Eleven students participated this year. Bill Hoyt, member of the Nebraska Public Power District Board of Directors, presented MPCC with a check for $16,650. NEBRASKA ALLOCATED $2.2 MILLION IN GRANTS U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Nebraska State Director Karl Elmshaeuser today announces that Nebraska has been allocated with nearly $2.2 million in grants available through the Community Facilities Program to help rural communities continue in their recovery from the devastating effects of FEMA declared dis- asters in Nebraska. Nebraska has been hit hard by the devastating weather, with 83 of our counties receiving Major Disaster Declara- tions, Elmshaeuser said. USDA works hard to help communities thrive and this funding supports in their long-term recovery. The $2.2 mil- lion is included in the Additional Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act that President Trump signed into law on June 6, 2019. More than 100 types of projects are eligible for Community Facilities funding. Eligible applicants include municipalities, public bodies, nonprofit organizations and federally recognized Native American tribes. Projects must be in eligible rural areas with a popu- lation of 20,000 or less. 2019 BURR OAK CANYON TREE SYMPOSIUM More than 100 scientists, foresters, arborists, nature lovers and tree advocates from numerous states were at McCook Community College Thursday and Friday as part of the 2019 Burr Oak Canyon Tree Symposium. Conference sessions included a variety of issues related to tree care as well as a BBQ and social tonight at Common Scents Nursery and highlighted by a tour Friday of the relict stand of trees in nearby Burr Oak Canyon. Some scientists believe this hidden pocket of some 800 bur oak trees survived the ice age and could have been established 9,000 years ago. One of the trees with a 22- inch trunk was determined to be 150 years old and some of the trees with 40-inch trunks could be as old as 200 years old. Part of Friday’s field trip included a study and observations of what could be a rare lone gambel oak tree. Thursday's schedule included a bur oak tree- planting ceremony in Kelley Park. SPORTS The Nebraska football team worked out in full pads for two

hours inside the Hawks Championship Center and outside on

the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields on Wednesday morn-

ing. Offensive Coordinator Troy Walters addressed the media

following practice about sophomore quarterback Adrian Mar-

tinez’s health after the bye week. “He looks pretty good out

there,” Walters said. “He has a brace [on and is] moving

around better than he was last week so we are hopeful. All

the quarterbacks are taking reps and we will kind of see on

game day who is ready to go but we have faith in whichever

quarterback is out there.” The Huskers will continue prepara-

tions for Indiana with practice on Thursday. Kickoff is set for

2:30 p.m. on Saturday with television coverage provided by

BTN.

Nebraska sophomore outside hitter Capri Davis will take an

indefinite medical leave of absence from the volleyball pro-

gram effective immediately, the Athletic Department an-

nounced on Wednesday. A native of Mansfield, Texas, Davis

had played in nine matches this season with 38 kills, 12

blocks and 11 digs. Davis had a season-high 10 kills in the

season-opening win against Creighton. But she had missed

six matches this season battling injury and illness, according

to a statement from the Athletic Department. Davis was at

practice on Wednesday but was not in drills, and then the

Huskers had a team meeting after practice.
