LADY KATS
BASKETBALL in tonight’s
IHSAA
SECTIONAL
Bring home the title!
Kokomo plays Lafayette Jeff tonight at the Berry Bowl in Logansport in the 2020 IHSAA Girls
Basketball Sectional.
The Lady Kats downed the Bronchos 66-50 at Memorial Gym on December 4th.
Both the Lady Kats and the Lady Bronchos have four wins this season. Kokomo’s victories are
over Manual, Jeff, Arsenal Tech, and Muncie Central, while Jeff’s triumphs are against South
Dearborn, Arsenal Tech, Twin Lakes, and Logansport.
The Wildkats have lost 18 times this season, and Jefferson has been on the short end of 19
games.
Lafayette Jeff comes into this game having lost their last nine games and 16 of their last 17.
Kokomo comes into the sectional on a winning note, having defeated Muncie Central 49-48 in
their last regular season game of the year. The Lady Kats have won two of their last four games.
The Lady Bronchos are 2-13 against Class 4A schools this year, 2-5 against 3A teams, and 0-1
against Class 2A.
The Lady Kats are 3-10 against 4A schools, 1-4 against 3A, 0-3 against 2A teams, and 0-1
against teams in Class A.
The Sagarin Ratings have Lafayette Jeff as the 257th best team in Indiana and the 88th best
among the 101 teams in Class 4A. Kokomo ranks as the 283rd best in the state and the 90th best
in the class.
The Sagarins have Jeff’s schedule as the 77th hardest in the state, and Kokomo’s schedule is the
143rd.
Kokomo’s opponents have a 244-250 overall record, while Lafayette’s foes were 306-224.
Andy Baker is the head coach of the Lady Bronchos. Now in his seventh season, he has a 70-97
record at Jeff. Baker, who took over the program from Geoff Salmon in 2013-14, is 349-218 in
his 22 seasons as a head coach, which includes time at Cypress Lake in Florida prior to his girls
experience at Jeff. Baker is 4-5 in games against Kokomo and and 1-0 against Kokomo in
sectional play, defeating the Lady Kats 70-48 at the Berry Bowl on February 2, 2018.
John Harrell’s website predicts a 51-47 Jefferson win.
Tonight’s game between Kokomo and Lafayette Jeff will be the 52nd meeting between the two
schools in girls basketball.
Kokomo holds a 33-18 advantage in the series.
The Lady Kats victory back on December 4th broke a string of four straight wins for Jefferson in
the series.
Tonight’s matchup will be the eighth time the two schools have met in IHSAA tournament play.
Kokomo holds a 6-1 advantage in tournament games. The Lady Kats won the first six meetings
before Jeff beat the Wildkats 70-48 two years ago.
The series started with a Lafayette Jeff win (58-45) in the 1978-79 season. Kokomo didn’t win
a game with the Bronchos until the 1981-82 season (56-52). The two schools have played at
least one game against each other for the last 39 years.
Kokomo finished sixth in the North Central Conference with a 3-6 mark, while Jeff was tied for
eighth with a 2-7 record.
The Lady Kats had the lowest scoring average in the NCC at 38.4 points per game. Jeff was
eighth in scoring at 42.1.
The Lady Bronchos gave up 61.7 points per game. Only Tech in the NCC allowed more at 62.1.
Both teams are careless with the basketball at times as Kokomo averages 22.4 turnovers per
game to 19.5 errors per game for the Bronchos.
Jeff was the poorest rebounding team in the league this season, grabbing 24.4 boards per game.
Kokomo and Jeff ranked 7th and 8th, respectively, in field goal percentage, hitting 33% and 31%.
The Lady Kats shot 60.7% from the free throw line, second best in the NCC, but the Wildkats
only shot 262 times from the charity stripe, second lowest in the league.
The Lady Bronchos have two players averaging in double figures. Sanaa Cartledge leads the
way with 14.6 points per game, while Ashlyn McTaggert scores 12.6. Cartledge is sixth in the
league in scoring, just ahead of Kokomo’s Chloe McClain and her 14.4 average.
Sanaa Cartledge has shot the fourth most free throws in the league, but hits just 55% of them.
Amaya Milian averages a team best 2.7 assists per game, while Sanaa Cartledge leads the team
in steals (3.6) and turnovers (4.9).

GIRLS BASKETBALL
December 4, 2019
Kokomo earned their first North Central Conference victory of the season with a
66-50 win over Lafayette Jeff at Memorial Gym.
The Lady Kats used some good shooting in the middle two quarters to propel them
to the victory. Coach Tod Windlan’s crew outscored the Jeff girls 44-20 combined
in the second and third periods.
The Kats took the lead for good midway through the second quarter on a layup by
Natalija Garevska which gave Kokomo a 20-18 advantage. The Wildkats outscored
the Bronchos 8-1 over the last part of the period to lead by nine (28-19) at
intermission.
Leading 42-31 with 2:27 left in the third quarter, the Kats ran off 11 straight points
to lead by 22 before starting the final quarter.
Chloe McClain was the scoring leader with 29 points and seven rebounds.
Garevska added 19 points and five rebounds, and Sanighia Balantine had 12 points
and eight rebounds.
Sanaa Cartledge had 19 points for the Lady Bronchos. She made 7-of-11 from the
