Principal’s Message — Ganton Gazette
With 2016 wrapping up I figured that I would be a good time to highlight and thank some of the outstanding people at and in the TJSHS community.
First, Mrs. Elliasson and Mrs. McLeod the first two people that you would see if you walked into the school, they work tirelessly in the front office. Truthfully the school would likely fall apart without them, from coding absences, to grabbing printing for the students, and keeping my ego in check. Thank you for all that you do.
Mrs. Van Steenis. Thanks for putting in the extra hours to make sure that your students are engaged in class and for making our work experience program such a success in the last year and a half.
Mr. Van Horn, thanks for all the little things that you do around the school. From coaching basketball, being the graduate staff advisor, to putting in those extra hours at lunch with students that need help.
Mrs. Sauer, thank you for engaging students in social studies from grade 7-11. You have worked hard to develop an excellent art program in the past year and a half. Also thank you for helping to coach both basketball and volleyball.
Mr. Proc, thanks for helping get the Industrial Arts lab back on track. The projects that the students have been walking out with have been fantastic. As well, thank you for volunteering your time to coach the grade 9 girls volleyball team.
Ms. Ormberg, thank you for the time and effort you put into the counseling efforts, case reviews, and conflict mediation. The students at TJSHS have really benefited from your increased efforts and time spent on both career and personal counselling.
Mr. Morrisseau, thanks for all your working keeping our band running at such a high stand-ard. You are doing a great job connecting with the students and arranging music to make sure that even in a band of 2 you are developing their talents.
Ms. Gramlich, thank you for your effort in helping to get a fully operational cosmetology stu-dio at TJSHS. I look forward to seeing great things come out of that room. You have also helped immensely with completing so much online marking allowing our students to take a multitude of interest courses.
Mr. Feil, thanks for starting the process of re-developing our athletics programs. Your hard work coaching volleyball, basketball and track and field is appreciated by the students who you give an opportunity to develop into student athletes.
Mrs. Engler, thank you for all the effort you give the school while only being on a 0.3 con-tract. From coaching volleyball, organizing the ski-club dates, starting a Jr. High drama program and helping by substitute teaching on short notice your efforts are appreciated.
Mr. Dykstra, thanks for making sure that the school doesn’t fall apart when I am gone. You always seem to get the ‘interesting’ days at school and handle them expertly. Your student fo-cussed approach to learning I am sure is appreciated by the students at TJSHS.

Principal’s Message Continued— Ganton Gazette
Ms. Leeder and Mrs. Verhun, thank you for all the work that you do with our students on a daily basis, as our EAs you wear many hats through a school day and you both, with your own ap-proaches, do a fantastic job.
Mrs. Raugust, thanks for the hard work you have put into making the library a welcoming and caring environment. It is a destination for many students each and everyday that you are here. Also thank you for putting together the newsletter, putting together pieces for the Target and updating the website to keep our community informed.
Mrs. Pilon and Mrs. Dutton, thank you for all your work behind the scenes making sure that the school is clean and maintained. Also thank you for helping to keep the breakfast program run-ning on a daily basis.
To our PTA (Mrs. Stern, Mrs. Chung, Mrs. Mudry, Mrs. Knopp) thank you for all the time and effort you put into the school and activities even though you are all very busy ladies.
To our parent volunteers that help drive our sports teams, band programs, field trips etc. Thank you from the school.
Parents, thank you for choosing to send your children to TJSHS. Thank you for your con-tinued support on our journey at TJSHS.
Finally, to our students, thank you for being some of the best in all of Alberta you are the reason our 18 staff members and countless parent volunteers put forth their very best effort each and every day.
As we end 2016, I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday season and here is a shame-less plug of my children.

Staff vs Students Hockey Game
The stands were full of excited fans at the first ever Staff vs Students Hockey Game on
Friday, December 9. Students from Grades 7-12 competed against a motley crew of staff
members. Festivities began with the singing of O Canada by Emma Kavanagh and An-
na Lysgaard.
It was a high paced game with only 2 penalties given out by refs Brody M and Kale P.
to Mr. Van Horn and Mr. Mitchell. Students dominated the game with goals from
Tucker S, Kolter P, Andrew, Ryan C. Hayden and Kolby. Staff were able to keep up
with goals from Mr. Feil, Mr. Dykstra, Mr. Pawlick, Mrs. Waters and Mr. Mitchell. At the end
of the third period the score was 7-7. A shoot out ensued and Mr. Mitchell scored the win-
ning goal.
Thanks to Mr. Feil for organizing the game. Also a huge thank you to all of the members of
the staff team which was accompanied by members of the community. Thanks as well to the
people who came to watch the game. We hope it will become a yearly event.

Guidance Counsellor Reports-Miss Ormberg
On November 18-19, I attended the Guidance Counsellor Conference in Canmore. The fol-
lowing information is from a keynote presentation entitled, “Video Game and Internet Addic-
tion in Youth”.
60% of adults and 90% of youth play a video game everyday, and there are some benefits!
Playing video games helps kids stay in touch with friends, increases coordination, allows kids
to safely explore who they are and can improve skill development. However, the developing
brains of children are vulnerable to addiction; therefore, leisure time needs to be monitored.
Faming addictions can lead to decay in attention, memory and the ability to speak face to face
with others. Electronics occupy 55% of young peoples’ lives, and tend to increase heart rate
and blood pressure and lower the metabolism if played before bed.
We need to educate our young people to make informed choices around video game use.
Video game manufacturers are smart and use many tricks to keep young people interested.
These tricks include:
Grinding: keeping you playing when it’s not even fun by introducing meaningless tasks.
Virtual Money-allows you to live like the rich 1%
Reward Scale:- the longer you play, the further apart the rewards are
Save Points– commitments to raids, etc
Avoidance of Punishment-penalties for not playing enough
These tricks are powerful, but tend not to work unless the child is already dissatisfied at home
or at school. The good news is that addiction is rare– about 8%-20% of youth are addicted to
video games. Addiction is the inability to stop playing a game even though it is negatively af-
fecting every day life. Social isolation is a huge factor in video game addiction, and face to
face socialization is a key factor in proper childhood development, and electronics can be
problematic for this.
1 in 25 parents don’t know what their kids are playing. There are many violent and aggressive
games out there which should be monitored. It is valid to note that games don’t make kids vio-
lent, but “trash talk” can be a violence indicator. It’s important to remember that children are
imitators, and early exposure can lead to lack of empathy and aggression later on.
Video games should not be banned to children, but they should be regulated. Experts report
that 2 hours a day is a safe average to play games before major problems occur.
