The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] The great ice storm of 2013 was really something, wasn’t it? Oh wait, most of us didn’t get much ice did we? Isn’t it funny how a weather forecast can really shake us up? Most of Saturday evening into early Sunday morning, I would wake up and check outside – looking for ice or snow. I would listen carefully to make sure the furnace was still churning – hoping we didn’t lose power. Worry – it never really helps, only distracts and discourages. The Apostle Peter was a real worrier at times. He worried about Jesus’ declaration that He must die an awful death and in the midst of worry, Peter blurted out “that will never happen!” A terrible rebuke from Jesus followed. Peter was actually walking on the water when it happened again – he started to worry, and before long, he was doing the breast-stroke or the back-stroke, and had to be saved by Jesus. I wonder if that is why, late in his first epistle, much later in his life, Peter simply states these helpful words: “cast all your cares on the Lord, because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) Pretty good plan, when an ice storm is coming, or the doctor’s office has called, or another storm of life is near. Just give it to the Lord – He can handle it! Thanks to those of you who have responded to needs in our ministries, especially during our interim period without a children’s minister. Here are some needs that continue to exist (and a couple of new ones). If you think you could help in one of these areas, please email me or call the church office and let Peggy know.

#1 – Teachers for grade school students during Families at First. 6:30 pm on Wednesdays, January 30 through April 3

We need a team of teachers to assist our current staff – lessons are all ready to go and the teaching slot is just 15 minutes.

#2 – Second service Junior Church staff. 11am on

Sundays We need staff (and especially adult males) to assist Diane Rogers and her team with our Junior Church program.

#3 – Table and chair setup for Families at First (and

other programs). We will setup chairs at 9 am on Wednesday mornings and will take down tables and chairs at either 7:45 pm on Wednesday or Thursday mornings, depending on the team. This team could also help with table/chair setup and takedown for Ladies Night Out and Young at Heart.

#4 – VBS staff. 2013 VBS will be June 17-21

We need many slots filled as we do every year. Look for more information in the weeks ahead.

I look forward to hearing from several of you! Have a great week and spend time in John 6 as we dive into “Jesus: I Am the Bread of Life” this Sunday. Blessings, GT

Young at Heart David Buck, Coordinator

God is good even when our circumstances are not! He doesn’t always give us our heart’s desires immediately after we ask, but He knows the right timing for everything and we can trust Him. He wants us to develop a deep, personal relationship with Him and an outrageous love for Him, so much so that we realize we can’t live without Him. This kind of relationship and love brings the worshipful attitude that God wants us to have. Knowing God intimately is more important than getting what we want immediately. Lord, we know that You are always with us and we don’t have to be afraid. Help us to keep our eyes on You. Amen. Our first meeting will have Kenny and Chrissy from the Bement Country Opry on the 6th of February. They always bring a little Rick Roy and Elvis to our memories. Looking forward to many programs in the future! Let us know if you have one you’d like to have. “Memories are perhaps the best gifts of all.” - Gloria Gaither We are going to the Barn in Goodfield for a night of fellowship and laughter on the 14th of February. It will be an evening filled with laughter, warm hearts, and good food. Then we’ll be off to Starved Rock on March 28th for some more good food and a stage play. April 11th we will travel to White Pine State Park for an another stage play and good food. May will take us to the riverboat for big band music and sailing on the riverboat Celebration. “Cheerfulness and contentment are great beautifiers and are famous preservers of youthful looks.” - Charles Dickens God has given you the gifts, talents, abilities, and grace you need to do His will in life. God’s grace is actually His power and He will not only give you grace, but promises grace and more grace. He never runs out. His power is available to you! Now , if you don’t keep the right mind set, the enemy can defeat you with thoughts of inadequacy, but if you make up your mind that you can do what you need to do, you’ll find yourself able to do it, not in your own strength, but in the strength God gives you. “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” James 4:6 (KJV)

You probably have heard the saying, “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.” Sounds a little confusing, I know…. However, it is a statement that can be applied to the Sunday morning worship gathering. If I was to take a poll and ask, “What is the “main thing” in worship,” I know that I would receive any number of answers. Some would say the preaching is the main thing. Others would say it’s the music. Still others would indicate that the invitation, the prayer time, or the Lord’s Supper is the “main thing.” Let’s take a look at what the New Testament says about the worship and how it applies to the Sunday morning gathering. We know from looking in the book of Acts that it was common for the early Christians to meet regularly to study scripture and prayer and for fellowship. (Acts 2:42) Many believe that this included the Lord’s Supper while others believe this was just a fellowship meal (or potluck dinner). The Lord’s Supper was certainly a part of the worship experience (I Cor. 11). Colossians 3:16 tells us to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” So there was certainly singing and teaching in the worship service. Interestingly, there is never a commandment given to sing an “invitation hymn” at the close of every sermon. In fact, the occurrence of the “invitation” or altar call did not take place in worship until the 1800’s during the tent revivals. That doesn’t mean there were no invitations offered….I think Acts 2:38 is a very powerful invitation for salvation: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” But I digress! Actually, Romans 12:1 gives us the clearest picture of what worship should be… “Present your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.” There are other translations that say “…reasonable act of service.” In other words, everything we do should be done as service or worship to the Lord! So, what is the “main thing” in worship? Simply put, that we do it! Psalm 29 tells us to, “Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Nothing there tells how to worship the Lord, it just tells us to worship. In other words, there isn’t a right or a wrong way to worship God as long as we worship Him…that’s the main thing!
