THURSDAY NIGHT SPECIAL =============================================================
THE BS FACTOR IN YOUR
APPLICATION “The best advice that I can give your applicants is to stay within 5 miles of their neighborhood (85008) in central the Phoenix/airport area….as this is your search golden local zone…I love to here that an applicant lives right down the street…my ears perk up…”
Talked to a retail manager of a big
box store today and she educated me
on the interview process. She told me
that the FATAL “You shot yourself in
the foot” mistake(s) that an applicant
makes are…
FACTOR ONE:
The BS Factor comes from applying
for stores that are a long way from
your home location. The BS is that the
employer knows that it is BS that you
will or that you can travel to their
location on a daily basis without
missing days or running late
(especially if you are on a bus).
Within 5 miles, the bus is reliable
transportation after that it is an
excuse to being late or being absent.
This manager tells me that this is so
common with all of her stores; “your
application is not reviewed unless they
are totally desperate. “
Her suggestion is that if you keep in
the 5-10 mile range.
The Manager told me, that she really
likes to hear that “I just live down the
street” as this tells her that you are
more likely to be on time and that you
will have the flexibility to stay late or
come in on your day with short notice.
She said that might not be fair but,
that is the reality of the retail
market. FACTOR TWO:
(I never thought about this but, now
it makes sense) the second biggest
reason that she does not call people is
because they applied for multiple
openings at her store.
According to her (and echoed by
other managers) this is a real negative
and usually means that she will not
waste time with you.
The impression that the applicant
makes is that they are willing to do
anything usually means that they are
desperate for employment and that
they are just applying for things
whether or not they really qualifies
for them.
She says that this wastes her time
trying to figure out what you want to
do when you grow up and as she is
busy running the store to take that
much time on any one candidate. Most
importantly, she says that it shows
her that you really do not have a
specific interest or worse yet (if the
applicant is a mess – incomplete,
rushed, and hard-to-read and/or lacks
details or doesn’t relate to the skills
that she is looking for) you don’t care.
To her the application represents you
at your best and she judges it as such.
Her suggestion is to read the job
descriptions and determine which job
is a perfect fit for your skills (you
need to do this as she doesn’t have
the time or interest to do) and, then,
apply for that job.
She said that you must complete the
application with an emphasis on the
skills, abilities or experience that is
requested in the ad. She said that
this should be your base to build a
case that she needs to call you in for
an interview. The application must be
neat and easy for her to read (sloppy
applications are tossed as they take
too much time to figure out).
Remember, to her, this is your very
best and sloppiness is a sign that you
really didn’t want this job.
She told me that it is critical that you
show her that you have the skills that
she needs and that you need to show
how your experience (outside of the
specific job you applied for) related
to the specific job you applied for.
She said you need to show the
connection. She said that is your job
not her’s as she has a job and she
ended the thought by saying that she
isn’t Colombo!
Put this all together and you have an
application that will impress her
enough to call you. If not, try again in
six months – as that is how long they
keep them on file.
She also warned about putting in
multiple applications with slightly
different names as her company’s
computer will catch and flag them as
bogus. If you application is flagged,
then the system will delete it any
further applications from you – which
means you wasted your time.
On a final note, she told me that
applications that look like the
applicant took the time, made the
effort to do correctly and that are to
the point are the ones that she sits
aside and takes a second, longer look
at before she calls.
Better have a good number where she
can reach you at. She told me that
this is her biggest complaint about
applicants because a bad number or
your failure to promptly return her
call will cost you a job.
Further to this point, she said that
she assumes you really wanted the job
or you wouldn’t have applied and she
cannot understand people whose voice
mail is full or not turned on.
She told us to warn you that you have
an hour of opportunity to call her back
before she calls the next good
applicant on her list.
She says that she cannot more
strongly remind applicants that all of
these things are their duty and part
of the process of getting the job.
She finished by saying that if an
applicant needs to be serious about
the process and if they are not, then,
they need to stop applying and stay
home!
{From the manager’s own mouth…I
would read it through several times to
make sure that I get it…this is the
process…your future is in your own
hands and how hard you are willing to
work to help yourself!

“I HAVE A PAST.. BUT I DON’T LIVE THERE ANYMORE” ARE WE GEETING ALL MUSHY ON YOU? Not really, that isn’t our style to get all gooey on you
with some worn out slogans and Hallmark Cards. But,
here we are with just that!
SO WHAT GIVES? We did a special cover today because there was so
much truth in what the young lady was saying. She said
that she has a past “But I don’t live there anymore.”
That blew us away! That says everything that needs to
be said. We all have a past. Some past experiences
were good, others bad. Hopefully, they were all part of
the process that brought us together at
this point in time.
The moral of the cover is that the past is
gone, it’s all dust and ash - no matter how
much we try to cover ourselves with these
ashes of regrets, and we cannot change
what was.
No matter how long we stand still, no
matter how bury ourselves in the ruins of
our past mistakes, no matter how much we
feel the need to extend the pain and
suffering that we taste, we cannot change
a thing.
The secret is to stop and realize that we are the master of our present and the
director/the producer of our own futures. It is upon each of us to rise to the
challenge to accept that life is unfair and people are cruel. It is upon each of us to
break the cycle of failure by accepting that the power to change our present is
totally upon us and thus, our future is in each of our own hands.
What does all this mean?
It means that we need to stop pouting about how mean and cruel the world is, we
need to remove that redwood-sized chip on our shoulder about people
disrespecting us by doubling or tripling down on our efforts to get a job. Reality is
that no one needs to do anything for us and it is on ourselves to create
opportunities through hard work, learning the new skills of navigating this changed
labor market. We must demand a higher standard of our own efforts and
commitment.
I won’t go on because we are burning daylight and yet another
change to get out there knocking on doors, shaking hands and
impressing yet another employer as to how job ready we are
and how well we match the skills that they need…Another
chance to take this to the next level!

ais-former-chef-open-urban-vine-central-phoenix/6966071/
On May 1, he will launch Urban Vine in the
central Phoenix spot of soon-to-close Coronado Cafe, 2201 N. Seventh
St. He's partnering with John Rothstein, a former manager and
sommelier at Kai who most recently was general manager at St. Francis
in Phoenix. O'Dowd has been itchy to get back into the kitchen ever
since his first post-Kai venture, Renegade by MOD in Scottsdale, folded
in late December after seven months.
"I've been looking for the right space, the right opportunity and the
right price," he said, calling Coronado Cafe's 1920s structure a
"character building" and a "little gem." O'Dowd plans to "tap into local
hipsters" with an affordable and casually stylish all-day menu
supplemented with nightly entree specials. Beer and wine will also be a
priority. "I like the atmosphere of the local community," O'Dowd said.
"I'm going to bring it and have fun." O'Dowd also is in negotiations to
open a larger restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale. He'll be meeting with
investors over the next few weeks, and hopes to make an announcement
in late April.

USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…TARGET… Sales Floor Team Leader Interview - I applied online and the
process took 1 week
Interview Details –
1st: apply online
2nd: they'll call if you meet qualifications
3rd: 1 st interview is with the Team Leader over the phone (Target just
started doing this about two years ago, I think it was a horrible idea,
it's very informal and not personal at all!)
4th: If team leader likes the phone conversation, they'll call you in for
a second interview (in person) with their Executive Team Leader.
5th: If the ETL likes you, HR clerical will come out and give you a job
offer (at this time you are offered pay rate)
6th: required drug test within 24hours (if not taken within the time
frame, you will be disqualified from the position)
7th: once drug test passes, than you are called in for orientation. (about
an 8 hours day/paid with the last 2-3 hours of shadow cashier training)
Interview Question – Their interview questions are all
"Tell me about a time" They want to know specifics: what was the
Situation, What you did about it, and what was the outcome (Bonus:
tell them what you learned from this situation) is how most target
employers like you to answer their questions.
Most Difficult Question for a entry level candidate:
Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a peer and what
did you do to solve that disagreement (not an exact question, can't
really remember any but questions are something similar).
Another question that candidates seem to find difficult (which is
actually simple)
What are your good qualities and what do you need to improve on?
(do not say you do not have anything to improcve; everyone does!)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sale Floor Team Member Interview -I applied in-person and the
process took 5 days
Interview Details – Typically starts off with an initial phone interview.
Questions include: Tell me about a time you had a lot to do in a short
period of time, how did you manage that situation?
Tell me about a time you had to work in a group to accomplish a goal.
And tell me about a time you exceeded someones expectations.
After you pass the first interview you move on to a face to face.
Sometimes they will both be face to face. It just depends.
Interview Question – They are not very difficult questions, but they
can tell if you have prepared or not --------------------------------------------------------
Sales Floor Team Member Interview - I applied online and the
process took 6 days
Interview Details – Interview call came about 3 days after application.
The experience was wonderful. I was interviewed by 3 separate ETLs
(executive team lead) and they were all very pleasant.
The questions seemed very easy, though this may be because I excel at
interviews. One of the ETLs was very charming and easy to talk to--I
almost forgot that I was in an interview.
Very great process overall.
Offer came at the end of the interview and I quickly accepted.
Interview Question –
Name a time that you had an idea that helped the company through
a difficult time. ----------------------------------------------------------
Sales Floor Team Member Interview - I applied online and the
process took a day
Interview Details – I was hired by first going to Target.com/careers
and submitting an online application. Less than 5 hours later I got a call
to schedule an interview a few days from then.
I had the interview at the Target store that I had applied to at 9 am. I
wore interview attire which I sure helped me get the position.
I was instructed to go to the back room where all the offices and break
room was located. I waited there for 5 mins then my first interviewer
came and took me to a room.
I was asked very easy-going and basic interview questions that I'm sure
most average people can answer. Things such as my first job
experiences, a time when I handled a difficult situation, why did I pick
Target, experiences I had when working in a team setting, etc. He then
told me that I fit what Target was looking for and that he would
recommend me for a second interview (I had no idea there would be a
second interview, especially right after my first one).
He sent me back to the break room and then a lady approached me and
handed me a questionnaire. It was about 20 multiple-choice questions
giving a scenario.
I had to pick the BEST possible option for the scenario and then I had
to pick the WORST possible option for the same scenario on the
following question. It was pretty straight forward and simple.
I then went on to complete the questionnaire and handed it back to the
lady.
I then had to go back to the break room and wait a short while. Then
my second interviewer came and got me. She took me to another room
and mostly asked me the same questions as the first interviewer.
At the end she said that I did good and sent me back to the break
room.
This time someone from Human Resources came and took me to her
office and said that I would be hired if I accepted, which of course I
did. She quickly explained my job, what I would do, what to expect, my
pay rate and that I would have to do a urinalysis off-site, paid for by
Target, and an orientation.
I signed the contract, left to take the urinalysis that same day and
went to the orientation 3 days later. Overall the process was what I
expected from a large retail company - fairly easy interview, low
chances of being turned down, and nice experience. Also the entire
process was no longer than an hour and a half or so.
Interview Question – Most difficult question -
"What is your greatest weakness, or what can you improve on?" It
wasn't so much an unexpected question or a difficult one, I'll admit
I was just too lazy to practice for possible questions so I wasn't
fully able to answer it.

SPRING HIRING NOW HAPPENING! =================================================================
HERE IS SIMILAR ADVICE FROM YET ANOTHER MAJOR EMPLOYER! STEP ONE: APPLY ONLINE… http://www.careersatsafeway.com/
DID YOU KNOW? 80% of all applications get thrown away because you
NEVER showed the employer that you had the skills that THEY were
looking for. You got too caught up with explaining what you did instead
of showing how that related to what this employer wanted.
HINT: If I was an auto mechanic applying for a courtesy clerk position
at Food City…the last thing I would talk about would be repairing a
car…I would talk about dealing with my customers, resolving their
problems…MAKE SENSE?
TRY IT! IT DOES WORK MIRACLES! YOU MUST HAVE OPEN AVAILABLE TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR PT WORK.
STEP TWO: GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF…If you really want the job,
demonstrate that by going over to the store and introducing
yourself…If you can’t or won’t…this tells the employer everything they
need to know about how seriously you REALLY want their job…NOT!
Most importantly, this says that you do not care enough…that you might
do this job…OR NOT? NO ONE wants to hire the person who
demonstrates that they would take this job as a last resort…everyone
wants to hire the person who is excited…who likes/love the work and
who appreciates the opportunity to get THIS job.
STEP THREE: Explain that you understand… that you are being offered
an opportunity and that you appreciate it…because the employer
believes that they are offering you an opportunity and most applicants
(mostly those not hired) never demonstrate that they get it…little-a-
lone that they appreciate it. At the end of the interview, tell the
employer that you still want the job…these things make a big difference
and many times…means the difference between getting hired or not.
===============================================================
MENO TO: ALL FUTURE APPLICANTS FROM: FOX RESTURANTS MANAGEMENT STAFF & HR RE: 10 things not to do at our interview(s)… It’s a potential life-changing event—yet so many people get it wrong. I’m
talking about going for an interview for a position you really want; one
that could have a dramatic impact on the rest of your life.
So, why is it that so many prospective employees don’t seem to grasp
the essentials of getting the interviewer to fall in love with them and
make a commitment to hire them?
While building three successful businesses I’ve had the opportunity to
conduct over a thousand interviews. Let me share with you 10 common
faults I’ve identified from that experience. Avoid them if you really
want to get the exciting job of your dreams.
1. Don’t Be Unprepared
First of all…don’t make the mistake of going into an interview without
researching the industry, the company, the boss, and as much as you can
about the specific position. If someone tells me they’re at the interview
to learn about my company, that’s a total turn-off.
The interviewee should have gone out of his way to become
knowledgeable and find out in advance everything he could about the
enterprise he wants to work for. There are so many online resources
today; it’s not something that’s hard to do. It shows that the candidate
is serious about wanting the position. Part of being prepared is also
making sure you don’t arrive late for the interview. That’s inexcusable.
Shoot to get to the appointment way ahead of time just in case there
are unexpected delays.
2. Don’t Go Casual
You must create a good first impression. And that starts with the first
moment your interviewer sets eyes on you. We’re not exactly a suit and
tie company, but it’s disrespectful for a potential employee to stroll in
wearing a torn T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. It’s better to be
overdressed than underdressed. You’re attending a job interview—not a
ball game. (SAMPLE: KHAKIS & POLO SHIRT)
3. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions
I like inquisitive people. I like people who want to learn. And I actually
like people who challenge me. So don’t forget that an interview is a two-
way street. I’m trying to find out if you’ll fit in with the rest of my rock
stars and what kind of dynamite contribution you can make to our
success; hopefully, you’re curious about the people with whom you’ll be
working, the Company’s culture, exactly what is going to be demanded of
you—and the potential for growth within the company.
I’m going to be investing in you—so I want someone who’s going to make
a commitment and be with us long-term. Please don’t forget that.
4. Don’t Use Clichés
I’ve heard them all. “I’m a problem-solver.”
“I’m a real team player.” “I’m a
perfectionist.” I don’t need to hear
general descriptions of how great you are
(especially those clichés). I do want to
hear specific examples of your successes
and who the inner you is? What character
in any relationship do you value the most?
What was the highest moment in your life and the most struggling? How
did you react and prosper?
5. Don’t Trash Your Current Employer
You may well be unhappy at your current company. I don’t need to hear
it. If you speak ill of your current employer what’s to say you won’t
speak ill of me? Don’t bring any trash talk from your job into the
interview. Saying you didn’t always see eye to eye is one thing; it may
well show that you can think for yourself, especially if you can quote a
positive element. One way or another it was a learning experience! But
don’t harp on petty disputes or air any dirty laundry. Don’t trash talk
anyone. You don’t want to gain a reputation for negativity.
6. Don’t Be Fake
There’s always the temptation to “play to the gallery” when you’re being
interviewed. You’re inclined to tell the interviewer exactly what you
think he wants to hear rather than exactly how you feel. OK. So it’s
stressful and you want the job real bad. And maybe you even
exaggerate your experience a little bit. My advice is to be real.
Presenting a “fake you” and hyped credentials is not going to serve you
in the long haul. Truth has a way of finding its way out.
7. Don’t Chit Chat
Never forget that this is an interview for a job. Be professional. Be
business-like. This is not the forum to share intimate details of your
personal life, the ups and downs of your marriage, or your recent break-
up. It is the forum to discuss why you want the job and will be an asset
to the company.
8. Don’t Be Evasive
A good interviewer will ask plenty of direct questions. Be ready to
provide direct answers. Honesty is the best policy. A good interviewer
will watch your body language and inflection of voice for any telltale
evasions.
9. Don’t Talk Money
There’s a time and a place to discuss salary, bonuses, and perks of the
job. And it’s not at the initial interview unless it’s something the
interviewer raises. Your compensation package is obviously a matter for
major discussion—when you know you’re going to get offered something.
Then you can always negotiate from a position of strength.
10. Don’t Just Walk Away
At the end of the interview don’t simply say “thanks for your
consideration” and depart—and that’s the end of it. If you want the
position make it clear that you’re interested before you leave and try to
find out the company’s level of interest in you. Say something like, “This
sounds like an ideal position for me. Is there a fit here?” and “What’s
our next step?”
Your next step, regardless, is to follow up. The same day.
A brief, polite email thanking the interviewer for his consideration and
reiterating your desire for the job is not only proper etiquette but also
shows that you really want it.
I’m always surprised when someone doesn’t follow up. But it happens.
Going for an interview is one of the most important (and challenging)
events in anyone’s life. Don’t treat it casually if are serious about being
part of a winning team.
It’s your first chance to shine. Don’t make it your last chance.
Most of all, especially if you’re young, take risks and interview for the
places that you can call a career – not a job.
Life’s too short to be aiming for a 9 to 5.

“MAKING DO WITH THE WORLD AS IT IS AND ADAPT YOURSELF TO GET TO WORK”
– From Getta A. Long PhD.
Let’s face the truth. The world is what it is and all of the could of, should of and might of will not change it nor help your current needs. In fact, it is up to you to go
the extra mile, make the extra effort and to then work harder than the person who doesn’t have barriers. That’s the reality of your situation and the sooner you accept your mission, the sooner you will achieve employment. It is very easy to give up, to blame society and use the difficulty of the situation as your excuse for doing nothing…”No one will hire me!” “No one will hire me!” is a very easy way to shut down any conversation with case managers, friends or family because they will be hard pressed to call you on this. It becomes a very seductive way to avoid painful conversations that focus on what you believe is your failure(s). It becomes so seductive that you start to believe it too.
The problem is that once you start to buy in on the concept, it becomes truth but, is it reality? The answer is to you, for friends, family and support team it becomes a false reality. The question to ask is complicated because you must be truthful with yourself about how much of this is true and how much of this was your fabrication to protect your feeling and/or to get people off your back.
The real answer is that it is not. The real answer lies in the fact that you let your past experience(s) or one or two recent experience(s) prevent you from moving on with your job search and thus your life.
THEN WHAT IS WRONG? The truth is that you are unprepared to re-enter the work world, you have not been given the knowledge, the actual tools or guidance that you need to succeed. Yes, society…the system has failed you. That true. But, what is also true is the fact that it is your life and thus, your duty to seek this out, obtain and utilize this to help yourself. The key factor is that you must help yourself. This is critical because it is your life and if you do not care enough about yourself to do these little things; how can you depend upon yourself to achieve the major things? You can’t is the correct answer and in this way, the system wins by an easy default because you gave up or even didn’t try. Make sense? The lack of knowledge about job seeking mixed with your willingness to live in a world where your presence is road blocked by your past experiences and if you are dead in the water with your present, how can you have a future?
THE SOLUTIONS ARE EASY BUT REQUIRE WORK! The answer starts with the concept of throwing to the curb your mindset of “Been there…Done that!” Let this go and accept every new challenge on its own merits and accept that this is a time to take risks. Do not reject a new opportunity based upon what has happened before. Without taking chances or by accepting the risk that you might get turned down, how can you ever win? You can’t! It doesn’t work that way because you are not so highly skilled or experience that employers are lined up to hire you because there are only a couple of people (in America) that can do what you do. If you are that skilled, you don’t need our help. Is it hard? Yes, it is! Will the path be hard? Yes it will! Will you succeed? That depends TOTALLY on YOU! The question I ask is: “Why not take the chance…roll them dice and play the hand that has been dealt to you without folding…JUST MAYBE…MAYBE…the dealer will draw twenty-three instead of twenty-one. If you don’t play…like the lottery guys say: “If you don’t play (try) then you can’t win!” Start to see the picture?
ACCEPTING THE NEED TO HELP MYSELF…
There is an ancient Chinese Proverb
that “If I (firstly) ask who will help
me, then, no one will help me because
if I am not worthy of my own help
…AND, if I unwilling to help myself,
why should others waste their
efforts?”
See the difference between the picture of your granddaddy and this
guy?
Take a long look because there is a critical difference between the two
pictures. Your granddaddy didn’t ask “who is gonna help me?”
They took their own action, made their own case and created their own
opportunities that put them to back to work.
This second guy may not be asking for charity but, isn’t he depending on
it? The second guy starts with the concept that I am not going to help
myself…so who else will?
Who would you rather help?
Betcha you said “my granddaddy.” Why?
Not because he was your granddaddy but, rather because he started by
helping himself instead of depending upon the kindness of random
strangers.
