Hey!Incase you couldn’t tell from the cover,it’s a new year for T’HUD Magazine.

This issue is a little skinnier than usual – we’re getting everything prepped for a great year ahead and really couldn’t resist giving a little teaser of what’s to come. So here’s our Fresh edition! It’s just a little bite of a full issue, but it includes a fl avor of things to come as well as a taste of each of our sections. Can you tell I’m hungry?

In future issues it’ll be even more jam-packed (I’m still doing the food puns) with more recipes, comedy, opinions, reviews, advice, and general fun – all written by YOU. We’d love everyone and anyone who wants to write, illustrate, design, or take photographs (and get their work in print) to join us – if you fancy it, email [email protected] or visit us on our social media. You don’t need experience to join!

I’m really honoured, personally, to get to take T’HUD into a new year and a new direction as the new editor. We’ll be posting more and more online, looking at new innovations and ways to talk to our readers, reinventing our social media presence, and hopefully putting out really great articles that YOU want to read on a regular basis. Make sure to check out our website at www.t-hud.co.uk for more!

So for now, we really hope you love our mini issue. Look out for our proper full issue soon!

T'HUD Life

1.First off, there is a night for every day of the week.Tokyo, Camel, Revolution, Five Bar… they

are all open at least one day a week so you’re always covered for any impromptu nights out with the fl atmates. Even on Sundays you can pop into Wetherspoons! One thing’s for sure – you’ll fi nd yourself using the phrase “you’re only a fresher once” a lot more than you expected.

2. Cheap food and drinks. Are £10 nights out your kind of thing? If yes, perfect! If not, then that will soon

change. There is no place like Huddersfi eld for the Wednesday student night. £1 Jäger Bombs? Go on then!

8 things to

expect from

a night out in

Huddersfi eldAfter a whole year of spending my loan (and secretly my overdraft) on partying and nights out around Huddersfi eld, I have defi nitely seen enough to last me a lifetime. As a fresher, you are probably already wondering where to go, what to wear and who knows what else, and although I can’t help you with everything I can defi nitely tell you a few things to expect! Here are the top eight things to watch out for:

By Claire Walker // Illustrations by Charlotte Clarke

Page 5: T'HUD Mag #19

3.SocialsOn student night, there will be socials everywhere. From

cheerleaders dressing up as minions to the Rugby League with their Jäger bomb challenges, there is a lot to join in with (or even just laugh at). Be careful though, you might see a rugby league player dressed in a bikini. I once heard they ran through town naked… but let’s not get into that. You have been warned!

4. The Warehouse MinesweeperYou might have already heard, but there is a frequent visitor to The

Warehouse who - no word of a lie - goes around drinking the dregs of drinks just left on tables. Keep an eye on your booze, unless you want it to disappear!

5. An Ear.Yep, you read that right. A man had his ear bitten off on a night out in

Huddersfi eld. It defi nitely doesn’t happen often so don’t worry, but maybe now is a good time to bring earmuffs into fashion…

8 things to expect from a night out in Huddersfi eld

5

After all that, I hope I haven’t scared you off! Huddersfi eld may be a bit bonkers at times (and that’s putting it lightly), but there’s always good places open with good friends, good

music, and a great atmosphere.

6.Louie’s Liquor Store signs.Louie’s Liquors has a sign outside that changes regularly, and it

is always amusing to see which phrase they’ve put up for the week. Recently there have been such gems as “We love Bourbon more than Kanye loves Kanye” and “The best place for a meaningful overnight relationship.” Keep your eye out for a laugh while you’re walking through town!

7. Events.Although visiting a bar or club can be fun in itself, it is even better when

there is an event on! Traffi c light party, foam party, hot tub party, frat party, fi ve fest, big fat ball, Spring Break, UV party… you name it, there’s probably an event for it!

8.Club Photographers.Watch Out. They manage to capture you in your worst drunken

state at your worst angle. Imagine all those selfi es in your recently deleted folder. Now imagine that, but 10x worse and all over Facebook. Good luck getting an elusive good photo – I’ve spent night after night trying!

COFFEE OFFCAMPUS

Sometimes you just want to get away from it all and relax with a nice bit of quality caffeine. Whether it’s for chilled-out alone time, meetings with

friends or somewhere to get a quick boost during stressful deadlines, here are some of our favourite coffee places in town.

Right across the road from uni, Coffee Kabin is THE place to go for a high-quality brew just a stone’s throw away. But there’s more – as well as coffees and a ton of different teas, Coffee Kabin also do light lunches, proper meals, charcuterie boards, and even wine and craft beers! Food includes healthy

breakfasts, comfort foods like nachos or lasagna, paninis and sandwiches for lunch, as well as really good burgers. All ingredients are locally sourced and pretty damn delicious, with a warm and artsy atmosphere inside. Perfect for morning, afternoon or night – whatever you fancy, Coffee Kabin will deliver.

ESPRESSO CORNER

COFFEEVOLUTION

№3

First thing’s first – Espresso Corner have a bike hanging from the wall. An actual, literal bicycle. There are also old school desks (graffiti and all) to sit at when you get inside. That tells you something about the kind of place Espresso Corner is – with a cool London vibe

An indie coffee shop with a difference, Coffeevolution has fine-tuned the atmosphere inside to be relaxed and modern without being condescending. A really warm and cozy place to sit and chat with friends, they also produce some of the tastiest and more unusual coffees around – and the staff are really friendly too. Try the Monkey Nut latte with hazelnut syrup, whipped cream and marshmallows or the green smoothie.

Both are really damn delicious.

Located right next door to the nearby Lawrence Batley Theatre, Queenies is a warm and welcom-ing coffee shop. More like your traditional café, Queenies serve gorgeous cakes and great coffee – and you can soak up a bit of culture at the LBT

while you’re in the area.

Not even technically a coffee shop – that’s how much we love Creams. This tearoom with a fancy feel is an amazing place to go for afternoon treats with friends, or for a nice day out with your mum.

Yum!

inside, some astonishingly good sandwiches and artisan food and drink offerings, this place is a little slice of the city in the middle of Huddersfield town centre. A really great place to chill out with a book or maybe an essay to write – and obviously the coffee is pretty amazing too.

THE BEST SPORTS YOU'RE NOT PLAYING (YET)

Horse Riding (HUHR)Unless you lived near a farm or are as posh as Jack Whitehall on “Fresh Meat”, chances are you never got the opportunity to try riding a fully grown horse. So if you have ever had the slightest desire to try horse riding, this is the opportunity of a lifetime! With a year’s full membership starting at £30 and lessons being an incredibly low £11 each, HUHR is incredibly affordable. Should Horse Riding get the membership it needs, this sports club has a bright future ahead, and it’s worth giving it a go.facebook.com/huddshorseriders

Belly DancingSorry fellas, this one is for girls only. Belly dancing is spiritual, mentally cleansing and a great way to stay in shape. The girls at belly dancing have a great time and have done a fantastic job creating a friendly and fun atmosphere for those who go. Dance is proven to improve body confidence and spiritually as well as helping people feel happier with themselves both physically and sexually. I would recommend anyone to try it - the benefits for young people are obvious and university is the best place to explore these culturally extraordinary practices.facebook.com/bellydancehud

Ultimate FrisbeeIf you fancy yourself as someone who takes inspiration from our friends across the pond in America, there is a sport that is perfect for you. No, it’s not American Football or Basketball – it’s Ultimate Frisbee! This is not the Frisbee that you played with your dad in the park – it is fast paced, crazy, and generally those that try it are surprised at how much fun they have. Ultimate Frisbee is self-refereeing too, proving that rules aren’t a big part of the game and that those who play will undoubtedly be nice, genuine people. If they aren’t, get physical with them, it’s self-refereed!facebook.com/HuddersfieldUltimate

Surfing (Hudd Surf)Huddersfield isn’t exactly known for its waves, so a surfing sports team probably wasn’t what you were expecting to see on this list. But the passionate people at Hudd Surf made surfing accessible for our students, so take advantage! Not only does saying you surf give a serious boost to your Tinder profile, but it also will majorly increase your physical fitness and give you an opportunity to be whisked away to the waves and coasts of England. facebook.com/HuddSurf

FRESHER'S STYLE

WARDROBE ON A BUDGET

A checkered shirt can be a classic staple paired with jeans for a more relaxed look, or try adding a waistcoat to help transition it into night. Similarly a checkered shirt can be worn as a jacket over a vest, t-shirt, or even a dress. Checkered Shirt - £12.99 H&M // Tan Waistcoat - £19.99 New Look

Ankle boots and a patterned blazer can brighten a plain outfit and be a worthy investment throughout the year. Though they may cost a little bit more, they can be worn any number of different ways to really make the most of your money.Floral Blazer - £22.99 New Look // Suede Boots - £16 Primark

A long shirt can also be very versatile - try wearing it with these suede shorts or this blue skirt (only £8!) to pull the look together for day or night.Crinkle Shirt - £32 Topshop // Suede Shorts - £17.99 New Look // Cobalt Skirt - £8 Boohoo

This vest and this t-shirt are simple and cost very little but the small details like lace panelling can instantly make an outfit more interesting. They can also be layered under a jumper in cooler weather or work perfectly in the summer on their own.Vest - £5 Primark // White T-shirt - £8 Boohoo // Grey Marl Jumper - £20 Next

By Amy White

Although student grants are a promising sign, the expenses of a university lifestyle can mean you might have to budget where you spend your money – which unfortunately

means nice clothes sometimes get put on hold.

So to help you out, I’ve put together this collection of outfits to suit most budgets - and mixing the different items can mean you get even more wear from your clothes while still

looking stylish throughout the different seasons!

Entertainment

HUDLIVELive music is one of those things that, no matter what you are into (or what you’re not into) you can immerse yourself in the live experience and share ‘that moment’ with the crowd around you. There’s just something about being surrounded by sweaty people, booze and great music that is strangely enticing and also comforting.

I am a big music lover, but even people who aren’t ‘that into’ music, when placed in a crowd of people sharing a moment together at a gig, can make the most of hanging out and having a great time. One thing is for sure - HudLive is set to give the music lover and the anti-music man an event to remember.

Huddersfield SU’s Freshers’ week line-up looks ace, to say the least. Jam-packed with a host of exciting events, there is something for everyone at Freshers’ with nights out like HudCrawl (the official Freshers' Bar Crawl)

and HudComedy at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, as well as a host of daytime events like the Vintage Fair and Campus Tea Party.

One event that I'm particularly looking forward to as a music lover is HudLive.Happening at Storthes Hall, it’s been announced that Sigma will be the headliners for the massive event. Famous with hits such as Changing ft. Paloma Faith and Nobody To Love, Sigma have got me - and most other Freshers’ - psyched for the whole event. One fellow fresher said that having seen Sigma once already, they were excited to see them again - especially in the company of all the new Hud-bloods. Others were eager to see such a good line-up for the evening, and are saving Friday 25th September as a ‘must-go’ date in their Freshers’ diaries.

Other HudLive acts on the night include MistaJam, a DJ who looks set to get us all

moving to some great mixes. MistaJam is a pioneer in the DJ business, so I am super excited to see what he brings to the festival experience.

Another great talent performing at HudLive this year is the awesome band, The Carnabys. With ace tunes such as Is That My Body and their latest track Where I’d Rather Be, their set looks to be full of energy and is bound to get everyone dancing to their catchy riffs and singing along with their clever wordplay. Last but not least on the music front, Huddersfield duo LewRey look set to give a cracking show for the second year in a row, with their soulful vocals and pop music combination. These guys are definitely ones not to miss and will be sure to give us all a refreshing and gripping performance.

As great as HudLive is already squaring up to be, there are plenty of other great events

planned for Freshers’ that definitely shouldn’t be overlooked. Fancy a laugh? Share a giggle with British comedian Joe Lycett, whose unique brand of comedy has appeared on shows such as Live At The Apollo and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and he’s bound to create an abundance of laughter and deliver a performance full of hilarity.

Overall, Freshers’ week looks set to be an unforgettable seven days. As a first year student myself, I am looking forward to a week of excellent entertainment in good company.

Freshers’ week is a great way to meet other students and ease the nerves of moving away and starting uni life while meeting new people. There’s so much to look forward to before the course deadlines begin, so make sure to get involved. I definitely will be!
