DESCRIPTION

Here are a few performance truths that I’ve already heard this Games, that apply equally to business and life as they do to elite sport.

Sport is a microcosm of life.  No doubt about  it!   It’s all

there at  the Commonwealth Games.  The highs and the

lows.   The  effort  and  the  reward.   The  success  and  the

failure.  And it’s all neatly played out on the screen right

before your very eyes.

So when I hear those sporting truisms coming

from those high performance athletes in  the

pressure  cooker  of  elite  competition,  I  pay

attention,  because  I  know  there  is  truth  in what

they are saying.

Here are a few performance truths that  I’ve  already

heard this Games, that apply equally to business and life

as they do to elite sport.

“I just focus on the process and not worry about the

outcome.”  My number one all time  favorite!  You can’t

control what is going to happen in the future – whether

it’s  in  30  seconds  or  3  years.   You  can  plan  and  hope

about  the  future,  but  the  real  action  takes  place  right

NOW!  When you get focused on the here and now – the

process  –  then  the  outcome  pretty much  takes  care  of

itself.

“I’d love another PB.”   It’s  empowering  to  try  to  beat

yourself.   It’s  a  beautiful  challenge  –  there  is  nothing

more pure.  Fear and striving cease when you only have

to  beat  yourself.   Focus  intensifies.   Performances  lift.

Records fall.  Self-confidence soars.  This is a great lesson

to teach your kids!!

“I’m just taking it one game at a time.”  Why waste your

precious psychological resources thinking about a future

“what if” scenarios.  When you have the courage to stay

in the moment, away from that future focus, you can be

the  best  that  you  can  be  –  which  means  you  have

nothing more to give.  This is exactly how you want to be

at then end of any game!
