Good Mawnin Thoresby!

Leaping from the hot paths of the Great british summer, we dive into a refreshing season of engaging performance, new partnerships, food and craft events and a fabulous programme of exhibitions to visit and get involved in.

shop aT ThoresbyForget the high street and plan a visit to Thoresby, where you can visit the indepen-dent shops and talk directly to makers and retailers (most shops open from 10.30 -5). have a piece of jewellery or glass made especially for you; choose from a range of boutique shops including toys, plants and ladies wear and much, much more. no need to rush off to check your parking ticket, parking is free! so relax and spend time; visit the Military Museum, Thoresby Gallery, have tea and cake or a meal at the bay Tree bistro. Then, stroll on the park and watch the world go by……let’s slow down a bit, if only for a day.

The phoToGrapher, The docTor and The arT hisTorian!

Far from a joke! Thoresby is energised by the arrival of ben harriott as our artist in residence, bringing his new exhibition ‘Good Mawnin’ to Thoresby in november – not to be missed!

with excitement, we welcome dr ben bedwell and dr Gaby neher from the Uni-versity of nottingham. ben will be conduct-ing a digital heritage research project called ‘wander Thoresby’ and dr neher from the department of art history will be working closely with Thoresby Gallery and the pierrepont collection.

countess Manvers was passionate about Thoresby, her family home from the 1940s onwards and repeatedly painted favourite scenes and views of the estate.Thoresby hall and estate occupy a unique place in the rich heritage of the region, and this exhibition showcases some of countess Manvers’ paintings that depict the estate, and offers its visitors the opportunity to follow in the countess’s footsteps to explore the grounds that inspired her. in a new orienteer-ing/geocaching trail visitors can experience the scenes and views for themselves. The exhibition has been created as part of the research project, ‘wander Thoresby’ in which, the stonebridge Trust and University of nottingham are exploring new ways to reveal the heritage of Thoresby through new technologies. curious visitors will be able to find out just how Thoresby is helping to play a vital role in developing cutting edge mobile experiences, while the more adventurous can wander out onto the estate and participate in the research for themselves.

in partnership with orchestras Live, Thoresby welcomes a unique opportunity to experi-ence great british chamber orchestras in the wonderful setting of Thoresby riding hall. This atmospheric concert features music from over three centuries, from the rich pastoral imagery of vaughan williams’s oboe con-certo to the dancing, folk song melodies of holst’s st paul’s suite. The concert ends with an early masterpiece by britten. his simple symphony, based on music he wrote be-tween the ages of nine and twelve contains some of his most sparkling and witty music.

ben harriott’s photographs explore the chasm of his personal family identity span-ning british and Jamaican cultures. he brings innovative methods to each photograph, using traditional studio lighting techniques in the open air.

after the loss of both his parents ben made a spontaneous trip to his father’s village in Jamaica. This exhibition is a result of that experience. Meet ben’s Jamaican relatives in these visceral images.

“My most treasured possession is a montage of family snapshots made by my mother. This montage was a trigger for my trip and its power continues to inspire me”.
