Dear Parishioners, Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers. We would not be here without our fathers. We thank all the fathers who are present here are Church with us this weekend. We remember all our fathers wherever they are in the world today and we remember those of our fathers who have died. Our relationship with our father is quite unique – for some we pray with thanks, for some we pray with sadness, for others we asked for forgiveness, for others we pray they be forgiven for their faults – whatever our prayer is for our fathers we pray for them today. Next weekend we will take up the Annual Catholic Campaign collection. Over the last few weeks we have been mentioning the different areas the Annual Catholic Campaign will assist – retired and sick Priests, our seminarians, school children and youth, and Centacare. Centacare is the caring arm of our Church who surprisingly assist 89,000 people each year in our Archdiocese. While there is government assistance for quite a lot of this care, there is no government funding for our pastoral work in our prisons, hospitals, psychiatric pastoral care and care for indigenous communities. If you are visited by a hospital chaplain while in hospital, a prison chaplain if you are in prison, a psychiatric carer if you are in a psychiatric hospital, or if you are assisted by an indigenous chaplain, then the Annual Catholic Campaign is assisting in these ministries. Envelopes will be on the seats next weekend for your financial help for our Annual Catholic Campaign. We will be celebrating significant Wedding Anniversaries on Friday, 14 th October at 7.00pm. For anyone whose anniversaries end in “0” or “5” then you are very welcome to attend. Anyone whose spouse cannot attend will be very welcome. This is always a very special Mass attended also by family members and friends if you wish them to attend. Please call the Parish office and let them know that you wish to attend. Every Mass you attend in Paloma and you sit on the seat, that seat has been individually moved especially for you. A very big thank you to everyone who puts out the seats for every Mass on weekdays and weekends – we thank you. Also thank you to those who put the seats away after every weekday Mass and after the weekend Masses. Every weekend about 340 seats are put out and at the end of the weekend they are stacked up. Thank you to everyone who move the seats every weekday and every weekend. Every day during the week Paloma is used for other Parish and community activities. I am happy to see so many people at Mass every weekend. Even though we are celebrating Mass in Paloma we still have very good Mass attendances with between 1800 and 2000 people every weekend. During the week I received a report on how many people access our Parish website. During the month of August 1341 people accessed our Parish website. The report shows some days between 100 and 120 people accessed the website. We often forget that there are so many people interested and involved in our Parish. Next weekend after the 10.30am and 6.00pm Sunday Masses, our Spanish Prayer Community will be selling a whole range of Tacos to help raise some money for the refurbishment and restoration of our Church. Please come prepared to share some Tacos after Mass next weekend. Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year C

Introduction: In today’s Mass, we learn something of the cost of discipleship and what it means to pay the price. For those who follow Jesus, it means leaving everything, taking up our cross, and following him. For Philemon, to whom Paul writes in the Second Reading, it means forgiveness and welcoming back the runaway slave, Onesimus. The cost is high: how ready are we to pay this price?

First Reading: Wisdom 9: 13-18 In this reading, part of King Solomon’s prayer for wisdom, Solomon reflects on the limitations of human wisdom and our need for the gift of divine wisdom. With such a gift, we are saved.

Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17 Paul’s appeal to Philemon on behalf of the slave Onesimus.

Gospel: Luke 14: 25-33 Jesus teaches us the fundamental demand of discipleship: taking up our cross and following him on the path he walks. To underscore the point, Jesus then tells the crowds accompanying him two parables about not starting what you cannot finish.

YEAR OF MERCY FROM POPE FRANCIS I am thinking of those for whom, for various reasons, it will be impossible to enter the Holy Door, particularly the sick and people who are elderly and alone, often confined to the home. For them it will be of great help to live their sickness and suffering as an experience of closeness to the Lord who is the mystery of his Passion, death and Resurrection indicates the royal road which gives meaning to pain and loneliness. Living with faith and joyful hope this moment of trial, receiving communion or attending Holy Mass and community prayer, even through the various means of communication, will be for them the means of obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence. My thoughts also turn to those incarcerated, whose freedom is limited. The Jubilee Year has always constituted an opportunity for great amnesty, which is intended to include the many people who, despite deserving punishment, have become conscious of the injustice they worked and sincerely wish to re-enter society and make their honest contribution to it. May they all be touched in a tangible way by the mercy of the Father who wants to be close to those who have the greatest need of his forgiveness. They may obtain the Indulgence in the chapels of the prisons. May the gesture of directing their thoughts and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell signify for them their passage through the Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts, and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom. [Misericordiae Vultus]

VOCATION VIEW: Jesus says clearly; "Anyone who does not take up the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." You and Jesus can carry your cross together. Then, you can follow!

SUNNYBANK/ACACIA RIDGE FRIENDSHIP GROUP I am extending an invitation to all parishioners, male and female, at Sunnybank and Acacia Ridge to join and become part of the Friendship Group. It would be a real boost to our membership to have some younger people interested in joining us. Our guest speakers always give us good information which we can apply to our daily lives. Our bus trips are relaxing and enjoyable and we find ways to keep people’s interest when we do not have a guest speaker. So I would encourage you to consider joining us and getting to know more of your fellow parishioners in a congenial atmosphere. To help any interested persons why not bring a friend along to either the next general meeting or on the next bus excursion to Marion Valley.
