Schedule – meaning
Schedule is the name given to a list of questions to which responses are obtained from the respondent by the investigator or in a face to face contact.
It is the name usually applied to a set of questions which are asked by the interviewer to the interviewee.
A schedule is different from a questionnaire in that it is administered personally to respondent or a group of respondents, while the questionnaire is usually send by mail expecting return of responses by mail.

interview because it is only a part of interview and not the whole of it.
The pre planned questions to be asked by the interviewer is only one part of the total process of interview
Schedule - Relevance• Schedule has more relevance in interviews.• Interviews and schedules are ordinarily quite direct.• In the interviewer’s questions may have to be carefully handled , respondents can , and usually will , give much informations directly.• for the most part interviews and schedules have been used simply for gathering so called facts.• interview schedules are subject to the same criteria of reliability , validity ,and objectivity as many other measurements
Kinds of schedule informations and itemsThree kinds of informations are included in most schedule. 1. Face sheet ( identification ) informations2. Census type ( sociological ) informations 3. Problem informationTwo types of schedule items are in common use. They are; 4. Fixed alternative ( or closed ) 5. Open end ( or open )
Fixed alternative items Fixed alternative items , as the name indicates
offer the respondent a choice among two or more alternatives. These items are also called closed or poll questions.
The comments kind of fixed alternative item is dichotomous ; it asks for yes – no , agree-disagree and other two alternatives.
Often a third alternative, don’t know un decided is added.
Open end items Open end items are an extremely
important development in the technique of interviewing.
Open end questions are flexible, they have possibilities of depth, the enable the interviewer to clear up misunderstanding (through probing).
Characteristics of a good schedule The way of constructing a good schedule
and the analysis and interpretation of the data gathered through a schedule are not very different from a questionnaire.
Its administration in a face to face situation is, however different from the administration of questionnaire.
Merits of interview schedule Most natural tool ( kind of instrument that has
questions or items to which individual respond ) Schedule it seems to be associated more with self
administered instruments that have items of the closed or fixed alternative type.
The collected data through schedule may be stored anonymous, honesty and frankness.
It is economical, its cost is ordinarily a fraction of that of interviews.
Demerits of interview schedule The self administered instrument (when mailed) is low
percentage of returns. It may not be as uniform as it seems. Same questions are frequently repeated to different meanings
for different people. If only closed items are used , the instruments displays the
same weakness of closed item discussed earlier. the cost in time , energy ,and money are very high degree of
skill necessary for its construction are its main drawback.
