STATE OF THE PALISADES-NEW JERSEY SECTION: VENTURING INTO THE FUTURE

the “State of the Section” presentation by our President, S.t. Lee, will re-view what we have accomplished in the past year and our goals for thecoming year.

INNOVATION AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES IN POLYMERIC FOAMS

Polymeric foam itself was a great innovation 80 years ago when it first cameinto the market. Small cells distributed uniformed in the polymer matrix ba-sically generated new cellular properties for a variety of applications. nowa-days, polymeric foam has become so popular that its lifecycle raisesconcerns. along with energy conservation, lightweighting, and environmen-tal status, more innovations become necessary not only to survive, but toovercome the challenges to further benefit our life. this presentation willfocus on technical, social, and business aspects of innovation and ad-vanced technology in polymeric foams.

dr. S. t. Lee is the current president of the Palisades-new Jersey sectionof SPe (2014-15) and a Senior Fellow at Sealed air corp, having also beena development engineer and R&d director for Sealed air. S.t. has been anSPe fellow since 2000 and is a member of the Sealed air Patent Hall ofFame. He has over 100 publications in polymeric foams, including 30patents. He authored and edited five books on foam and serves as the prin-ciple editor for Foam update. He holds a bachelors degree in chemical en-gineering from tsinghua university and Masters and Ph.d. degrees inchemical engineering from Stevens institute of technology.

    FOAMS®2014 Conference Review

    3

"the future of foams is bright," said chul Park, professor at the university of toronto,

canada, in the opening address of the SPe FoaMS® 2014 conference held in September in new Jersey. "a per-

ception is that foams are for cost savings and are a 'cheap'material, but foams have many technical, functional applicationsand are also quite sustainable. they are not yet being used totheir fullest advantage," said Park. at the conference, dr. Parkwas awarded the thermoplastic Materials and Foams division's(tPM&F's) outstanding achievement award for his more thantwenty years of contributions to the foam industry. He hasnearly 800 publications in the field, including twenty patents, and has impacted the use of foams in a wide range of applica-tions, including wood-plastics composites and rotomolding. dr.Park presented some of his recent work using multiwalled car-bon nanotube composite foam for energy storage and electro-magnetic interference shielding devices. His was the first ofmany presentations at the conference that discussed researchin technologies in development, such as nanocellular foams, which are characterized by nano-sized voids in nano-sized dis-persed solids. While such nanocellular foams are likely decadesaway from commercialization, the researchers are dedicated tounderstanding the basic mechanisms in order to advance foamtechnology.

bio-based polymer foams, including PLa and blends containinglignin, were discussed in several presentations. a paper onhome-compostable, loose-fill foam, “biodegradable Paknat-ural® loose fill foam from non-food renewable materials,” pre-sented by n.S. Ramesh and John Wolf of Sealed aircorporation, was the winner of the tPM&F division’s bestPaper award. other topics included microcellular foam pro-cessing and expanded polymer foam (e.g., ePP). Still other pre-sentations described industrial applications and newdevelopments in automotive, rail, and aviation applications forseating and load floors; the office furniture market; and spaceexploration. in addition, a panel discussion by five experts onfoams technology brought a lively interplay between the pan-elists and the conference attendees on current challenges inthe art of foaming polymers.

SPe has a strong interest in supporting students in polymer-re-lated studies. the conference featured seven posters from stu-

SPe FoaMS® conFeRence PReSentS cutting-edge ReSeaRcH the 12th annual international conference featured research in topics such as nanocellular and bio-based foams.

dents at universities in north america, europe, and asia. First-and second-place poster award winners, belen notario andester Laguna-gutierrez, were both from the university of val-ladolid, Spain. notario was also the recipient of the annualtPM&F scholarship award, which is now given in honor ofMichael Reedy, founder of Reedy international.

the 2014 event was sponsored by SPe's tPM&F division, thePalisades-new Jersey Section, and industrial sponsors clari-ant, dMH Performance additives, imerys talc, Kenrich Petro-chemicals, Leistritz, Polyfil additives technology,Quantachrome instruments, Reedy international, and Rowa.over 100 people attended the conference, and 25 attendedthe 2-day pre-conference tutorial. in 2015, the 13th annualinternational FoaMS® conference will be held in Kyoto, Japanfrom September 8-11. the conference will be co-sponsored bythe tPM&F division, the Japan Section of SPe, and the JapanSociety of Polymer Processing. abstracts for the upcomingconference are due in april, 2015.

    Councilor’s Report

i attended committee and councilmeetings on September 13-14,2014 at the canal Street Marriott innew orleans, La. the usual pri-mary objective of our fall meeting isto elect new officers for the comingyear. However, since this fall meet-ing was held so early and antec®

is so early next year, the ec decided to move elections to the21-22 March 2015 annual meeting, which will be held in or-lando just prior to antec® and the nPe. this ec decision gen-erated controversy, because many councilors were unaware ofthe change until they arrived.

though elections were not held, the divisions committee, tasked this year with proposing candidates for office, nomi-nated Joe golba (Extrusion Division), barry Morris (ExtrusionDivision) and Harrison yu (Virginia Section) for the office of vicePresident.

during our spring council Meeting, it was agreed to try an ex-periment of combining the Sections & divisions meeting andreduce the total time allotment allowing more time for open dis-cussions during the council committee of the Whole (ccoW)meeting. during this combined meeting, the following wereproposed and subsequently approved by the council.

the Rochester Section was placed on provisional status.the provisional status decision on the toledo section wastabled until our next meeting. a beijing university of chemical technology studentchapter was formed. the Rheology Sig was changed to a division-in-Forma-tion status. a new Reaction injection Molding technology Sig waspetitioned.

the combined Sections/divisions Meeting was immediately fol-lowed by an expanded ccoW that covered numerous topics.in general, most participants were pleased with this new formatthat allows more open discussion in the ccoW before the for-mal council Meetings.

a lengthy discussion centered on what some feel is a lack ofactivity/action by councilors representing some of the smallersections/divisions and a push to minimize meeting time spenton governance and maximize time spent on strategy to improveSustainability of the Society with emphasis on the expandeduse of technology, expanding the SPe brand, building partner-

ships, bridging the generation gap and increasing the partici-pation/involvement of young professionals. the ccoW con-cluded with a presentation/discussion of “brainstorming ideas”submitted by several members, details of which will be postedon the SPe website.

the council Meetings began in the afternoon and continuedthrough the following day. though most of the proceedings willbe posted on the website, i will highlight a few key points.

alpha and beta testing of “the chain” (SPE’s virtual communityweb based networking platform by Higher Logic) is now under-way and should be completed by year end.

council was also advised of personnel changes being made atthe new headquarters facility in bethel, ct. With the retirementof gail bristol in august, a search began for someone to replaceher. With a preference to find someone with a strong back-ground in the plastics industry and after considering seven can-didates, it was announced that Past President Russell broomehas accepted the position of Managing director of SPe and willbegin in october. other changes include the announcementby tom conklin that he will be retiring next year and that SarahSullinger is returning to SPe as a part-time employee.

What is becoming the most active and encouraging aspect ofour Society is the next generation advisory board (ngab) andboth Sections and divisions are taking every opportunity topartner with the ngab activities planned for antec®2015 inorlando. as always Student activities at antec® will includea Student Luncheon, Student Posters, Speed interviews, Mis-sion Possible 3.0 and Panel discussions. Funding is beingsought to support all of these events. also, the ngab will againsponsor a Plastics Race, but this year it will be indoors and con-ducted throughout exhibit halls. therefore, the ngab is seekingsponsors among the exhibitors to participate in the event.

Finally we conducted small group discussions to provide inputto the ec regarding membership pricing, the value of member-ship and the governance of SPe. these discussions proved tobe quite heated at times, especially as related to possiblechanges in governance. input from all participants will be re-viewed and presented back to council at our next meeting forfurther consideration.

    best Regards,tom MartinPalisades-new Jersey councilor
