Fairview High School is a learning community that experiences success by
challenging the potential of all who come through our doors.
Principal Message
Welcome to 2016!! A new year is always a prime opportunity to reflect on what was and to look
ahead to the future with optimism. The great thing about the future is that we have the ability to
both impact and shape it. For students, it is very much a time to make the next year one that is
positive and leaves you in a better situation at the end of the year than you were at the beginning.
That is why education is so important – we are all able to learn something new every day and if
we do that, the learning process never stops!
At FHS it is our goal to have all students experience success. With the first Semester ending in a
few weeks and a new one beginning in the days after, it is very much an opportunity for students to take stock of where
they are in their educational development. Parents and students should use the report cards they receive to provide
feedback regarding students’ educational achievement and progress. For students in high school who will be completing
final exams in the next few weeks there should be a period of responsible study to prepare for those examinations. If
they prepare diligently for their examinations, I am certain they will experience appropriate success.
Another item of importance to schools and parents is the Accountability Pillar Surveys that Alberta Education will be
conducting from January to the end of February. As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability
Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for
success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys of students, parents and teachers on various
aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of
student learning.
In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from Alberta Education. Students at
FHS have already completed their survey online at the school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about
experiences with the school.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is
receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016, and will be reported publicly as part of their 3-Year
Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
That’s it for me for this month. I encourage all parents/guardians to remain abreast of their son/daughter’s progress at
school. Should there be any need for any further information or clarifications do not hesitate to call or email the school.
Happy New Year and all the best for 2016.

Pillar
Surveys
As an annual check-up on the
education system, the Accountability
Pillar provides an opportunity for
Alberta Education and school
authorities to ensure that we are
equipping students for success.
The Accountability Pillar uses a set of
16 indicators consisting of surveys of
students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as
dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student
learning. From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting
the annual Accountability Pillar Survey.
In January, parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10 will receive a survey from
Alberta Education. In February, all teachers will be completing their surveys
online at school.
Students at Fairview High School have already completed their surveys online at the
school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the
school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese,
Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.
Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the
quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your
survey promptly.
Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016, and will be reported
publicly as part of their 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.
School Bus Drop-off
Pickup safety.
There have been some recent concerns
with private vehicles entering the drop
off loop in front of the school while
school busses are loading/unloading
students. This is both unsafe and not permitted. We ask that all parents/
guardians adhere to the signage that is posted to ensure the safety of all
students at the beginning and conclusion of each school
day. Your cooperation is appreciated as we work together to
provide for the safety of students.
January
Parents: Have a Voice in Education
In January and February many parents will
receive a survey in their mailbox from
Alberta Education. Please take a few
moments to complete this survey - your participation is very important to us.
The responses collected in the survey are provided to and reviewed by all school staff, the
board of trustees and the Alberta Government so that we can learn what is working in schools
and what needs improvement. Your answers to the questions in the survey will be considered
in school and divisional planning and therefore will have a direct impact on your child’s
educational experience. This important annual survey provides you with another way to be
involved in decision making at your child’s school.
The survey is mailed to parents in grades 4, 7 and 10 (unless the school has fewer than 120
students in grades 4-12 in which case the survey will be expanded to include all students and
parents). To ensure we receive as many responses back from parents as possible, the survey
comes with a postage paid return envelope.
Thank you in advance for your time spent in completing the survey. Through working and
learning together, your input and involvement makes our schools great places to grow, learn
and be. Paul Bennett Superintendent of Schools Peace River School Division No. 10
Spotlight on Health and Safety
The internet plays a large role in our education, our careers and our everyday
lives. The internet provides us with the means to connect, collaborate, research,
learn, socialize and communicate with others in real-time. While this provides
great opportunity for society, it also poses certain risks.
As we cannot always protect our students from all of the dangers of the internet, it is important that we be
aware of what they view and what they share about themselves online. In our schools and at home, it is
essential that we educate our children about internet safety, model and encourage safe practices and positive
digital citizenship. Technology safety is a shared responsibility and we value and appreciate our Technology
Department, school staff and the support and partnership from our parents and school communities.
For more information regarding safe practices online, check out the following links:

Parents can also view individual school Learning and Technology Plans on their child’s school website for
detailed information regarding digital citizenship practices and expectations.

Peer Mentoring at Fairview High School
The Peer-to-Peer Project is starting up again at Fairview High School. The program engages students in creating a
welcoming, caring, respectful and safe school community through the development of positive mentoring relationships.
Senior students earn CTS credits by spending weekly time with another student at FHS being a friend, role model, and confidant. Students participate in games,
activities, crafts, conversation and goal-setting from February until the end of the school year. Peer mentors listen to their mentees, provide support and guidance,
help them to build communication and social skills, and develop a friendship based
on trust and respect.
Students who are interested in participating in the Peer-to-Peer Project can speak to Ms. Hobbs for
more information.
Grief and Loss Support
Spectrum is a small group program that guides youth through the grief and loss that comes with painful life transitions such as death and divorce. Students meet weekly for 12 weeks during PULSE block to participate in activities and discussions from February 9nd to April 26th.
To sign up for the free program, students and parents can contact Dayna Hobbs

speak with the junior high students about
her personal experiences with mental health
as a retired member of the RCMP.
Deanna led the students through a
mindfulness activity and discussed healthy
coping strategies and the importance of
reaching out to adults for support.
Thank you to Deanna for spending time
with our students and donating her book

Senior High Ladies
The FHS Ladies Cobras and Fairview High Athletics
would like to thank Dunvegan Inn and Suites for
their generous donation to the program. This
donation allowed the ladies to obtain warm up
jerseys and will help with travel to
Camrose and Calgary this year.
UPDATE— > The weekend of January 8th and
9th was a very successful weekend for the Cobra Ladies. Our Senior High
Cobras drove to the OLMP Invitational in Camrose. In their first game,
they beat St. Augustine High School, from Ponoka, handily, 82-25. This placed them in the semi-finals
against Ermineskin Jr. Sr. High School, where the once again took a large lead in the first half, going on to
an easy 57-20 win.
In the finals, the girls played a perennial strong team from Viking. The girls were in the game all the way,
leading after the first quarter, down by one after the half and down by three after three quarters. They kept
this dfferntial until the final three minutes of the game but were unable to hold off a late charge by the
Vikes, falling 62-44.
With the girls taking home silver this year, they have medaled at this tournament each of the last three years,
winning gold in 2013-14 and bronze 2014-15.
