1. What is USGenWeb?1. What is USGenWeb?

• loosely based group of volunteers; diverse people working on a variety of projects

• not a formal organization; not a commercial project

• idea behind it: to organize information first by state and then by county

2. History

• started out with the KY Gen Web with Jeff Murphy; decided that people do research by counties so he set up a site in KY by county known as the KY GenWeb in March/April 1996

• by June 96 all counties were set up and communicating by email

• then they drew people in around the U.S. who liked the idea

• it grew rapidly and was originally called the GenWeb Project but the official name is USGenWeb

• their idea was to enable people to go to each county for their resource aids

3. Goals and Objectives

• there are over 3500 counties and a page for every one plus a state page

• each county page shall have a query page

• also wanted to come up with some archive pages for people to access raw data

4. How Its Organized

• currently every state and county has a coordinator - over 3500 - includes county, state, city, DC , and Indian territories

• some coordinators have helpers who do lookups - a very large project

• some have less than one such as a coordinator for 10 counties

• county coordinator is who decides how much work is put in

• VA, NY, MO, and GA seem to be the most busy with hits

5. USGenWeb Special Projects

The USGenWeb Project was to be organized by state and county, with volunteers coordinating efforts

to collect genealogy data for their selected counties or states. However, much genealogy data cannot

be limited to a single county, or even a single state. So, USGenWeb started branching out and some

more specialized "projects" were created to collect and disseminate data that goes beyond

county and state lines.

• The USGW Digital Map Library - The United States Digital Map Library is a new project currently

being developed by USGenWeb Archives. Their goal is to make available to genealogists, useful,

readable, high quality maps. Here you will find both archival maps and newly made maps based

on scholarly research. This project and all of its strictly volunteer staff are dedicated to free, online

access for the general public.

• The Pension Project - The USGenWeb Archives Pension Project endeavors to provide actual

transcriptions of Pensions and related materials for all Wars prior to 1900. Transcripts, extracts

and abstracts will be accepted and files and will be placed in the USGenWeb Archives directory of

the State and County of principal residence of the Pensioner.

• Online Census Images Project • Marriage Records Project • Archives Newsletter

• Obituary Project - The USGenWeb Archives Obituary Project was developed in April 2000.

Newspapers have given permission to archive published obituaries to help researchers.

RootsWeb has provided free access to the USGenWeb Archives since 1996.

• Special Collections Project - As the USGenWeb Archives grew, it was apparent not all submitted

data fell into the standard state/county category, but covered multiple counties or states. The

USGenWeb Archives Special Collections Project was developed in January 2000 to cover this

special data. Special Collections also provides an entry page to scanned out-of-print books on

family studies, historical books and various journals permanently stored in the USGenWeb

Archives for free access. These books will be scanned and placed online.

What is the WorldGenWeb?

• The WorldGenWeb is a non-profit volunteer organization that is dedicatedto the free use and access of public domain genealogical information. Tofurther this goal, the WorldGenWeb uses Internet websites to create"local repositories" of information that researchers worldwide canaccess. Each project website (generally) will contain local resourceaddresses of county/country public records offices, cemeterylocations, maps, library addresses, archive addresses, andassociation addresses including Family History Centers or othergenealogical or historical societies, and some history and culture ofthe region. Other resources include query pages or message boards, maillists, historical data including census records, cemetery records, biographies, bibliographies, and family/surname registration websites

Project Organization

• The WorldGenWeb Project is divided into 11 World Regions. Eachregion is divided up by countries and each country is divided into individualprovinces, states, or counties (terms vary depending on administrativedivisions).
