ORMOND COLLEGE THWAITES GUTCH RESEARCH FELLOW IN PHYSIOLOGY This fellowship combines a research role at one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes with an opportunity to live and teach in the largest residential college of the University of Melbourne. Ormond College offers community living and an extensive learning program to approximately 500 students. The student community includes students from all faculties of the University, including undergraduate Biomedicine and graduate MD students. The Ormond Learning program includes an extensive range of tutorials, faculty-focused events, guest speakers, career and work-readiness activities, ethics, design-thinking, and community engagement opportunities. The College encourages curiosity, cross-disciplinary learning, and student-led learning. The Learning team are particularly focused on facilitating place-based learning that arises from relationships between students, and between tutors/fellows and students. One-on-one conversations between tutors/fellows and students are an important part of what we do. In a tertiary environment where engagement in most of the learning programs is voluntary, our rich learning culture has been achieved through working closely with students and engaging excellent teachers. The Thwaites Gutch Research Fellowship in Physiology was established by Dr Alexander Hopkins Thwaites and Dr Richard Clinton Gutch. An endowment for the Fellowship was bequeathed to the College by Dr Thwaites in 1956. The Fellowship seeks to support the research endeavours of the Fellow, and to bring their expertise and experience to the students of Ormond College. The Thwaites Gutch Fellowship is a residential position for the full five year term. Partners and small families can be accommodated. Responsibilities The Fellow will devote 20% of their time to supporting and participating in the College’s learning program, with 80% available for their work with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. The research undertaken as a Walter and Eliza Hall Institute Fellow will be overseen by staff at the institute. As a Fellow of Ormond College, the successful applicant will also work with the Associate Director, Academic Learning to continue the development of the medical and science learning programs at Ormond. • Work with the Ormond staff and students to provide high-quality events and speakers, and to integrate the medical program with the College’s wider values and aims

• Participate in Tutor Meetings (6 per year) which focus on sharing and improving teaching practice

• Seek continuous improvement in learning outcomes by responding to student and peer feedback on their teaching

• Work with Ormond medical alumni to involve them in the learning program in close association with the Advancement Office

• In non-teaching periods, engage in other projects to support the Learning Team and the college community as agreed

Community

• Be a resident of the College for the duration of the Fellowship • Be a positive and active member of the Senior Common Room, including attending social

events and all formal meetings • Attend formal dinner in Hall with the Master and SCR at least once per week during the

teaching semesters • Attend ceremonial dinners of the College (seven per year) and other key community events • Model the values of the College, and foster a learning and community life based on integrity

and respect for all of its members Please note – at Ormond College, the residential agreements with tutors and fellows are managed separately from teaching or fellowship arrangements. The Fellow will pay the standard rental for an apartment at the College. One bedroom apartments will be available at the commencement of 2016. Selection Criteria Essential

• Excellent teaching practices • Ability to provide academic support, guidance and leadership to students • Availability to teach and meet with students on (weekday) evenings • Capacity and desire to engage in dynamic, flourishing community life
