Pastor Bob’s Letter to the Family is on hiatus this week but will return in next week’s newsletter.

Aloha! My family and I spent six days of our vacation this year on the Big Island of Hawaii. While taking in the beauty of Hawaii, from the trop-ics to the active volcano, we spent a fair amount of time teasing one another about how inept we were at pronouncing many of the street or community names around us—Ho‘olaule‘a, Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Park… you get my point. If one listens to the residents of Hawaii speak of places and names, the language is beautiful. To listen to me speak these same names, it is clear that I have no idea what I am talking about! It is humbling…

Several years ago I learned of a ritual that has its origins in the Hawaiian Islands, and is common among many other cultures of Pacific Islanders. It is called Ho’oponopono and it is the rite of reconciliation, forgive-ness and harmony. This understanding makes a con-nection between physical illness and our relationships with other people in our lives. “If you are angry for 2 or 3 days, sickness will come.” (Claire Parsons, Healing Practices in the South Pacific.) And one’s inability to let go of resentments or anger, and the proclivity to hold onto grudges may, literally, be the death of you.

The rite of Ho’oponopono is simple: recognize a problem, examine it and come to an understanding of how each person is responsible for their own portion of the brokenness, ask for forgiveness/reconcile and give thanksgiving for being able to release the tensions, an-ger or resentments that have built up. Usually, that last part is done in the context of a shared meal or ceremo-nial feast. The power in this comes from the ability to

forgive and to love, and it is always practiced in community.

A modern description of Ho’oponopono puts the whole thing into a 4-step process. (We are usually look-ing for ways of synthesizing things that need attention and commitment!) The steps are:

1. Repentance—I’m sorry.2. Ask forgiveness—Please forgive me.3. Gratitude—Thank you.4. Love—I love you.This seems like such a universal need, no matter

what language we speak or what culture we live in, our human relationships are so easily stressed and fractured. And so much in our modern living stresses the need to compete, to place ourselves above others, to “look out for number one,” and to be a winner! If there are win-ners in life, it means, in our common understanding, that there must also be losers.

The Good News of our faith in Jesus Christ is the clear message of Ho’oponopono; the most important thing for our well-being, for our living and relating, is reconciliation and grace. The Apostle Paul wrote, All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:18) As the church, we share this recon-ciliation and celebrate it with a great feast each time we gather in Jesus’ name.

Welcome to the table.

Aloha! And Ho’oponopono,Pastor Louise

FCCNH Blood driveWednesday—June 8th

1:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Social HallYou don’t need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason.

• Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend. • Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood someday. • Some believe it is the right thing we do. Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. And you’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped change a life.

In the mid-19th century, seekers traversed the Middle East in search of biblical treasure. They did not seek the location of the Ark or the Holy Grail, in-stead, they sought ancient documents that attested to the words found in Holy Scripture. What they found will forever change how we read the Bible. During the Monday Night Bible Study on June 13th and 20th, we will watch the Smithsonian Channel’s two-part series Bible Hunters that details their journeys. Join us, as we learn how these treasure hunters’ discoveries influence our lives today.

On Sunday morning, I got to spend some time in the Kindergarten and 1st grade Sunday School class. The kids are in summer mode and were extra active and energetic. They all had very important things to say and share with the class. They were especially interested in how to see God. They wanted to know how we know God is here. I told them a story about an encounter that I had with God last week. I told them that I’d only had a small handful of incidents like this in my life.

I was having a rough week last week and as I was driving, I took a few minutes to talk out loud to God. That’s what I do, I don’t have to be alone with my eyes closed, I just talk right out loud to him in my car. Well, as soon as I finished talking to him and finished asking him for strength, I felt a hand on my right hand. I knew right then that everything would be fine and that God has me right in his hand.

The kids in class loved the story, but one little boy asked me an interesting question. He asked “was that in the morning or at night?” I told him that it was in the middle of the day. Even though I hadn’t told him I was scared, he asked, “why did you get scared in the middle of the day? I only get scared in the morning or at night.” Which led our conversation in a whole different direc-tion. But, we concluded with the fact that everyone gets scared, adults and kids, and it can happen at any time of the day or night. And even though we can’t see God himself, we can see him and sometimes even feel him all around us. So, if you need an extra boost, don’t forget to go ahead and talk to God, no matter where you are… he is always there to listen.

Christi Anderson, Director of Children’s Ministries

I Greet you in the Wonderful Magnificent name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Last Sunday was the fifth Sunday of the month, which meant our youth served as the Diaconate. It is always a joy to see our young people participating in worship. It is through their active service that they can become more mindful of the importance of the table to their faith, aware of their responsibility for stewardship to support the ministries of the church and grow to ap-preciate how the warmth and hospitality of a friendly usher can welcome others to the church.

FCCNH youth also hosted the Meet and Greet after church. My thanks to those who provided baked items, helped to set-up the hospitality area and to those who stepped up and filled unexpected gaps. This was my second Meet and Greet as youth director thus I very much appreciated the “know how” and support of our youth who stepped up and helped to familiarize me with the process.

Well-done FCCNH youth.

Blessings unto you, Jeremy Gillett
