Ultimate Fighting Championship

Founded in the U.S. in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was established to find the martial art that would be the most effective in unarmed combat situations. Competitors quickly realized that their chances of winning were enhanced when they learned and became proficient in multiple disciplines and techniques. The UFC today is the largest promoter of the fighting style that evolved from those early contests, called mixed martial arts.

How Winners are Declared

UFC fights are conducted inside a 750-square-foot octagon. Championship bouts consist of five rounds of up to five minutes each, with a minute rest period between rounds. Nonchampionship bouts are three rounds long. A fighter wins a UFC fight in one of three ways:

1. Submission, sometimes called “saying Uncle.” A fighter uses a choke hold or a joint lock on the other fighter. These are highly effective and somewhat hazardous holds that can cause a fighter to pass out or experience excruciating pain.

Conclusion

2. Decision. If both fighters are standing at the end of the bout, the victory is awarded to the fighter who accumulates the greater number of points, as determined by a panel of three licensed judges.

3. Knockout. The most dramatic way to end a fight, a knockout either renders a fighter unconscious or so disoriented that he’s unable to defend himself.
