What an amazing Summer we are having! We have started our term with eleven new children; five new families. I have been very impressed at the way our Toko kids have made the new children feel welcome. We have also opened our fifth classroom, AKA the Library Class, with Mr Sanderson. The classroom organisation is: Room 1 - Miss Scott (AKA Mrs Bismark) – Year 0/1 Library Class – Mr Sanderson – Year 2/3 Room 2 – Mrs Frost – Year 3/4 Room 3 – Mrs Sanderson – Year 4/5/6 Room 4 – Miss Armstrong – Year 6/7/8 Our Library has now been relocated to the Dental Clinic and will be fully operational in the coming weeks. My personal thanks to Pam and my staff (and helpers) for moving HUNDREDS of books over the holidays! Pam has the new space looking great. Keep an eye out on Facebook for when we have it open. Last month the annual school wash-down was done and the paint touch-ups have been started. Now that the classrooms are looking sharp on the inside and the outside, it’s time to turn our attention to the grounds. We need your help! Next Thursday from 5.30pm we are holding our Welcome Back BBQ & Working Bee. We would love help with clearing garden beds and removing shrubs and trees, in preparation for landscaping all garden areas. If you have a trailer and would be happy to take away green waste on the night, please let me know! We would love as many people to muck in as possible. Our aim is to have all of the landscaping complete and well-established by the Jubilee at Labour Weekend. We look forward to another action-packed year! Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to 2018! What an amazing Summer we are having!

We have started our term with eleven new children; five new families. I have been very impressed at the way our Toko kids have made the new children feel welcome. We have also opened our fifth classroom, AKA the Library Class, with Mr Sanderson. The classroom organisation is:

Room 1 - Miss Scott (AKA Mrs Bismark) – Year 0/1 Library Class – Mr Sanderson – Year 2/3 Room 2 – Mrs Frost – Year 3/4 Room 3 – Mrs Sanderson – Year 4/5/6 Room 4 – Miss Armstrong – Year 6/7/8

Our Library has now been relocated to the Dental Clinic and will be fully operational in the coming weeks.

Admin Announcements Fish and Chip Lunches: On sale tomorrow Friday 9 February - $4.00 for fish & chips, sausage & chips, hot dog & chips or chicken patty & chips. Please order at the store before school. School Dental Van: Due to problems with the dental van and therapists last year, we didn’t get our yearly visit. This week we have had an email informing us that the estimated time will be mid March and if parents have any urgent request or pain issues they can contact the 0800 0825583 number and they will be transferred to the first available clinic. Lunchboxes: It is an expectation that all children have a lunchbox/lunch bag at school every day. All children are required to take their lunchbox/bag to the eating area every day. That way they can put their containers/rubbish and any uneaten food straight back into their lunchbox/bag before going to play. This way we reduce the rubbish around the school grounds, you get to see what has/hasn’t been eaten, and less small containers get lost! Thanks for you cooperation with this. Book Bags: It is an expectation that all children have a book bag at school every day. These bags protect our reading books, Library books and Homework Books, as well as being a great place to put important school notices that need to go home. We don’t mind what the book bag is made of, but it needs to be at least A4 in size. You could get creative and make a fabric one, or use a laptop sleeve for example. The Book Bag is a great place to look if your child looks blank when you ask, “Did you get a newsletter today?” Check the Book Bag! Water-resistant ones (with a clear zippered pocket) can be purchased cheaply from Office Product Depot (in store or online). Togs: All classes swim most days, so please remind your child to bring their togs and towel EVERY day to school. Please NAME these items.

Bus Stop: Parents are asked to not stop on the bus stop when dropping off or picking up children as our bus needs to be by the front gate for safety. Parents are welcome to use the hall car park and students will use the under road tunnel to get to the hall. Students cannot go across the main road either to the store or the hall. We have limited parking on Tokomaru East Road so encourage you to use the hall parking. Toys: While it is exciting for children to bring and share toys at school, it is often a distraction to learning, and can be an interruption when toys go missing or get broken. We therefore ask that NO TOYS come to school unless they are needed/requested as part of your child’s learning.

Lollies: Sweets, lollies and chewing/bubble gum etc of any kind are NOT to be brought to school. If any of these items are brought to school, they will be held by the office until a parent can collect them.

Wheels: We have noticed an increasing number of children wearing “Wheelies” to school (shoes with wheels built in). While these shoes are pretty cool, and lots of fun, they also have wheels and therefore for safety, the rules around wheels apply; no helmet, no wheels. We have seen a few near-misses already! For the full expectations about wheels, pick up a copy of our Parent Handbook or go to the ‘Info’ page of our website.

Sports Announcements HWC Junior Youth Touch: The second half of the 2017/2018 season gets underway on Friday 16th February. The part of the season does not count towards play-off points as finals and prizegiving was last year. However these final four weeks are a great way to spend the last of our summer weather on a Friday afternoon/evening! Your child will be playing in the same team as last year (you were asked last year to indicate that you would continue this side of the season), and will therefore receive a new uniform. If you have misplaced the contact details for your team coach/manger, please contact us at school. The draw should be out early next week, and the link is also on our school website (Newsletters and Notices page).

Basketball: We are calling for all interested Y5-8 players (who are considering joining a school team for this year’s season) to be part of pre-season training sessions with Coach Logan. These will be held at school (in the hall) each Tuesday lunchtime and will begin shortly. We would love to enter a Y5/6 team and a Y7/8 team this year but will need managers for these teams. Coach Logan is happy to coach, but needs a couple of parents who are happy to support the team at each game. Games are usually held on Wednesday (Y7/8) or Thursday nights (Y5/6) at Arena Manawatu from May. We will call for Y3/4 players in the coming weeks.

Triathlons: Weetbix Tryathlon (20th March 7-15yrs) and I Tri’d the Tri Series
