High Altitude... After a lull in proceedings during mid-afternoon, adaughter of Galileo (Ire) with all the right connectionscranked up the pressure. Staffordstown Stud's hip 404is out of Kirsten Rausing's Altitude (GB) (Green Desert),who managed only to win a lowly maiden onSouthwell's fibresand, but who more importantly is ahalf-sister to that owner-breeder's Group 1-winningAlzao duo of Alborada (GB) and Albanova (GB).Opportunities to acquire female descendants from thisfamed Alruccaba (Ire) dynasty are few and far between, and Henry Beeby took his usual positive stance as heinstigated the bidding. Proclaiming the page to feature"the pedigree of the book" and to have "everything youwant,@ he mustered a i100,000 starting bid. In theend, it was Sir Robert Ogden, who had taken home theday one topper by Montjeu (Ire), who won the biddingwith i300,000 offer. As during Tuesday=s openingsession, Racing Manager Barry Simpson tookinstructions by phone. AShe=s a really good filly from anoutstanding pedigree,@ Simpson said. AHopefully, shecan run as well as her pedigree suggests. She was afilly we liked a lot from the moment we saw her, although we were probably at our limit there.@

Deja Vu For Montjeu... Montjeu (Ire), responsible for Tuesday=s topper, provided the joint top-priced colt yesterday in OaklawnStud=s hip 318. The March foal is a full-brother to thisterm=s well-regarded maiden winner Rougemont (Ire)from the family of 2004 G1 Irish Derby hero andMG1SW Grey Swallow (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}). DemiO=Byrne saw off David Redvers with a bid of i200,000and was on top again soon after when going toi170,000 for hip 320, a son of Galileo (Ire) consignedby Roundhill Stud. That February foal is out of awinning full-sister to 1997 G2 Flying Childers S. heroineLand of Dreams (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who isherself the dam of this term=s G1 July Cup and G1Haydock Sprint Cup victor Dream Ahead (Diktat {GB}).The renowned vet went on to complete a quick-firetreble when usurping trainer Ger Lyons at i190,000 fora daughter of Duke of Marmalade (Ire) from MountainView Stud. Presented as hip 331, the April foal is outof a winning daughter of Born Gold (Blushing Groom{Fr}), herself a full-sister to 1992 G1 Prix MarcelBoussac and 1993 G1 Coronation S. heroine GoldSplash and the dam of 14-time Group/Grade 1champion Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) and recent G1 PrixVermeille victress Galikova (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}). AShe=s afantastic filly,@ O=Byrne said of the latter. AShe is anoutstanding individual from the immediate family ofGoldikova, and you couldn=t ask for any more. She=s bya very exciting stallion who was a top-class racehorseand must have every chance of making it when hisrunners hit the track next year.@

Pinhooking Success For Knockenduff... After the early fireworks, Shadwell=s name was absentfrom the returns until later in the afternoon when AngusGold fired a i170,000 winning salvo to deny EdSackville, alongside trainer Jeremy Noseda, for a fillyfrom the second crop of Hard Spun. That son of Danzighas done well in Europe this season, with his highlightbeing his G2 Superlative S.-winning and Breeders= Cup-bound son Red Duke. Knockenduff Stud=s hip 344 is anOntario-bred half-sister to last term=s Listed PrixPoliceman winner Paris Vegas (Maria=s Mon). She wasthe only lot by her sire in the catalogue. She is also fromthe family of the 2006 G1 Prix de Diane victressConfidential Lady (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and three-timeU.S. champion Affirmed. The transaction marked asignificant pinhooking return for the vendors on an outlayof $70,000 at last year=s Keeneland November Sale.

Significant First Approaches... Those involved with the first-crop sires Tamayuz(GB), Duke of Marmalade (Ire) and New Approach (Ire)enjoyed a jamboree over the two days, with the lattermaking a particular mark on yesterday=s action. He wasalso responsible for the sale of hip 336, a CroomHouse-consigned filly whose siblings include the 2004champion Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB})--now thedam of this year=s top-class 2-year-old Requinto (Ire)(Dansili {GB})--to Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock fori150,000. AShe=s a good-looking filly by a sire who isgetting good-looking stock,@ Peter Doyle said.AConsidering her pedigree, I thought that she was goodvalue. She=s been bought for a client, and a trainer forher will be decided later on.@ Another first-crop sire with a high-profile purchaseagainst his name yesterday was Henrythenavigator, who had only three catalogued. His daughter of theGroup 1 winner Valery Lady (Arg) (Roy) consigned byAirlie Stud as hip 365 was bought by WilliamJohnstone for i115,000.

Merry Gets Danehill Dancer Colt for Hay... Agent Hugo Merry bagged a Rock of Gibraltar filly--hip 52--for just i20,000 on day one when acting onbehalf of Dr. Jim and Fitri Hay. He had to go further forthe rising force among the European owner ranksyesterday when paying i170,000 for a Grove Stud-consigned Danehill Dancer (Ire) colt. The sire of thisterm=s Group 1 winners Planteur (Ire) and Dancing Rain(Ire) is usually prominent at this auction, and his hip243 is a son of 2001 G3 Prix d=Aumale victress Quad=sMelody (Ire) (Spinning World), herself a half-sister tothe MGISP Bonapartiste (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}). AHe was agood colt,@ Merry commented. AI thought that therewas plenty to like about him, and he=s out of aprecocious, Group 3-winning mare. I=ve bought him forDr. Jim Hay, and a trainer for him will be decided onlater on.@ Merry later fended off Ross Doyle to acquireLynn Lodge Stud=s Teofilo filly for i180,000. Offeredas hip 283, the chestnut is a half-sister to last year=sG2 Railway S. winner Formosina (Ire)(Footstepsinthesand {GB}) from the family of theMGSW Tumbleweed Ridge (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and2006 G2 Queen Mary S. victress Gilded (Ire) (Redback{GB}). The deal represented a threefold return for EddieO=Leary=s nursery, which paid i60,000 for her at lastyear=s November Foal Sale here. Merry had beenalongside trainer Brian Meehan earlier when ai320,000 bid failed to get the aforementioned Archfilly (hip 237). AShe=s been bought for Andrew Rosen, who has been a longstanding client of Brian Meehan=syard and that is where she will be going into training,@Merry said of the Teofilo miss. AAndrew has had somevery good fillies over the last few years and, hopefully, she will follow suit.@

Bobby On the Beat... Agent Bobby O'Ryan snapped up a pair of fillies whowere in demand. After paying i165,000 forCastlemartin Stud's hip 382, a daughter of Acclamation(GB) who is the first foal out of listed winner Yarastar(GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) from an O'Reilly family on therise, he went to i150,000 for another sought-afterMarju (Ire) representative. From the draft of Joerg andDiana Vasicek's Kenilworth House Stud, hip 420 is afull-sister to 2008 G3 Park Express S. winner Marjalina(Ire) and half to the recent listed winner What a Charm(Ire) (Key of Luck). One of the sale's finest pinhooking successes waswitnessed after Peter Doyle went to i145,000 forYeomanstown Stud's hip 436, a son of GayO'Callaghan's leading first-season sire Dark Angel (Ire).Bought for just i18,000 at the November Foal Salehere, he is out of a half-sister to GSWs Budai (Ger) (DaiJin {GB}) and Bernardon (Ger) (Suave Dancer). That sale came moments after David Redvers securedanother of the Danehill Dancers, this time from theCamas Park Stud consignment. Hip 431 is a 3/4-sisterto 2006 G2 Champagne S. winner and 2007 G1 2000

Guineas runner-up and sire Vital Equine (Ire) (Danetime{Ire}) and she was sold for i140,000. That price wasmatched on three other occasions, with the first beingCamas Park=s hip 278, a Proud Citizen filly from thesame Dream Ahead family as the aforementioned hip320. SF Bloodstock was the name on the docket. AShe=s from a high-class and very current pedigree, and Dream Ahead has already proved himself achampion at both two and three,@ said SF=s Tom Ryan.AI had three or four fillies picked out here, and she wasthe one I liked best of all. She=s a filly who could workboth in Europe and America, and we=ll just have to seewhere she starts off. We were delighted to get her.@ The second to fetch that price was another from theYeomanstown draft in hip 412, a Verglas (Ire)full-brother to Sheikh Hamdan's 2008 G2 Railway S.runner-up Alhaban (Ire) from the family of theoperation's stalwart Group 1 performer Maraahel (Ire)(Alzao) who predictably was a further purchase forShadwell. Johnny McKeever was responsible for the finalmember of the i140,000 club when snapping upanother of Camas Park's offerings. Hip 445 is a HolyRoman Emperor (Ire) half-brother to the MSW & GSP(Indian Ridge {GB}), who is also the dam of black-typegetters Swiss Diva (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Swiss Franc(GB) (Mr. Greeley) and Swiss Dream (GB) (Oasis Dream{GB}).

Fireworks At the Finale... As the session drew to a close, a trio of yearlings

made sure that proceedings did not end with a

whimper. Kicking off the late flourish, BBA Ireland went

to i200,000 for hip 454, a son of the popular Duke of

Marmalade who capped a successful session for Camas

Park Stud and who shared the top-priced colt honors

with the aforementioned Montjeu. Out of the Listed-

placed Bowstring (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the February

foal descends from the Classic-winning matriarch Sarah

Siddons (Fr). Hot on the heels of that was the sale of

hip 456 to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for i180,000.

Consigned by Denis Brosnan's Croom House Stud, he is

a son of Cape Cross (Ire) from the excellent family of

Henrythenavigator and Listen (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) et al.

Completing the trinity of last-gasp highlights was hip

458, a daughter of Dalakhani (Ire) from the Nagles'

Barronstown Stud. Out of GSP Briolette (Ire) (Sadler's

Wells), she is therefore a granddaughter of the prolific

top-class producer Cocotte (GB) of Pilsudski (Ire) fame.

Hugo Merry, who stepped in for the blueblood,

prevailed with a bid of i160,000.

Just Missed... This year=s renewal has so far failed to match last

year=s vital figures, with no eye-popping top lot to live

up to the i950,000 benchmark of 12 months ago.

While the clearance rate has inched up to just over

80%, the average of i61,544 is down by 6% and

median of i42,000 has fallen by nearly 7%.

    Tomorrow=s lower-key session begins at 10 a.m. Full

NATHANIEL OUT, MARVEL IN? The final line-up for Sunday=s G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arcde Triomphe was still in flux yesterday, with thecountdown to today=s supplementary stage promptingsome potentially important changes of direction. Chiefof those was the suggestion from the John Gosdenstable that the recent G1 St Leger winner MaskedMarvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) could be added to theLongchamp feature after Nathaniel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})was finally ruled out due to the dry forecast. BjornNielsen=s Sept. 10 Doncaster Classic hero would swellthe final field beyond its current total of 14 runners ifconnections take the plunge and pay the i100,000fee. AWe have had someone walk the ground for us atLongchamp and, as it is, Nathaniel is not going to runand he will be rerouted to the G1 Champion S. [atAscot Oct. 15],@ Gosden, who also scratched ArcticCosmos (North Light {Ire}) yesterday, told the RacingPost. AIn the past couple of days, given the likelysurface, we have been considering supplementingMasked Marvel instead, but we will make a finaldecision on Thursday morning.@ Two who are almost certain to be supplementedtoday are the Rothschild Family=s July 14 G1 Grand Prixde Paris hero and Sept. 11 G2 Prix Niel runner-upMeandre (Fr) (Slickly {Fr}) and Gestut Burg Eberstein=simpressive July 24 G1 Deutschland-Preis and Sept. 4G1 Grosser Preis von Baden heroine Danedream (Ger)(Lomitas {GB}). All the main contenders stood theirground yesterday, with Aidan O=Brien cutting his teamto four and leaving in the June 26 G1 Irish Derbyone-two Treasure Beach (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Seville(Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) as intriguing potential back-up to SoYou Think (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and St NicholasAbbey (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). As expected, Godolphinalso withdrew Casamento (Ire) (Shamardal), leaving theoutfit with no Arc representative for only the sixth timesince Lammtarra=s watershed triumph in 1995.

The hard-knocking In Summation (Put It Back) tookThomas Moore and Judy Livingston=s Waterford Stableto new heights when he won the GI Bing Crosby H. indramatic fashion in 2007 and carried the couple=s colorsto a respectable fourth-place finish in the GI Breeders=Cup Sprint in 2008. With his smart debut victory at Belmont Parkyesterday, Summer Front (War Front) has a ways to goto displace In Summation as the stable=s best and mostproductive runner, but the sky is the limit, according tobloodstock agent Steve Young, who signed the ticketon the colt at this year=s Keeneland April Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. At $475,000, he was hissuccessful young sire=s second most expensive juvenileof 2011, and was third-highest-priced youngster at thesale, just behind another son of War Front bred on theexact same cross at Summer Front that was purchasedfor $485,000 by Stonestreet Stables. Bred in Kentucky by Graceville Breeding, SummerFront came to Keeneland with large shoes to fill from apedigree standpoint. His older half-sister Laragh, fromthe first crop of Tapit, was one of the outstandingjuvenile fillies of her generation, winning the GI Hollywood Starlet S. in addition to her third-placefinish in the inaugural Breeders= Cup Juvenile FilliesTurf. Young credits Summer Front=s sire for improvingan already-strong family. AThis was probably one of the best mares he=d beenbred to at that time, and if he can move something uplike Rose of Summer, then he must something reallyspecial.@

Consigned to the April sale by Niall Brennan, the

horse that would come to be known as Summer Front

    breezed a quarter-mile in a snappy :21 1/5 (video). That

he had to go so deep for the colt came as little surprise

    to Young.

AHe=s a horse that shipped into Keeneland with a

huge reputation,@ Young said yesterday by phone. AHe

trained well in Florida and then he went to Keeneland

and trained great over the Polytrack, We just thought

he was a graded-stake horse, and that=s what we

wanted. He was just a really athletic and well-balanced

horse that has tremendous mechanics and moves like a

    horse of quality.@

Young expected that Summer Front would deliver a

performance worthy of 2-1 favoritism at first asking.

AAnyone that=s ever been around the horse has

thought he was special, but it=s always nice to go out

there and prove it,@ Young said.

And, despite a debut at six furlongs on turf, the colt

could prove versatile, Young offered. In addition to his

under-tack work ahead of the sale at Keeneland,

Summer Front worked a half-mile from the gate in :48

4/5 over the Belmont training track in late August.

AI think he can run on anything,@ Young said. AI was

at Belmont when he was [training] at Saratoga and at

Saratoga when he was at Belmont, so this is the first

time I=ve seen him since the sale,@ Young stated.

AChristophe felt he wanted to start him off on the

grass, so that=s what was decided.@

And although Summer Frost showed he was equal to

the task in his debut, Young thinks that patience will

    rule the day.

AIt=s up to Mr. Moore and Christophe, but I don=t think

anyone is going to get in a hurry with him. He=s a really

    good horse.@ --AC
