Why do we support such cohorts?

University can be very scary

Prolonged transition support is effective:• Promotes familiarity with the university.• Can reduce isolation.• Can reduce imposter syndrome.• Increases retention.

The majority of changes have been delayed until 2016/7.Mostly due to outrage from leading organisations.Major criticism – lack of consultation with disabled students. The advice from SFE this year is to apply as normal.

I am in desperate need of serious help here, I need someone who knows how to use Java on NetBeans, because I haven't uploaded work for weeks because I have no idea what to do it, I need to catch up on work. Is there any way you can help me? Is there a class besides workshop I could go to that helps students catch up on work? I am literally on the verge of possibly getting kicked out of university. Help me please?

Does anyone here go through bouts of anxiety? I know that I do sometimes struggle with it. I would like to hear from you people, your experiences so far if any and how you get along with it. Thx.

A bit of information about the iPETS photo. This was taken in March 2014 when Professor Les Ebdon (second left) who is the Director of the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) came to visit us for the day. OFFA provides most of the widening participation money to universities in the UK. We call him Les as he is a great fan of the *AccessAbility Project. The lovelies in turquoise are the fabulous *AccessAbility Ambassadors and Graduates.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather. First year for me is nearly over, but wow has it been a life changer. Sometimes we don’t ever know how much of a change university is until we start the first year. I hope everyone has enjoyed their first year. And Thank you Melanie for showing me what the AA ambassadors do and how they have supported loads of young people to encourage them to choose university and not to be scared of the challenges. Its helped me quite a lot and I love the fact that we can share that wisdom onto others and show them why Greenwich is really good and how supportive we are. I can't wait for what the 2nd year holds and I really hope everyone has had a good year.

Dami Agunbiade

Page 15: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

I am Dami Agunbiade and I am 19.I study at Greenwich and I study BSC in Business at the Greenwich campus.I actually live in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in the area of Kidbrooke. I am a member of the *AccessAbility Ambassadors who work with schools and students in years 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. I am transport person and I am very into technology.

About me…..

Page 16: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

So here I will talk about what happened the first year In my timetable I had lectures in Monday and Thursdays and in term 2 I had lectures in addition on FridaysThere is no special kit to buy as this is not a specialist Science subject No placements are required but you can take a placement year at the end of year 2 which is good. I had coursework for each course and also some exams as well.

BSc. Business

Page 17: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

I am a transport person, I can get you anywhere in London. But I am also passionate about the technology which we live around and I also always find out about the new technology I live in. I always try and meet and socialise with friends as that’s something which helps the experience. I am a nice person to get along with and I always get along with new people and pretty easily. A few of new best friends I got along with really well in the year.

Social life…..

Page 18: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

Would I ever get along with anyone? How would I manage workloads and employment? How would I be able to manage my social life?Would I ever meet any new people? How would lectures and seminars run and how many peopled would be attending at a time? Was there any support for people like me who have a disability?

What worried me about uni before PETS?

Page 19: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

I was able to be more confident I made some new friends who I really connected to a lot. My knowledge of the buildings grew as I got to tour the buildings before the year started I really feel more confident when I'm in university meaning I am able to settle in well.

How did PETS benefit me?

Page 20: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

I am able to pass on my knowledge and passion onto younger students to encourage them that Uni is very beneficial I can connect with others who have similar problems and we can all benefit from the knowledge and news. I feel more independent with the support.

Cont….

Page 21: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

The Pets is a community and everyone is equal

No one is separated because of their disability or condition You have support when you need it or if you want to ask a question. You can help empower young people and encourage them that Uni is the way to go

Benefits to others…..

Page 22: This workshop is being recorded in video/audio format by the University of Greenwich The recording may be used by the University of Greenwich for the purposes

People can actually be employed as well as *AccessAbility ambassadors and get paid for helping out The project is very successful, running for many years More people join every year showing the project gets more popular every year
