After the rice is thrown and the wedding cake is boxed up, the one part of the wed-ding ceremony that will continue to last is the wedding bands.

A person is going to wear a wedding band for the rest of his or her life, said Charles Sheridan, owner of Sheridan’s Fine Jewelry at 6 Main St. in Cortland.

“I think putting some thought into the wedding ring is a good idea,” he said.

There are all types of rings available for all types of people.

“Everybody’s a little bit different,” said Sheridan, who has been in business for 40 years. “There’s just dozens and dozens of styles.”

METALSGold rings come in 10-karat, 14-karat

or 18-karat, with 18-karat containing the highest percentage of gold.

They can also be white, yellow or rose colored.

“Three out of four rings that I sell are white gold,” said David Huffman, owner of David L. Huffman Fine Jewelry at 26 Main St., Cortland.

It doesn’t pay to spring for an 18-karat white gold ring as it will have less of the metals that make it appear white mixed in, said Huffman.

“Therefore, it doesn’t make it as white, but it costs more,” he said.

Rose gold is beautiful, with an almost copper appearance, but is not as popular, said Huffman, who has worked as a jeweler for 40 years.

“There are also two-tone mountings that have yellow and white gold in them,” he said.
