    PUMP BASES

The more we know about our products, andabout our customers needs, the better we are ableto give quality products and service to ourcustomers. One item that is continually beingdiscussed is the best base required for anyparticular job. The attached pictures illustrate howstrongly Peerless feels that a heavy rigid base isrequired on all installations.

    * * *

1 CAST IRON BASESThe best base support for a centrifugal pump

and driver is a cast iron base. A cast iron basesuch as Peerless furnishes, is rigid, self-supporting, distortion free, and provides adampening effect on vibration and noise. It insuresthe minimum deflection of the pump and maintainscoupling alignment longer than any other base. Itis important that the base be of sufficient mass tosupport pump and driver; Peerless- made basesare your assurance of this.

Fig. #1 shows clearly the Peerless cast iron driprim base. Notice that the drip rim is around the top ofthe base. It channels all leakage to a collection basinunderneath the pump. This basin is tapped for easypipe-off to a sump. The base is equipped with alarge grout hole that allows easy grouting of thebase when necessary on the job site. This base issymmetrical and has good eye appeal.

Cast iron drip rim bases of this type arefurnished as standard with Peerless type A Pumpswith NEMA rated motors. This means 150 HP,3600 RPM frame 445US and smaller. On largerpump drivers the factory must be contacted todetermine the availability of a cast iron base.

Cast iron bases are normally more expensiveto make. That is, unless considerable effort hasbeen given to utilization of the same base on asmany pump models as possible. Peerless hasmanaged to standardize on 12 sizes of cast ironbases and with new pattern equipment, canfurnish these bases for less money than any othertype of base. Competition must add considerablefor a cast iron base and therefore Peerless shouldspecify cast iron on the building trade, industrialpumps with NEMA size drivers, etc. This certainlyis an advantage to the customer as it helps toinsure better value.

Aqua Line pumps are furnished as standardwith cast iron bases, and the new TUAP-TUASpump is furnished as standard with cast ironbases. PB pumps may be obtained with cast ironbase. In the multi-stage pump line, cast iron basesmay be used, however, the factory must beconsulted to determine what size pumps andmotors can be fitted with the cast iron bases.

2 STEEL BASESThe words steel base mean different things

to different people. A recent poii of many of ourfield representatives indicated that when theword steel was used, they thought of fabricatedsteel, channel type steel, structural steel, andbent steel plate. Two of our major competitorsbelieve in using bent steel plate and they openlystate in their literature that the base must besupported by a rigid pedestal and grout. They

say that the purpose of a baseplate is merely totie the equipment together and support mustcome from either the pedestal or the grout.PEERLESS FEELS THAT REGARDLESS OFWHAT TYPE OF BASE IS USED, THE BASEMUST BE CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING BOTHTHE PUMP AND DRIVER WITHOUT ANYADDITIONAL SUPPORT.

    2 Revised 07/06

When Peerless in the sales manual says, fabricated steel base we are referring to base as

shown in illustration #2. This is a bent steel basewith closed ends. Please note that it is made ofheavy steel stock and where necessary, it will bereinforced by welding, as can be seen in the grouthole of this picture. This base is designed so that itcan support the pump and driver by means ofvibration springs underneath the tiedown lugs. It isheavy, however, since it is made from fabricatedsteel. This base is used on all sizes of pumps thatwill not accommodate the cast iron base.

3 FABRICATED STEEL, DRIP RIM TYPEWhen a fabricated steel drip rim type base is

required, then we will furnish the base as shown inFigure #3. Please notice that this has an outsidedrip rim. The rim is designed to channel allleakage to one end of the pump where threadedpipe connections are available for lead off ofwaste water. In both types of fabricated steel

bases we use two types of foundation lugs. Thesedrawings show an external type of foundation lugthat is welded to the base. We also furnish thesebases where foundation bolt holes have beendrilled through the bed of the baseplate. This willpermit tie down without use of the foundation lugs.

Please notice that while these are fabricatedsteel bases, they are of extremely heavy design. Itis very obvious that it is not Peerless intention tofurnish flimsy sheet steel and expect the customer

rigidly grout the pumps in place to support the base

Peerless believes in heavy massive bases atall times to protect the customers equipment andcertainly our standard fabricated steel basesillustrate this concept of base design.

    4 STRUCTURAL STEEL BASE

Where job requirements are such that extremestress or weight is involved, then a heavystructural base will be used. This base is not as

attractive as the fabricated base but it doesillustrate extreme ruggedness. These bases wouldnormally be used where large engine drives arerequired on big heavy pumps. This base isexpensive to build and therefore the customershould be aware that when he specifies astructural steel base, it will cost a great deal morethan the cast iron or the fabricated steel base.

Many specifications ask for a structural steelbase where it is very obvious that this is notneeded. The purpose of this letter is to inform ourcustomers of the types of bases furnished onhorizontal split case pumps. This should indicatethat the cast iron drip rim base should be used

and specified wherever possible. On sizes largerthan will accommodate the cast iron base, thenthe fabricated steel base should be used. Only incases where extreme weight or torque is involved, should the structural steel base be used. Thestructural steel base is by far the most expensiveof any of the bases. Good customer relationshipshould permit the use of the fabricated steel base

whenever a steel base is required.

It is the sincere wish that this information andthese pictures will aid in gaining the confidence ofthe customer. Once again, Peerless is emphaticthat any base should be heavy enough, rigidenough, to take and support the pump at all timeswithout the need of external grout or support. Witha thorough understanding of this basic belief, customers can place their confidence in Peerless.
