Ranson. Later, Griffith becameacquainted with the notedBelgian artist Theo vanRysselberghe (see lot 1815) andthe French Post-ImpressionistPaul Signac (see lot 1798). Uponhis return to London, Griffithstudied under Walter Sickert atRowlandson House in London aspart of the `Fitzroy Street Group`and lived on the same street for awhile. During the War, Griffithserved with the LancashireFusiliers in France and Gallipolibut was captured as a prisoner ofwar. After beingdecommissioned, he marriedLucie Henriette Richard in 1921and they had one daughter,Rachel (1922-2012). In the mid-1920's, Griffith lived at Agay inFrance where he perfected hisFrench and adopted manyContinental techniques andcompositions in his art. Griffith'sfriend and fellow artist HubertWellington admired Griffith forpresenting `an English outlookthrough a French technique` andthis bi-cultural approach won himsome plaudits at numerousexhibitions in London in the late1920's and 1930's (including TheLondon Group, The GoupilGallery, The Beaux Arts Galleryand Roger Fry's 1921 `NamelessShow` but there was just oneexhibit at The Royal Academy in1933). The family then returnedonce more to England to live inCambridgeshire and Wiltshirebefore settling in Evershot nearDorchester from 1954. His wifedied suddenly the following yearbut Griffith remained in Dorsetbefore moving to be with hisdaughter in Cambridgeshire forhis final years. Griffith died inNewmarket, aged 89. Anexhibition of the artist's work washeld at the Dorset CountyMuseum in Dorchester and atSouthampton City Art Galleryfrom January-March 1996. In1990, the latter purchasedGriffith's portrait of fellow Sickertacolyte Nina Hamnett for theircollection. Some of the exhibitedworks are in this auction and acopy of that catalogue will begiven to every buyer of a work byFrank Griffith in this auction. Griffith's temperament, describedas `shy, rather gentle [and]diffident' complemented hisprofessional standards ofhonesty and integrity. An art critic

at the Morning Post in 1936observed that Griffith had`escaped the tyranny of any oneman or movement` and he stillremains an artist who is hard tocategorise. Praised during hislifetime for his `solid tonal quality,`luminosity and atmosphericquality` and his `mastery overtone relation` that `yielded anincreased sense of light`, somecommentators judged Griffith'sobservational skills to be `broadrather than subtle or penetrating`and one condemned a perceived`facile method` in his technique.Undoubtedly, Griffith's versatilityof method and subject matter hasleft us with an interestingopportunity to assess afresh anartist whose career spannedeight decades and melded someof the best facets of French andBritish art at the time. All the oilshave been guaranteed by theartist's daughter and many bearthe `atelier` stamp of authenticity(see image). All lots are offeredfor sale without reserve.Estimate: £150.00 - £250.00
