Ponteland & District

Riding for the Disabled Association

Who we are?

We are a British Horse Society Approved Riding School based just outside of Ponteland. We have worked

with Slaley RDA Group for the past year teaching children from Priory School. As there was a demand for

more lessons we have decided to set up our own RDA Group “Ponteland & District RDA”. We are lucky

enough to have some great volunteers with lots of experience (all volunteers are trained and DBS

checked). As an instructor myself I have taught a range of children and adults with varying abilities for

many years, I have also completed my RDA Group Coach Certificate.

What we can Offer?

We are excited to be in the position to offer riding sessions throughout the week, based on the needs of

your group. We can also cater for smaller and larger groups as well as private sessions.

An example packages would include:

An hours riding session lasting an hour.

Based on 8 riders, split into two groups (30 minute sessions each).

One group riding and one group grooming ponies or in the waiting area.

This would include horse hire with all safety equipment, hat hire and all personnel assistance.

The total cost for this would be at a discounted rate of £16 per rider. This cost may be subsidised due to

the specific needs of the group.

What’s next?

If you think this may be of interest for you or your group we would love you to get in touch. Our contact

number is 01661 822073 or email address is [email protected].

Kind regards

Sunflowers 3JS have been busy planting sunflower seeds today. The children each planted one in a pot that will be nursed every day. Some were planted out in the wilderness of the flowerbeds! I wonder whose will grow the tallest? We will keep you updated

Hello and welcome to the Family Liaison pages

I would welcome suggestions for anything you would like to see in the Newsletter. I try to include information on leisure activities, training and grant funding as well as PTA updates. It isn’t practical to include all the information I receive as we have students from many different authorities. If there is anything specific you would like me to find out for you, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I have information on benefits, grants and activities in my files which I am happy to share.

Ofsted Parent View reminder. I have spoken to many parents/carers about the above at recent coffee mornings/afternoons. The easiest way to ensure that your views on school reach Ofsted is by completing their short survey. There is a link on the school website under the heading “Parents and Families”. Some of our students use Bradbury View, which means it can take more than a day for letters sent to reach their families. When the Ofsted Inspection occurs, school will be given notice the previous day and there will a short window to complete it. If you do it each academic year (2 per family) it means that your views are available to Ofsted, who will look at this survey ahead of a planned inspection. The easiest way to contact me is by email, or messages can be left with Reception staff at Killingworth Best wishes, Eileen Robinson Email: [email protected] Telephone: 0191 2161811

Grant Funding: Are you looking for information on grants for disabled children and young people? There is a website www.disability-grants.org which may be useful. Alternatively, contact me for information. I have some at school and will assist you to find something suitable if available.

PTA updates:

PTA Why not attend a meeting this year to see how you can become more involved in school life? As with most PTA’s, we play a big role in fund-raising to make school life more enjoyable for your children/young people. Our funds go direct to the school and pay for toys, fun based resources, trips out to name but a few. What we provide does not come from school fees and we ensure that what we pay for enhances school life for the students. We would really appreciate more support from families. We also play a role in improving communication channels between school and home on general issues. However, anything related to your child, their education or related matters should be directed to the class teacher and team in the first instance. The “Mother’s Day Sale”, which was organised by one of our students for a guiding badge was hugely successful and raised £276.25. Congratulations to Merry James for the work she put in to make this the most successful one to date. This is also a joint PTA and Student Council event. We hope to do another Bucket Collection at the Theatre Royal during the 2nd week of the production “The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night Time” in early June and we are indebted to Ian Taylor, Front of House Manager and his team for their continued support of the PTA. Our next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday 2nd May at 10:00 in the Annexe, Killingworth. Parent/Carers may use the school transport drop off area between 09:45 and 12:00 to save congestion on the busy road outside school. Minutes of the AGM are now on the website. If you would like anything passed on to the committee, please do so via the Family Liaison Officer; [email protected]

Gangsta Ganny Relaxed Performance in Sunderland Sunderland Empire are putting on a relaxed performance of David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny on Saturday 13 May 2017 at 10.30am. This production is by the Birmingham Stage Company. Relaxed performances are primarily designed for patrons who may be concerned about attending a regular performance and may find visiting a theatre daunting. They are informal performances that are designed to benefit patrons with addi-tional needs, especially those on the autistic spectrum, those who may make involuntary noises, or anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. Visual Stories are also available before each relaxed performance. For further information and to book tickets, please visit the Sunderland Empire website

Friends Action North East: FANE: FANE is a Newcastle based charity which supports adults with learning disabilities to make and keep friends. Contact a family information: There are plans for a workshop on “Deputyship/Legal Power of Attorney” which is to be held in May 2017. If I have details before the Newsletter is complete, it will be here. If not, please contact them for details and to join their mailing list. Contact a family, a National Charity with a local office offers support through workshops, advice lines and downloadable (hard copies by request) information leaflets on many issues for families with children and young peo-ple with additional needs. Contact details: Telephone: 0191 2136300 Email: [email protected] Website: www.cafamily.org.uk

Workshops/Training opportunities: Most of the queries I have from families are in relation to Benefit entitlement, Wills & Trusts and Power of Attorney/Deputyship. Contact family run regular workshops on these topics. The legal workshops are run in conjunction with “Irwin Mitchell” and I have been told that there will be some on Power of Attorney/Deputyship in May in the North East. They also run sessions on benefits. To make sure that you know when these are happening please email [email protected]

Information:

North East Special Needs Network update: In December the NNSN advised of a potential reduction in services and support due to failure to access funds. They sup-port families of children and young people living in Newcastle upon Tyne on a 1:1 basis and offer telephone support to others in the North East. Since then, they have been working together with Skills for People – an organisation which many of you will know – to explore ways of continuing to support families with disabled children and young people. We are very pleased to let you know that subject to the appropriate checks the two organisations will join forces by June 2017. This merger will make it easier for families to get a range of services through one point of contact. The service will contin-ue to offer information, advice and support, training, and help with Education Health and Care Plans, and support from other parents of disabled children through the Pass it on Parents project. Existing staff from both organisations will provide this service. This change will mean that the support which is currently provided by Northeast Special Needs Network will be able to continue. Our hope is that it will be easier to get more funding to help families in the future. We are also delighted to also announce that Northeast Special Needs Network has been successful in winning a major bid to Newcastle City Council’s Newcastle Fund which will allow us to offer impartial information, advice and support to families with disabled children and young people through:

One to one case work for those who need it most A telephone and email helpline Online information for families Training and other events to help families feel more confident

Bedroom tax changes – new rules are confirmed The government is finally changing the bedroom tax rules to bring them into line with the Supreme Court judgement in the Rutherford case. This means that from 1 April 2017, a bedroom won't be treated as a spare room if it is used by overnight carers who pro-vide regular care to a disabled child. This applies regardless of whether the child is a dependent or an older adult child with disabilities. At the same time the rules are also being changed so that a couple can be treated as needing two bedrooms where they are unable to share due to a disability. See the Contact a Family website for more information
