Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

The Easter season ended last Sunday with the Solemnity of Pentecost and we are now in Ordinary Time. We celebrate the Solem-nity of the Most Holy Trinity every year on the first Sunday of Ordinary Time after Pentecost.During Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter we have been reflecting upon the action of God in history, the way He relates to cre-ation, His work of redemption. During Advent and Christmas we ponder with special intensity the Incarnation of the Eternal Word of God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity. During Lent and Easter we concentrate on the Paschal Mystery and conclude with a contemplation of the Holy Spirit.

In theological circles, the action of God in creation, His relation to created reality, the outward life and manifestation of the Trin-ity is usually referred to as the Economic Trinity, whereas the inner life of God, and the relationships between the Three Divine Persons is referred to as the Immanent Trinity. A famous theologian of the 20th century laid out an equation to remind us that the Immanent Trinity is equal to the Economic Trinity. In fact, the Economic Trinity is not only equal to the Immanent Trinity, it is identical because the Economic Trinity and the Immanent Trinity is one and the same God. It is simply a distinction that theologians make in order to be able to delve into the mystery of God and study on the one hand His relation with creation and on the other hand His own inner life. Having looked at the Economic Trinity throughout the Easter season, on this Sunday the Church invites to look at the mystery of God Himself. It is a good opportunity to contemplate the Immanent Trinity. There are many things we know about God, some of them because we can discern them with the power of our reason, others because God Himself has revealed them to us and yet others that we can infer using the powers of reason from that which was revealed to us by God.

The science of metaphysics, the philosophy of being, enables us to reach the conclusion that at the origin of everything that ex-ists there is one and only one source of all being. Human reason can discover the existence of a being that exists by himself and for himself, who has not received his existence from anybody else and is the source of everything that exists. For example, the ancient Greek philosophers were polytheistic because they followed the religion of ancient Greece, yet many of them came to the conclusion that there was one and only one source of all being. Aristotelian metaphysics leads to the conclusion that such being is one. Yet this “god of the philosophers” is not the true God, the God of Israel, the God of Jesus Christ, whom we know because He has revealed Himself to us.Of course, even though we know a great deal about God, about his inner life, about his plan for creation and his action in the history of the universe, there is much more that we do not know. That is why the Church maintains that God is a mystery, not because He is an enigma, much less a puzzle to be solved, but simply because our knowledge of Him does not exhaust the reality of God. We do not know everything about him yet we know everything we need to enter into communion with Him. That is why heaven will be a constant discovery for us and there will be no boredom at all, because we will be rejoicing in the presence of God and sharing to the fullest possible extent in His own inner life. The greatest insight that we received about the nature of God himself is obviously the person of Jesus Christ and the revelation of God as love. It is precisely that insight that enabled St. Augustine to achieve a major breakthrough in the study of the inner life of God, in Trinitarian theology.

There are three persons in the one, true God, precisely because He is love, and because He is love, He loves. Naturally, the first object of the love of God is God Himself, but it is not navel gazing, narcissistic love, it is truly ecstatic love in the etymological sense of the word ecstasy. It is love that goes out of Himself. So God is the lover, the one who loves; He is also the object of His own love, the beloved; and He is love itself. The font of all love reveals Himself as Father, the beloved is revealed as the Son and the bond of love uniting Father and Son is revealed as the Holy Spirit. When it comes to the revelation of God and theological discussion there are many things that remain obscure, because he is still a mystery. That is why theologians must tread very carefully lest they create confusion. Every analogy that is used to explain the inner life of God may illumine one aspect but obscure another. Take for example the famous case of our patron saint, St. Patrick, who tried to explain the Trinity. The shamrock leaf illustrates the fact that the three persons are united but at the same time obscures the fact that the three persons of the Holy Trinity are fully God. The Father is not 1/3 God, nor is the Son, nor the Holy Spirit. The Father is 100 % God and so is the Son and so the Holy Spirit. In our times, because of the dominant ideology frequently denounced by Pope Francis, some people are uncomfortable with the fact that God revealed Himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit and they revert to ancient heresies known as Sabellianism or Modalism which described the three persons in terms of the roles ascribed to them. Of course, God does not reveal Himself as Father because he is a projection of human fatherhood; on the contrary, human fathers ought to model themselves after the Father. Furthermore, as Pope John Paul II liked to point out repeatedly, the Fatherhood of God is described in the Bible with attributes that pertain to human motherhood, most especially in the books of the prophets Isaiah, Hosea and the Psalms. One thing we ought to be clear about, the Trinity is not a theological concept that has no implications for our daily life. The universe is full of what St. Augustine referred to as “vestiges” of the Trinity and we do well to ponder constantly in our hearts the mystery of God, His life and His love for us in order to grow in communion with Him who created us and desires to share with us His own divine life.
