THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 9, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Coronation of the Image of the Infant of Prague,

July 15 at 9 a.m.

This coming Saturday, July 15, you are invited to come to a special Mass at 9:00 a.m. at which we will place a

new crown on the image of the Infant of Prague that graces our Blessed Sacra-ment Chapel. The new crown is a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Connor in memory of the McCarter and Connor Families.

I chose this particular Satur-day to perform the corona-tion because devotion to the

Infant of Prague has been supported by the members of the Carmelite community since the 16th century, when the original image was placed in the Church of Our Lady of Victory at Prague in what is now the Czech Republic. July 16 is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, so our cele-brations on the day prior will allow us to be connected spiritually to the Carmelite family.

While the original image dates from the mid-16th cen-tury, universal devotion to the Infant of Prague did not come about until 1896 when Pope Leo XIII first approved the devotion for the Catholic faithful and then instituted a sodality in its favor. Pope Saint Pius X raised the sodali-ty to a Confraternity in 1913 that, in turn, gave its mem-bers canonical status in the Church – meaning their devo-tion and works of mercy were now protected by Church law. Many churches have images of the Infant of Prague in them, and devotion to the Infant became popular among the people of Poland, Spain, Portugal, the Philip-pines and throughout Latin America and the nations of the Caribbean.

The devotion primarily is meant to recall that Jesus, the Son of God, came to share our human nature. The feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus on January 3 is tied to the Infant of Prague, too. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn 1:14) is the oft-repeated scripture that ties this devotion to our Catholic-Christian faith. I hope that those of you who are able will join us this com-ing Saturday.

Love, Father Tom

of death.

in hearing the Mass, please come to the sacristy before Mass and see one of the sacristans. We have six devices that can be loaned at each Mass.

Cathedral Gift Shop

NOW HIRING The Cathedral Bell Tower Gift Shop is seeking a part time cash-ier. Prior retail experience is preferred. Proficiency/comfort with computers required. The position requires working a minimum of two weekdays per week, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Please email resume or interest to the Parish Manager at [email protected].

From Father Lawrence:

“Thank you” always sounds so bland, and is much abused. We seem to easily drop a “thanks for everything,” so I wish there was another word I could give you all right now, but it has be to THANK YOU. I have so many things to be grateful

for, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your prayers, kind words of encouragement, and for the beautiful vestments. I have offered Mass for all the donors and parishion-ers of the Cathedral. I have learned so much from working with and for you. Please continue to remember me in all your prayers as I move to the home of

the baseball National Champion Florida Gators! As I look forward to this new chapter in my life at St. Pat-

rick Catholic Church in Gainesville, I will take with me the love and lessons I have learned here. I have enjoyed my time here both as a parishioner and now as a priest, and this place will always be home. Leaving the Cathedral Basilica is not easy, but it is time to go. Since everyone has to leave home at some point, why not now?

Saying hello to new people – be they tourists, new to our town, or even new priests, is not necessarily easy either. But keep your hearts open and offer that hospitality that marks a Christian community, and God will continue to do great and wonderful things here.

With much love and gratitude, Fr. Lawrence

Stewardship reflection for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Does the Holy Spirit dwell within you? If you are a baptized and confirmed Catholic the answer is a resounding “yes.” However, a better question might be “Is the Holy Spirit alive with-in you?” We are all gifted with the Holy Spirit, but how we respond to that gift varies immensely from one person to another. St. Paul says as much in the Second

Reading from his letter to the Romans. Paul says, “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, (He) will give life to your mortal bodies also.” This produces a number of other questions for us as Catholics.

Given that the Spirit is within us, but does the Spirit guide us to Jesus? Are we prepared to be more like Jesus? Are we willing to be His disciple? And especially, Is the Spirit working in our hearts? It is there for each of us, to strengthen us and fortify us and to be with us always. However, we have to accept and embrace that fact. Liv-ing a life of stewardship is one of the ways we can do that. As our Bishops have told us in their pastoral letter on stewardship, “Stewardship is how you respond to Jesus’ call to discipleship and holiness.”

It is a challenge for sure, but it is within the grasp and the capa-bility of each of us. We may have to work at it, but if we trust in God it is most definitely possible.

St. Vincent de Paul needs your help The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to helping the poor-est of the poor and these folks are the ones most impacted by disas-ters. Our client outreach has doubled since the hurricane and so many are still waiting for help. Please consider donating a few hours a week or a month to help make a huge difference in these people's lives. We are looking for warm, compassionate individuals or cou-ples able to show Christ's love to our neighbors. Our Vincentians visit clients two by two, in the client's homes, being present to offer comfort during their stressful situation, helping to assess the needs and provide information for additional opportunities of assis-tance. Our volunteer needs also include helping in our office to handle phones, compiling information, setting up client visits and verifying that areas of help have been completed. The SVDP thrift store is the major funding source for this outreach and volunteers are vital for the continued success of this work. Our store is in con-stant need of folks able to act as cashiers, handle our merchandise and/or stock shelves. All volunteers are screened and trained to assure success of this worthy project. Please contact Cheryle at our client services office at (904) 217-8097 or Barbara at our thrift store (904) 824-3333, and let the folks know you would like to volunteer. You will be welcomed warmly into our family of Vincentians.

Love of neighbor is an absolute demand for justice, because charity must manifest itself in actions and structures which respect human dignity, protect human rights, and facilitate

human development. To promote justice is to transform structures which block love.

PRAYER TO AVERT STORMS Father, all the elements of

nature obey your command. Calm

the storms that threaten us and

turn our fear of your power into

praise of your goodness. Grant

this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one

God, for ever and ever. Amen.
