In my now 80 years, I have witnessed the impact of the collective passion and commitment of both my own family and our extended family of craftsmen.
It is craftsmanship that birthed our company, and it is craftsmanship that continues to nourish it. We are a hands-on company; this is what makes our product look and feel alive, and I am very proud of what we have all accomplished together.
It is therefore in honor of the many hands that have touched our hearts that I wish to acknowledge:
• the hands of our craftsmen who manage to walk the tightrope daily between man and machine, planning both precision and spontaneity into our process
• the hands of our customers, whose ever-appreciative touch has allowed us to thrive and survive as a company of hard-working American makers
• the hands of my sons, Matthew, Andrew, Aaron and David, whose vast and varied contributions to a single family vision have provided years of excitement and achievement beyond my wildest dreams
• the hands of my wife Mary, whose fingerprints are all over the soul of our company and the success of my own family in her loving efforts as a mother, and importantly, as a life-long partner to me. Without her, there would simply be no Moser story.
I look forward to encouraging and supporting the growth of Thos. Moser as we continue to welcome into our future talented designers, such as our own Adam Rogers, emerging collaborators, and finally the singularly skilled makers that revere craft as we do. Their contribution, as you will see throughout these pages, has just begun to influence the many chapters of our story yet to be written.

The above list of acknowledgements comprises, in large part, internal members of the Thos. Moser family. We are hands-on in every area of our business, and this catalog is testament to the multiple roles we embrace as a team in support of craft. It is with gratitude and in partnership, however, that we include several outside assistants on this list. Their contribution has made us complete.

Selection happens as a function of purpose. Since success at Thos. Moser begins in the forests from which we carefully harvest our wood, we have worked long and hard to cultivate the right relationships with the mills that supply us. These valued partners understand who we are, the values we stand for regarding that precious resource, and the aspirations we hold for the beauty and the life of our furniture. We are very selective about the material choices we make, and together with our partners, are ever mindful of the land, the soil and its future beyond our own.
At Thos. Moser, we take a long view of the life of our furniture. We know what endures, and our joy is in the selection of the wood, whether cherry, walnut, ash or maple, and its elevation through craftsmanship. Just like the choicest grapes make the finest wines, the quality of our furniture depends upon the exacting selection of those pieces of wood. The value of that selection process is then realized by our customers through the joinery of those pieces; pieces that are so well conceived they can span generations, age gracefully and
powerfully, and have a glowing patina of memory from one family to the next. Our furniture is collectible and cherishable, and we delight in knowing that like the trees it came from, our furniture can take root in a family and live many lives. Permanence, to us, is indeed the worth and value of our material resource.
Think of the story a tree’s growth rings tell of its 150 odd years. Ours then is to think 150 years ahead, and wonder what a piece of our furniture will see?

MOSER RETURNS TO WASHINGTONSince our departure several years ago from Washington, DC, we have continued to hear from our customers, both with words of praise for our furniture, and frankly, wonderment at our decision. It may have been a misstep, however, in the words of a well-loved country song, How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away. Thankfully, our Moser faithfuls did not give up on us, and just so you know, we missed you too.
So here we are, back in Georgetown on 33rd and M Street, where you will see our icons, our customer favorites and our newest designs, in a very new light. What has not changed is our reverence for the beauty and life of the wood we choose, and the pride and respect for our privileged artisans. Our furniture is, as always, made by hand, in America; one piece, one craftsman. We look forward to welcoming you, once again.

TOM TURNS 80Forty three years ago, my wife Mary and I produced our first catalog, the introduction of which is on the opposite page. It came on the heels of a life-altering decision to walk away from a ten-year career as a college professor, tenure and all, and with four little boys in tow, begin my life making things in wood. Mary and I never looked back.
I was inspired by the traditional joinery and clean, unadorned lines of Shaker furniture then, and to this day, I still am. The pieces on the next page are my final homage to a lifetime of admiration. I am fortunate to have worked and lived long enough to realize the truth of my favorite Shaker dictum. It has guided my work since the first day:
“Build an object as though it were to last a thousand years and as if one were to die tomorrow.”

Since 2007, our Customer in Residence (CIR) program has welcomed hundreds of customers, from across the country and around the world, to our Auburn, Maine workshop. During the week-long CIR program, our master cabinetmakers guide each participant through every step in the production of their very own Thos. Moser heirloom — from raw material selection to the finishing process. If you — or someone you know — shares our passion for fine woodworking, the CIR program offers a unique opportunity to learn the intricacies of traditional joinery, the satisfaction of shaping fine hardwood, even the discriminating process of applying natural finishes to achieve the perfect luster. You’ll have the opportunity to interact closely with the Moser team and with fellow attendees, sharing experiences during daily meetings and at two special group dinners during your visit.
Participants stay at the historic Harraseeket Inn in Freeport with ample free time to explore Freeport and surrounding areas.

Shown at NeoCon in June 2014, the Pacific Chair was awarded the Metropolis magazine design award, #METROPOLIS LIKES, and has since been recognized by Design Journal and Archinterious as one of the best products of 2014. Originally designed as a custom reading chair for the Seattle Public Library system, the Pacific Chair represents the abilities of Moser Contract to collaborate effectively with clients to ensure both an elegant and functional solution, while remaining ever committed to the tenets of Thos. Moser.
PACIFIC CHAIR
From the steps of the White House on the occasion of the first papal visit to Washington, DC to the George Bush Library in Texas, to our valued and on-going relationship with Penn Medicine, the projects at Moser Contract have been many and varied. Admittedly, one of the most emotional moments for us all here in Auburn was a visit from the girls at St. Timothy’s School near Baltimore, Maryland. Since having been introduced for the first time some years ago at the National Association of Independent Schools, Moser Contract has worked quite closely with St. Tim’s on a
variety of engaging projects. This past summer, however, was a highlight in our long experience of collaborating, and it occurred on our own shop floor here in Auburn, Maine with smart, impressionable, and impressive students. We had the privilege of hosting a group of the graduating girls not only to work with us on finishing pieces for their school, but importantly, to share with them our philosophy of permanence and the importance of marrying design and materials to build beautiful things for lasting value. Their interest and enthusiasm was truly unforgettable.

A VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE”Over some 40 years, Thos. Moser has proven itself a leader when it comes to fine American craftsmanship; a leadership dedicated to simplicity, integrity in construction, and a love and respect for natural materials. This vision has remained constant throughout these many years. Today, with so many designers striving to protect original design, we’ve seen a resurgence of companies attempting to emulate the company and lifestyle Tom Moser created 43 years ago. The story of Thos. Moser in the greater context of handmade American furniture is without parallel, and its contribution to that history establishes it, in my view, as America’s first family of handmade furniture makers.”

FACES OF CRAFT
In 1972, Tom Moser committed his life to craft. His mission was to restore the lost art of woodworking while establishing a community that would allow craftsmen to make a living doing the work they loved. This remains our mission today. The evidence of craftsmanship, or the mark of each maker, tells the story of each piece with an emphasis on the construction of the object itself, and how it works. Each is made with skill and precision, and reveals not only how it was created but also why it will last a lifetime.
As natural material, the beauty of wood is unparalleled. Regardless of the species, the resource we are given and the responsibility that comes with its application is taken seriously. Wood not only serves our practical needs on the shop floor, but more importantly, is a partner in the creation of a beautiful object. Our commitment is to respect its natural properties and to celebrate its inherent beauty.
Just as the Shakers accomplished function with the most efficient solution, we aim to simplify each piece, stripping it to its required elements alone. The opportunity for elevating the modest furniture forms comes through the attention to the relationship of one of these spared parts to another. Committed to our characteristic elimination of ornament, we believe the strength of simplicity is vital to the success of the piece. Design is simply the function of assigning form to these ideals and establishing the framework for the continuation and evolution of the tradition of woodworking, while creating a platform for craft. Craft then can be defined as 'doing something well for its own sake'. Craft is a commitment. Craft is a state of mind. Craft is a lifestyle.
The men and women who make our furniture, collectively referred to as craftsmen, subscribe to a lifestyle dedicated to excellence in all they do, for the benefit of what they do. Each decision made while making a piece of furniture is done so in the interest of the quality of the object. The individual signature on each piece of Thos. Moser furniture represents and upholds this commitment.
