The Board of Trustees of the Troy Historical Society (THS) and the staff of the Troy Historic Village (Village) are pleased to present this Annual Report for our Fiscal Year Ending (FYE) June 30, 2018.

Throughout this year our programs and services were focused on visitor and community engagement and how each initiative enhanced life-long exploration of history and cultural heritage among the diverse residents in Troy and Southeast Michigan.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICESYouth education programs, our most important service, reached classrooms in five counties. Over 13,000 elementary and middle school students, teachers, and chaperones participated in hands-on learning at the Village and through our “History to You” outreach programs. All of the onsite and outreach programs meet Michigan Social Studies curriculum objectives and include activities that make learning fun and memorable. This year THS also offered our first high school Constitution Café. Cafés are a free service made possible by a grant from the Oakland County Bar Foundation. They are a terrific way for teens to discuss the meaning and relevance of the US Constitution in their lives and in the 21st century. We look forward to continuing and expanding this important outreach.

The Village staff introduced Grown-up Group Gathers, a new service designed specifically for seniors who gather at different regional community centers or who live in residential settings designed for older adults. Groups can select from a menu of program options to be presented at their local center or they can visit the Village for a presentation and a modified tour of our historic buildings.

A highlight of 2017 was THREADS, an outstanding exhibit of 147 vintage and contemporary quilts displayed throughout the Village. The quilts showcased the artistry of quilters from five regional guilds and vintage textiles from private quilt collections. THREADS also included four sold-out performances of an original site-responsive theater production. The play THREADS was based on immigrant stories compiled during our 2016 Oral History Project. Audience members moved from scene to scene and participated with the actors as the play revealed cultural traditions and values that have woven us together as a nation of immigrants. THS is grateful to the Michigan Humanities Council and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for their financial support of THREADS.

It was a record year. 26,000 people visited the Village, attended a THS event, or experienced a Village outreach program this year. Volunteers contributed 8,450 hours of service – the equivalent of four full-time employees. They assisted with programs and events, office work, curatorial duties, marketing, and maintenance of buildings and grounds. The Village also hosted 32 private events including weddings, family reunions, birthday parties, and anniversary celebrations, fulfilling our goal to serve as a welcoming center for community development and social interaction.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS• Preservation of the Village’s historic buildings required the physical and financial resources of THS and the City of Troy.

• The City appropriated $450,000 to complete the exterior and interior restoration of the 1837 Niles-Barnard House. During 2017/18 a project team of personnel from the City of Troy, SAFEbuilt Inc., OHM Advisors, Hopkins Burns Design Studio (architects), Peter Basso Associates, and THS completed the schematic design and construction drawings for the restoration. THS volunteers removed carpets, cabinets, and other modern interior elements to facilitate structural evaluations and prepare the building for rehabilitation.

• The City retained Klepinger Construction, a firm skilled in restoring historic doors and windows, to repair or replace the deteriorated exterior doors on four buildings in the Village.

• THS staff and corporate volunteers from FCA Group rototilled and completely reseeded the “Village Green” lawn.

• Volunteers built a new wood shed behind the Log Cabin.

FINANCETHS successfully completed its seventh fi scal year operating the Village through its renewable management agreement with the City of Troy. The current agreement will end in 2026. Robust programs, grants, rental fees, Village Store sales, donations, and sponsorships contributed to gross receipts of $493,000 with net income of over $30,000. THS successfully raised $25,000 in new restricted donations for a second year to complete our required match for a $50,000 challenge grant awarded to THS by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2016. The total $100,000, which includes grant and matching funds, will be expended between 2019 and 2021 to expand outreach programs and to enhance fi scal sustainability of Village operations.

GRANTS• The following foundations awarded grants to THS in FYE 2017:

• Kresge Foundation Detroit awarded THS a three-year Arts Support Grant for general operations of $19,000 in 2016. The second installment of $6,000 was received.

• Michigan Humanities Council awarded THS a $15,000 Humanities Grant to enhance the Village as a regional Humanities Hub through engaging arts and culture programs.

• Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs awarded THS a $15,000 grant to support general operations.• Oakland County Bar Foundation provided $4,040 to support monthly “Constitution Cafés”.• The Phillip and Elizabeth Filmer Memorial Charitable Trust awarded THS $10,000 for History to You

outreach programs and new program development.• Allegra’s FOOTPrint Fund provided $500 for printing that was applied to the THREADS exhibit catalog.

The City of Troy also allocated $100,000 to support operations in the Village. The Troy allocation will be included with grant awards in our annual audit.

Revenue from the Troy Traffi c Jam, our largest fundraiser, and income from memberships and programs have increased signifi cantly in the past four years.

THS worked with the North Woodward Community Foundation to establish a new permanent Endowment Fund to benefi t the Troy Historic Village. Private donations plus matching funds from the Troy Community Foundation totaling $15,000 were used to initiate the fund. THS will encourage legacy giving to grow this endowment.

COLLECTIONSCurator Elizabeth Thornburg maintained the Village archive and object collections with the support of twenty volunteers who contributed 1,142 hours of service. These volunteers, including 5 Wayne State University interns, scanned documents and photos, assisted with the installation of the THREADS quilt exhibit, and developed additional finding guides for the Wattles Family and Barnard Family collections. The Curator also provided THS staff with artifacts and primary source materials to enhance their education programs and made significant updates to the collections database.

Community members loaned materials to the Village for the THREADS exhibit and donated objects to the THS Education Collection for use in programs. However, no new donations were accessioned into the permanent archival or objects collections and no collections materials were deaccessioned during FYE 2018.

COLLABORATIONSTroy Historic Village continued its collaboration with the Troy Nature Center to jointly present Maple Syrup Time. The Troy Garden Club continued its volunteer and financial support of the Village providing plant materials and volunteer gardeners to maintain and update flower and herb beds. 880 visitors, vendors, and volunteers attended the annual Garden Club Walk Boutique in the Village. Through a new collaboration, THS and Beaumont initiated a walking club to advance fitness and explore history and heritage on foot in the local community and the greater Southeast Michigan region.

LOOKING FORWARDThe Troy Historical Society will embrace new levels of community engagement in 2019. The restoration of the 1837 Niles-Barnard House is scheduled for completion in June 2019. This wonderful building will provide a unique venue in Troy for programs, workshops, meetings, and receptions. We look forward to welcoming other organizations, businesses, and private parties to hold classes and events in this historic gathering space.

THS will roll out new video guides featuring different interpreters in each building and audio guides to the Village translated into Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Indian languages commonly spoken in our regional community. These new visitor amenities, accessible by smart phone, will make the Village more welcoming, interesting, and inclusive for our guests.

The Troy Historical Society recognizes that the role of museums has changed. People can access historic facts on their smart phone. They use cultural institutions like the Village as places to meet, socialize, and experience history, not just read labels. So THS is excited to provide this progress report detailing our efforts to create wonderful experiences for those in the Village as well as in the community.
