PRAY FOR YOUR CHILDREN
Rob Robinson
We know how the Lord regarded Job to be a right-eous man, and how Job remained steadfast in his faith, though the Lord allowed Satan to test him se-verely. But one of the qualities of Job that God es-pecially admired was that he prayed for his chil-
dren. He had seven sons and three daughters. “Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, ‘It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.’ Thus Job did continually.”
We who are Christian parents should be just as diligent as Job to pray for our children. Let us pray for their health, their safety and their success in everything they undertake. Even more than that, let us pray, as Job did, for our children’s spiritual wel-fare. Following is the text of Paul’s account about how he prayed regularly for those whom he had led to Christ. It has been modified to make it a helpful example of prayer for our children. (Job 1:5, Colossians 1:9-14)
“My Father in Heaven, I pray for my children that ________ may be filled with the knowledge of your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that she/he might walk in a manner worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ, fully pleasing to him. It is my prayer that _______ would bear fruit in every good work and in-crease in the knowledge of God. May ________ be strengthened with all power, according to your glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. I pray that ________ will always give thanks to you, his/her Heavenly Father, and that you would qualify him/her to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. I plead for you to grant ________ deliverance from the domain of darkness and transfer her/him to the kingdom of your beloved Son, in whom ________ will have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.”
LOVE IS KIND AND IS NOT JEALOUS
Letson McCoy
I don’t remember exactly where I heard the follow-ing phrase, but it is a great way to think about love. Someone once said, “Love is a behavior and not just an emotion. Love is an action.” What a great way to think of love! With this thought in mind, consider Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:4 when he talks about love.
Last week’s article was on patience. Indeed, when we practice patience towards someone else, we are doing a good thing. However, there is more to true godly love. As Christians we must be kind. Solo-mon wrote the following, “Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” Often we are called to be kind even when situations might de-serve a different attitude. Jesus told us to love our enemies and do good to them because He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men (Luke 6:35). Even to our brothers and sisters in Christ we are to have an attitude of kindness because we want to imitate our Father in heaven who is kind to each of us (Colossians 3:12-14). After all, it is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)!
Also, love is not jealous. Genesis 4:1-8 reveals to each of us the devastating results that can happen when jealousy runs its full course. James tells us that disorder and every evil thing will be present where jealousy and selfish ambition exist (James 3:16). We must remember that God gives us all what we need. We can be content knowing that we have a God who will take care of us. Rather than being jealous, we can “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Jealousy can be a struggle, but remember that we can over-come it by renewing our minds day by day and re-lying on God’s help (Romans 12:1-2).
Is there someone you need to be kind to this week? Maybe you did not practice kindness to someone when you should have. Ask for forgiveness and make up your mind to be kinder. Are you jealous of someone else? Don’t continue to let that fester in your life. Root it out and renew your mind day by day in what you have in Christ. When we are kind and not jealous, we will be walking closer to the model that Christ laid out for us, and this should always be our ultimate goal!
