WORLD'S RICHEST RACE COMES TO GULFSTREAMBy Eric MitchellEditor's Note: An original version of this story did not have the correct timeframe for races that can be renamed and still retain their graded status. The correct timeframe is below.

The Stronach Group announced May 11 the inau-

gural running of the $12 million Pegasus World

Cup will be held Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.

With a purse that would make it the world's rich-

est Thoroughbred race, the Pegasus World Cup will

be contested at 1 1/8 miles on dirt.

Besides finding middle ground between the

Breeders' Cup and the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) for

his world-class race, Frank Stronach targeted Janu-

ary at Gulfstream Park in order to poach the grade I

status from the Donn Handicap.

The American Graded Stakes Committee allows

graded status to be transfered as long as the new

at the same racetrack, and is run inside a 60-day win-

dow of the already recognized grade I stakes. This

year's Donn was Feb. 6.

A similar shift occurred at Belmont Park in 2014

when the New York Racing Association created the

$1 million Belmont Oaks Invitational (gr. IT), formerly

the Garden City, and the $1.25 million Belmont Der-

by Invitational (gr. IT), formerly the Jamaica. Because

these races were moved from fall to spring, the AGSC

made an exception to the 60-day rule.

Jack Wolf, who was retained as the CEO of the

Pegasus World Cup to assist with race marketing and

coordination, said owners and trainers might still

have questions regarding the timing of the race but

thinks that will work itself out.

"This may be a game-changer for older horses

to keep racing instead of retiring to the breeding

shed," said Wolf, who is also co-managing partner

of Starlight Racing.

The Pegasus World Cup will be restricted to 12

horses whose connections will be required to pay $1

million each to buy a spot in the starting gate.

The entrant's owner can then race, lease, con-

tract, share a starter, or sell its place in the starting

gate, The Stronach Group said in its May 11 release.

Original entrants will also have the first option to

participate in future Pegasus World Cup races.

Not only will all entrants be competing for the

world's largest purse but they will also share equally

in 100% of the net income from handle, media rights,

and sponsorships from the event, according to Wolf.

All starters in the Pegasus World Cup will get a

share of the purse. The payouts will be as follows:

$7 million to the winner; $1.75 million for second; $1

million for third; and $250,000 paid to fourth through

12th-place finishers. The owners of each of the

starters will then receive 1/12 of the net income from

handle, media rights, and sponsorships.

"This revenue model could also be a game-chang-

er," Wolf said. "It will be positive for owners to get

access to revenue streams they haven't been privy to

in the past. Owners and racetracks working together

will only help the industry." BH

‘NYQUIST EFFECT' ON UNCLE MO 2YO DEMAND?By Ron Mitchell

The correlation between racetrack success and sale

ring results couldn’t be any more timely for con-

signors with Uncle Mo 2-year-olds in the upcoming

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale May 23-24.

The May 7 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) victory by

Nyquist, from Uncle Mo’s first crop, pushed the

Ashford Stud stallion to the top of the North Ameri-

can earnings sire list, further enhancing the stallion’s

early success.

He is also favored for the Preakness Stakes (gr. I),

run two days before the Fasig-Tipton sale in Timoni-

um, Md., not far from Pimlico Race Course.

During his 2013 season at Ashford,

when the current crop of 2-year-olds was

conceived, Uncle Mo stood for $35,000.

With Nyquist among Uncle Mo’s early

juvenile successes last year, the stallion’s

yearling prices soared, 64 grossing more

than $7.39 million, a $115,613 average.

Uncle Mo stands in 2016 for $75,000.

There has been robust demand for

Uncle Mo 2-year-olds offered earlier this

year, with 23 selling for an average of

$288,043 on a gross of $6.62 million.

While Derby success can’t hurt, con-

signors say Uncle Mo’s career was al-

ready off to a good start. Any financial

bump would benefit marginal horses

more than the top stock.

“I think obviously there will be a little

bit of Derby hype on the Uncle Mos (at

Midlantic), but I think that only helps the

lesser-to-average horses,” said Ciaran

Dunne, whose Wavertree consigns an

Uncle Mo colt from the family of recent

Ashland (gr. I) winner Weep No More.

“The better horses have already estab-

lished their own value without any help.

You may find that if an Uncle Mo is not

quite up to muster, it will still get sold

because of the hype around the Derby

and Preakness.”

Matt Lyons of Woodford Thorough-

breds said a filly in his consignment, out

of a stakes-winning and stakes-producing

mare, had already shown her potential value before

Nyquist’s Derby win.

“Nyquist obviously doesn’t hurt things, and if he

wins the Preakness around the sale it would be nice

timing, but I think, no matter what, this filly was going

to do well," Lyons said. "(Uncle Mo) has shown he’s a

very special sire with what he’s done so far, and we’re

pleased to have a nice one by him going into a sale."

Lyons added Nyquist’s success would also have no

effect on Woodford’s reserve.

“We know what we paid for them, what we have in

them (production costs), and set reasonable reserves

and let the market care of it,” Lyons said. “It wouldn’t

be any different in this case. We don’t get too caught

up in it.” BHAN

BODE'S DREAM IS SIRE'S FIRST WINNERBy Eric Mitchell

The first winner for WinStar Farm's stallion Bode-

meister, Bode's Dream won a 4 1/2-furlong maid-

en special weight at Gulfstream Park.

Starting at odds of 1-5, Bode's Dream was a frac-

tion slow out of the gate. But Edgard Zayas had the

filly in front by the half-mile pole and she was never

in danger from there, winning comfortably by 3 3/4

lengths in front of Faith 'n Works (Hear No Evil).

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Bode's Dream is owned

by Vince and Teresa Viola's St. Elias Stable. SF Blood-

stock bred the filly in Kentucky.

Out of Frolic's Dream (Smoke Glacken), Bode's

Dream was sold for $135,000 to Walter Bloodstock

at the 2014 Keeneland November sale as a weanling.

Jim Crupi's New Castle Farm bought her for $300,000

from Paramount Sales' consignment to the 2015

Keeneland September yearling sale.

Crupi put her in the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s

March sale, where she was a $340,000 RNA.

WRIGHT AND TOM OCHILTREE IN HALL OF FAMEBy Blood-Horse Staff

Tom Ochiltree, who won the Preakness Stakes in

his second lifetime start, and top jockey Wayne

D. Wright are this year’s historical inductees into the

National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Tom Ochiltree, foaled in 1872 at Kentucky’s Wood-

burn Stud, was by its famous stallion Lexington, who

led the general sires list 16 times. The famed farm

bred 18 classic winners.

Owned by George Lorillard and prepared by fu-

ture Hall of Fame trainer R.W. Walden, Tom Ochiltree

wasted no time adding to the farm’s tally of classic

winners, winning the 1875 Preakness only two days

after his career debut.

He came back stronger as a 4-year-old in 1876,

winning eight of 10 starts and finishing second and

third in the other two, becoming arguably the best

Thoroughbred in the East. His victories included the

Jockey Club Handicap,

Centennial Cup, and

Saratoga Cup. In the

latter he conceded

21 pounds to run-

ner-up Parole.

Future Hall of

Fame runner Parole

became a familiar

rival, whom Tom

Ochiltree met six

times and won four,

carrying higher

weights each time.

Tom Ochiltree

won nine of 14 starts

in 1877 and was nev-

er out of the mon-

ey. He concluded

his racing career in

October with a third-

place finish behind

Parole and Ten Bro-

eck in a sweepstakes

at Pimlico, finishing

with 21 wins from 33

starts.

Wright also rose to prominence early in his career. In

his first year as a jockey, 1932, he ranked sixth by num-

ber of wins, and he followed up the next year with 228

wins, which placed him second to Hall of Fame jockey

Jack Westrope.

As a 17-year-old, Wright won his first Triple Crown

race when he and Peace Chance captured the Bel-

mont Stakes. He took his first Kentucky Derby in 1942

with Shut Out, and added to his classic successes

with a Preakness victory aboard Polynesian.

He also rode Triple Crown winners War Admiral

and Omaha to multiple stakes victories, including the

Whitney Handicap, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, and the

Dwyer.

Wright concluded his career in 1950 with 1,492

wins from 9,764 starts, a 15.3% percentage.

He and Tom Ochiltree will be honored during the

induction ceremony Aug. 12 at 10:30 a.m. in Sara-

toga’s Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion alongside contem-

porary inductees Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Steve

Asmussen, and Ramon Dominguez. BH

KAIGUN LIKELY FAVORITE FOR MAN O'WARBy Mary Reeder

A fairly evenly matched field will contest the May 14

Man o' War (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, with Kaigun

most likely the favorite.

Kaigun (Northern Afleet), an Ontario-bred 6-year-

old gelding, placed second behind Da Big Hoss last

time out in the Dixiana Elkhorn (gr. IIT) and has fin-

ished second in five of his last six races, going back to

Nov. 14, the exception being his victory in the April 2

Pan American (gr. IIT).

Returning from that race is the German-bred

Wake Forest, beaten a head in the Pan American.

This will be the third U.S. start for Chad

Brown-trainee Wake Forest, who primarily raced in

Germany prior to his U.S. debut in the Aug. 15 Arling-

ton Million (gr. IT), where he placed sixth behind The

Pizza Man and Big Blue Kitten. Up With Birds, who is

entered Saturday, ran fourth in that race.

Another to watch out for is the Florida-bred Go

Around, trained by Bill Mott. The 4-year-old Medaglia

d'Oro colt won his last two starts, including a listed

Tampa Bay stakes, and posted a bullet work at Bel-

mont May 9. BH

DOTTED LINE IN THE FIRST MAN O' WARBy Tom Hall

In 1933 George Widener installed the earliest mod-

ern-era turf course in the U.S. at Hialeah. The South

Florida track, which later became the winter play-

ground for the rich and famous and the stabling

grounds for the mighty stables of the East Coast, ran

its first turf stakes in 1939.

Although acceptance of turf racing in the U.S. was

slow—by the early 1940s only three tracks had turf

courses—throughout the decades turf racing became

more prevalent as racecourses around the country

installed turf tracks alongside the main dirt tracks.

By 1964, among the 20 tracks that distributed

a daily average of $35,000 or more in purses, only

Bowie, Churchill Downs, Garden State Park, Holly-

wood Park, and Keeneland did not have turf courses.

In 1941 two stakes were run over turf; in 1964 there

were 62, including 12 at 1 1/2 miles.

May 14 marks the 58th running of the Man o' War

Stakes (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, which gave its first

fling at turf racing in the

spring of 1954, using a

converted section of the

infield used for hurdle

races.

Run at 1 1/2 miles, the

first edition of the New

York Racing Association's

new $100,000 Man o'

War (then a handicap) in

1959 attracted 23 entries,

including a large group

of foreign-bred horses.

So enthusiastic was the

support that NYRA ran

two divisions, at $100,000

each.

The first division was

stronger. It featured such

stars Mrs. Tilyou Chris-

topher's Amerigo, the

proficient dirt performer

who won the New York

Handicap on turf 17 days

earlier; the excellent dirt star from Cain Hoy Stable,

Bald Eagle, who spent his juvenile years on English

turf and who would later capture one of the premier

U.S. turf stakes, the Washington, D.C., International

(beating Tudor Era, winner of the second division of

the Man o' War); and King Ranch's perennially good

race mare, the 6-year-old Dotted Line.

On Oct. 24, over a rain-softened track, the girl

outran the boys, defeating Amerigo by 1 1/4 lengths

to take her first stakes of the year. Bald Eagle finished

fourth, a neck behind Prince Willy.

By Princequillo out of the Brazado mare Inscribe,

Dotted Line was a force to be reckoned with among

her peers for three years. At 3 she won the Delaware

Oaks and was runner-up in the Alabama Stakes and

Ladies Handicap. At 4 she took the Beverly and Vine-

land handicaps before returning the following year

to win the Miss America Turf Handicap and finish

second in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Following her retirement from racing, where

she won or placed in 25 of 67 starts and earned

$324,159, she produced a pair of stakes winners for

King Ranch, both by Gallant Man: Draft Card and

Gentleman's Word. BH

GREAT RESULTS AT INGLIS SALEBy Tara Madgwick

Last week's Inglis Australian broodmare and wean-

ling sale produced outstanding results, as the

buoyant trade experienced at yearling sales earlier

this year flowed through to the first of the season's

major breeding stock sales.

Four days of trade resulted in Aus$34.5 million

($26,287,924) in turnover, with an overall clearance

of 87%, the best result in six years.

Topping the sale at Aus$780,000 ($583,752) was

royally bred Comaneci (High Chaparral), offered in

foal to champion sire Fastnet Rock in her first year as

a broodmare.

Australian vendors are now looking forward to the

Magic Millions national weanling and broodmare sale

(May 29-June 5), with over 1,200 lots catalogued for

the Gold Coast.

Posting a major pedigree update last weekend

was Lot 528, the 6-year-old mare Precious Gem, who

captured the Robert Sangster Classic (Aus-I) at Mor-

phettville.

The first group I winner for Caulfield Guineas

(Aus-I)-winning sire Econsul, Precious Gem comes

from a powerful group I-producing family.

INDUSTRYANALYSIS with Tom LaMarra

NEW LIFE FOR OLD HILLTOP?

At about this time last year The Stronach Group,

which owns Pimlico Race Course and Laurel

Park, floated a rather heavy trial balloon when the

company revealed it was looking at moving the

Preakness (gr. I) from Old Hilltop to Laurel, which

is undergoing extensive renovations.

It's not that the Maryland Jockey Club doesn't

like Pimlico or respect its history; it's more about

the massive and rather expensive rebuilding

project needed to make Pimlico more inviting

and increase Preakness revenue via upscale

amenities the track currently can't offer.

The relocation

idea immediately

generated commen-

tary and debate. The

Preakness is highly

treasured by Balti-

more, and Maryland

lawmakers are keen-

ly aware of that.

The dialogue was

also the impetus

for the state to look

more closely at Pim-

lico via the Maryland

Stadium Authority,

which counts among

its projects Camden

Yards, home of Major

League Baseball's Baltimore Orioles. It was an

interesting development because one of the au-

thority's mandates is creating public-private part-

nerships for financing and operating facilities.

Earlier this year the authority approved a

request from the Maryland Racing Commission,

which falls under the state Department of Labor,

Licensing, and Regulation, to authorize a study.

The stated goal is simple: The study "will evalu-

ate Pimlico Race Course's ability to serve as the

permanent home for the Preakness Stakes."

The two-phase study will cost about

$280,000. According to published reports,

this preliminary examination won't result in a

master plan. That, of course, could come later,

pending results.

Last year the Maryland Department of Busi-

ness and Economic Development compiled sta-

tistics on the impact of the Preakness in 2014.

Visitors to the Preakness and related activities

during the week, spent about $10.2 million; in-

cluding indirect impacts, total Preakness visitor

spending was about $31.4 million.

Gross spending on Preakness day totaled

$8.2 million. with more than $2.8 million spent

at Pimlico on food and beverage according to

the analysis.

The MJC has

creatively managed

to work around the

interior limitations

of the Pimlico fa-

cility via a growing

stable of infield VIP

tents and sponsors.

Despite its age the

Pimlico facility has

its share of sup-

porters, particularly

those who value it as

a racing throwback—

albeit, one in need of

some serious work.

There may be a

better chance Laurel hosts a Breeders' Cup before

a Preakness. The MJC expressed interest in the

World Championships as has the state, which this

year approved legislation to fund the return of the

Washington, D.C., International turf race to Laurel.

Laurel clearly will be the primary home of Mar-

yland Thoroughbred racing. But it's not a stretch

to believe Pimlico, through a new financing struc-

ture, will remain the long-term home of the Preak-

ness in conjunction with a boutique meet that

better showcases horse racing in the state. BH
