her academic ability, her self-confidence in her potential, whilst ensuring a wide range of career pathways were open to her. We would like to thank Georgia for volunteering her time for our students.

Former Mounts Bay School student, Josh Oliver, has been making an impact in the world of chocolate. Josh attended Mounts Bay School from 2002 to 2007 and is currently second pastry chef at Lanson House in Winchester.

On leaving school in 2007 Josh was unsure of what career to pursue. He attended Truro College for two years and followed this with stints working in both the building and fishing industries, which he hated! Desperate for money he took a job as a kitchen porter at the Lands End Hotel and from there did his NVQ level 2. He then moved to Hampshire and worked at Tynley Hall for two years, before being appointed to his current job at Lainston House in Winchester.

Despite the long hours and hard work, Josh loves his job, and is producing some really fantastic results.

BECREATIVE

In the last week before Christmas, Years 7 and 8 Dance Club, Boys Only Dance and Mounts Bay Dance Company had a great opportunity to work alongside filmmaker Ian Kingsnorth to showcase some of their work this term.

Click on this link below to watch what they had to say about their Dance Experience at Mounts Bay.

http://mountsbay.org/dance-stars/

If you want to see the Dance Company perform live, you will have an opportunity to do this next week, on Saturday 21st January at 7.30pm at The Acorn Theatre Penzance. They will be performing a curtain raiser for the very funny and highly acclaimed "The Mostly Everything People". Tickets available from thelittleboxoffice.com. Come along for a great night out.

If you like what you see, you can have an opportunity to audition for The MBA Dance Company on Tuesday 24th January 3.15 to 4.30pm in the Cube with Suzie West. It will be a chance for you to meet the company and take part in a very informal audition. For more details email [email protected] or [email protected] or just come along on Tuesday.
