Bolt Torque RatingTo assure correct rubber seal compression, bolts must be tightened in diametrically opposite pairs, similar to the way a motor vehicle wheel is tightened. Bolt up evenly giving the nuts 2 or 3 turns at a time to the prescribed torque rating below:
Galvanized Bolts:M12 - Torque 70-80Nm, use a 19mm Spanner.M14 - Torque 90-100Nm, use a 22mm Spanner.M16 - Torque 100-120Nm, use a 24mm Spanner.
Stainless Steel Grade 316 Bolts (with lubricant):M12 - Torque 65-70Nm, use a 19mm Spanner.M14 - Torque 90-100Nm, use a 22mm Spanner.M16 - Torque 100-120Nm, use a 24mm Spanner.
If an effective seal is not attained, the coupling must be loosened, lubricant must be applied to the rubber seal inside and outside. The coupling must be realigned and re-tightened.
It is good engineering practice to visit the site and re-check the torque rating 24 hours after installation.
NOTE:Stainless Steel bolts must be tightened with a dry film lubricant (Teflon) or wet lubricant (Nickel Slip). If a lubricant is not used the chances are high that the nut will seize on the bolt thread. It will be necessary to cut off the bolt and replace it.

Long Barrel couplings are able to accommodate larger setting gaps.
Pipe End Thrust, Restraint & InstallationInternal pressure forces attempt to separate pipeline components, most notably at tees, bends and blank ends.
NOTE:Couplings are NOT DESIGNED TO RESIST END LOAD due to pressure forces. End thrust restrained must be provided by other means.
When placing thrust blocks and anchoring pipe with concrete, do not encase couplings in concrete. Leave couplings exposed during testing. The manufacturer can not be held liable for excavating leaking couplings.
Additionally, step couplings must be anchored to avoid couplings ‘sliding’ along the pipe. Wide range couplings operating at both extremities of its working tolerance may also ‘slide’ with sufficient internal pipeline pressure. For example, an exposed (not buried) TC300-2 Coupling (315-332mm) that is joining a 315mm PVC pipe to a 332mm OD AC pipe may slide at as little as 10-12 bar. In these conditions the coupling must be restrained. Contact our offices for solutions.

Pipe End PreparationDepending on the application, pipe end preparation should equal the centre sleeve length of the coupling. Long barrel couplings can regularly exhibit barrel lengths in excess of 500mm and therefore it is important to ensure that the prepared end of the pipe is sufficient to enable the installer to slide the entire coupling over the pipe end.
HDPE Pipe Expansion & ContractionAs a rule of thumb an HDPE pipe exhibits 0.2mm of expansion or contraction per meter of pipe length, per degree Celcius change. Therefore a 5m length of pipe wil l shrink 1mm per degree Celcius drop in temperature. Bear in mind that HDPE pipes are often laid in full sunlight where the surface of the pipe can reach 54°C. Ambient buried temperatures can approach 0°C in winter resulting in the possibility that each 5m length of pipe can shrink up to 54mm.
The above example is common in regions with extreme seasonal weather variations, such as the South African Highveld. It is therefore important to ensure the anticipated shrinkage (or expansion) of an HDPE pipe is calculated prior to ordering a Long Barrel Coupling.
oPVC Expansion and ContractionThe expansion of oPVC is quite normal under pressure due to the flexible nature of the material. Care must be taken when connecting oPVC pipe with Mechanical Compression Type couplings to ensure Long Barrel couplings, step couplings and flange adaptors are specified.
GRP Pipe ConnectionTests have shown that GRP pipe exhibits a tendency to de laminate when coupled wi th mechanica l compression couplings on the extremity of the pipe end. A long barrel coupling allows the rubber compression seal to work a sufficient distance back from the end of the GRP pipe ensuring the pipe integrity is maintained. Long Barrel couplings, step couplings and flange adaptors have become the industry standard when connecting GRP pipe to pipeline components of a different material.
Special Long Barrel CouplingsLong Barrel products are available in special lengths and materials such as Stainless Steel Grade 304 & 316.
ApplicationLong Barrel Couplings are designed specifically to cater for:1. HDPE pipe thermal expansion and
contraction2. oPVC linear contraction resulting from radial
expansion of the pipe under pressure3. Prevention of GRP (Glass Reinforced
Polymer) pipe end de-lamination4. To cover extended distances between two
pipe ends of any rigid pipe material.
Long Barrel Couplings exhibit the same performance criteria as Unifit Couplings.Working Pressure = 16 barTest Pressure = 24 bar.
DesignCircumferential weld beads are NOT allowed when supplying Long Barrel coupling products. Two coupling sleeves may not be welded together to create a single long barrel coupling sleeve.
By welding two coupling sleeves together the ability of the coupling to accommodate pipe angular deflection is nullified. Thereby seriously inhibiting the performance of the product. Additionally circumferential weld beads around the center of a coupling sleeve will be put under undue strain when ground settlement occurs, the possibility of catastrophic failure exists.
NOTE:Long Barrel couplings do NOT prevent pipe end pull out. They merely accommodate more pipe movement than a standard barrel product. Pipes must be suitably restrained by alternative means.
When designing a pipeline incorporating Long Barrel products the design engineer should specify that circumferential weld beads are NOT permitted.

ApplicationUnifit Step Couplings are designed to provide transitions between pipes of different nominal bores simplifying installations when replacing old pipe with new pipe, thus making Unifit Step Couplings excellent repair products.
Simple InstallationAvailable as standard and long barrel sleeved versions, Unifit Step Couplings simplify installation further, allowing for greater cutting tolerances and a greater pipe insertion depth - sealing beyond corrosion damaged pipe ends to create a safe and permanent repair.
Accommodating Pipe MovementAll couplings accommodate angularity between pipes which allows for normal pipeline movement due to ground settlement. Unifit step couplings allow for 6° total angular deflection.
DesignIn order to reduce pipeline turbulence through a step coupling it is imperative that the step coupling exhibits a smooth tapered transition. Therefore NO PROFILE PLATES are permitted.
It is also important to ensure that a step coupling center sleeve (or barrel) is of sufficient length to enable simple installation on site. As step couplings are predominantly used for repair and joining of different pipe materials it is often not possible for the contractor to get a precise joint where the pipe ends meet. A longer coupling barrel offers the installer greater flexibility when effecting a repair. Step coupling barrel lengths should be 2 x that specif ied for standard straight coupl ings in BS534:1990.
NOTE:When designing a pipeline incorporating Step Coupling products, the design engineer must clearly specify:
1. Profile plates are NOT permitted in the design and construction of step couplings.2. Step coupling center sleeve length must be 2 x that specified in BS534:1990 for
standard straight couplings.

The forces opposing the thrust load are impossible to calculate accurately due to a vast number of factors influencing the resistance of the step coupling to thrust forces, such as:
- smoothness of the pipe surface and coefficient of friction thereof
- temperature of the pipe surface- amount of lubrication used to install the coupling
and whether this lubrication was used between the rubber seal and pipe outside diameter
- coefficient of friction of the rubber seal - this may also vary due to the shore hardness of the rubber material
- compression load on the coupling rubber seal which is affected by the actual bolt torque
- ground settlement effecting the angular deflection of the pipes within the coupling
- operating pressure of the pipeline- the magnitude of the step across the two
different pipe diameters- water hammer experienced within the pipeline- the density of the substrate used to back fill the
pipeline- most importantly, back filling and compaction of
the ground around the coupling.
As the pipeline pressure increases, and the magnitude of the step increases, so to do the thrust forces attempting to move the step coupling.
If a step coupling is not sufficiently restrained, buried and back filled correctly, there is every possibility that it will move. It is industry standard to keep couplings exposed during the pipeline testing in order to check for leaks. Unfortunately, this is counter productive in the case of step couplings. There is often not sufficient restraint to support the coupling and prevent it from sliding.
Step couplings must be sufficiently restrained to avoid ‘sliding’ along a pipe. A step coupling should be perceived as a partial blanked off end exposed to axial thrust forces. Regardless of the direction of flow, the step coupling will always move off the larger pipe diameter and onto the smaller pipe. It is not always sufficient to simply backfill a step coupling. The magnitude of axial thrust forces may be large enough to shift the coupling and the backfill.
When placing thrust blocks and anchoring pipe with concrete, care must be taken to ensure that a step or any other coupling is not encased in concrete as this prevents access for maintenance and/or repair.
The manufacturer can not be held liable for excavating leaking couplings.

Guideline DimensionsMany factors influence the amount of restraint required to prevent a step coupling sliding. The straps in this document are designed for use on product up to 1600kPa working pressure. Guideline dimensions are given below.
Each Restraining Strap is lined with a 3mm Natural Rubber to ensure maximum grip to the pipe OD. It is good engineering practice to assemble the restraining strap around the pipe using ‘contact adhesive’ in order minimize the chance of creep.
How to Order a Restraining StrapCustomers must provide the smaller pipe outside diameter. An explanation of the code is shown below.

BenefitsUnifit Universal Flange Adaptors exhibit a universal flange drilling enabling the adaptor to be connected to multiple flange drillings. Steel flange adaptors have a single specified flange drilling. For example BS4504 PN16, whereas Universal flange adaptors can accommodate multiple flange drillings including: 10 and 16 bar rated flanges from SANS1123, BS EN1092-1, ISO7005 1:1992 and additional certain BS10:1962 (Table D&E), certain ANSI & AWWA flange drillings.
ApplicationUnifit Universal Flange Adaptors are designed for use on air, water, sewer and gas pipelines. The Universal Adaptor exhibits the same wide sealing tolerance of the Unifit Coupling and can therefore be used to join multiple pipe outside diameters and different pipe materials.
The universal drilling consists of elongated flange holes enabling the adaptor to be bolted to multiple flange drillings.
Pipe Angular DeflectionAll models accommodate angularity between pipes which allows for normal pipeline movement caused by ground settlement. Universal flange adaptors have a total allowable angular deflection of up to 3°.
Easy to InstallThe Unifit Series is supplied pre-assembled. The captivated non-rotating bolt heads require a single spanner to tighten. Request our installation instructions for a smooth and simple installation in even the most challenging conditions.
Performance CharacteristicsThe abi l i ty of a Unif i t Universal Adaptor to accommodate angular deflection, pipe expansion and contraction etc. equals half the documented value for an equivalent sized Unifit Coupling. For example, a TC300-2 coupling can accommodate 6° of pipe angular deflection. The similar sized TUF300-2 Universal Flange Adaptor can accommodate 3° degrees of pipe angular deflection. Similarly setting gaps and pipe end preparation distances are half those specified for Unifit Couplings.

All Unifit Universal Flange Adaptors are Full Through Bore flange adaptors. This means the flange adaptor is not a reducing step flange adaptor, therefore enabling the installer to slide the entire adaptor over the pipe for which it is intended. A reducing step flange adaptor has a smaller flange ID. Therefore the pipe can not pass completely through a reducing step flange adaptor.

ApplicationWhen joining plain ended rigid pipe to either of the following:
1. HDPE Stub & Flange2. Wafer Type Butterfly Valve3. Wafer Type Non-Return Valve
UNIFIT flange adaptors have a wide operating range enabling it to connect to various pipe OD’s. The installer can slide the product over various pipe OD’s within this range. The increased ID of the adaptor flange may present an insufficient sealing face when connecting to wafer type products and HDPE Stub & Flanges.
Additionally, when a product does not offer a full flange face to support the flange adaptor, large bending moments are exerted on the flange adaptor attempting to bend the adaptor flange. It is imperative that a full thickness flange is utilised for this application. Thus eliminating any chance of the reduced thickness flange adaptors flange bending around the stub end or wafer valve, when bolts over tightened.
Therefore, for these types of installations we recommend a Long Barrel, full thickness flange with reduced ID. This ensure a sufficient sealing face for the flange sealing gasket.

Material Specification
InstallationAn End Cap is a blanked off end and is therefore subject to internal pipeline pressure forces. The force on an end cap increases with pipe diameter and internal pipeline pressure. Magnitudes in tens of tons are common and therefore adequate external restraint is mandatory to ensure an end cap remains in place.
Long Barrel End Caps are available and should be specified when being used on HDPE, oPVC and GRP pipe. .Do not encase in concrete
RangeUnifit End Caps are available from PN6 to PN64 and any nominal bore from DN40 - 600mm. Larger sizes up to DN3000mm are available (refer to Large Diameter Products).
ApplicationUnifit End Caps can be used to blank off a pipeline end. They are also perfect for pipeline pressure testing. End Caps can be used, removed and re-installed on the next section of pipeline being tested. Unifit End Caps exhibit a wide sealing tolerance enabling the product to be connected to multiple pipe OD’s and materials.
Unifit End Caps can be supplied with sockets for pressure testing. Customers can specify the quantity and size of sockets, including flanged outlets. Bolts and rubber seals can be sold as spares if an end cap is used repeatedly.
When the outside diameter of a pipe is not accessible for an end cap to seal on, for example when a pipe enters a chamber and is cut flush with the chamber wall, an End Plug is available on request. End Plugs are also available with sockets for pipeline pressure testing.
