BMW program gaining traction in Mexicoby Matthew [email protected]

BMW Manufacturing Co. has offered full-time jobs to all 30 graduates of its latest Scholars Program.

Now, that program, which itself was mod-eled a�er the traditional apprentice program o ered by �e BMW Group in its German facilities, is heading south of the border to Mexico as BMW prepares to open another production facility in San Luis Potosi.

�e plant in Mexico is not expected to be online and producing vehicles until 2019, but the company has started actively training ap-prentices to work on the production �oor as soon as the plant becomes operational.

“It is actually a work-live program and it’s basically in all of our plants,” said Joy Tirado, coordinator of the training program in Mexi-co. “We decided to start the program from the ground up along with the plant.”

Tirado, a former supervisor for the Schol-ars Program at Plant Spartanburg, relocated

to Mexico in 2015 to build a similar program. While the program is in full swing, Tirado said there have been some challenges along the way.

One being partnerships. �e Scholars Program at Plant Spartanburg partners with Greenville Technical College, Spartanburg Community College and Tri-County Tech-nical College to ensure that members of the program obtain an associate degree while

It’s a unique venue. e scoreboard can be used for non-game day events, and a group could have cocktails on the �eld and dinner in the club. “Charleston has a lot of unique venues, but this one is a home run,” Ervin says.

“Our executive chef, Tim Morton, is in charge of the menu,” says Graham Ervin, director of sales

for Mercantile and Mash. “We have a commitment to working with local farmers and artisan purveyors. Everything is fresh.” Mercantile and Mash is part of e Indigo Road Restaurant Group, and the Riley Park Club menu includes favorites from its other restaurants such as O-Ku and Oak Steakhouse, as
