Dear Parishioners, It is now official! The Church at Our Lady of Lourdes Sunnybank will be Blessed and Reopened by Archbishop Coleridge on Friday, 16 th December at 7.00pm. This is exciting news as we will be able to celebrate Christmas in our refurbished Church. We are gathering a choir to sing for the reopening, if you would like to be a part of the choir please leave a message for Sister Stella at the Parish Office early this week. Our Welcoming Committee is already working on ideas for the reopening. Something to look forward to before Christmas. We had a meeting of architects and builders early in the week and they are still very confident that they will be able to hand over officially the Church to the Parish early in December. This week the frames for the doors and windows are being fitted, most of the tiles on the floor are being laid and the cement for our much anticipated new Bapistry has been poured. Once the church is handed over to the Parish in early December, we will need to bring all the Church furniture and fittings back into the Church. There is still much work to do before Friday, 16 th December. Please continue to pray that everything goes smoothly. You will notice in the newsletter, the Wish List items for the refurbished Church. Anyone wishing to give any items on the Wish List or to give towards the Buy the Cubic Metre Campaign are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. All donations will be recognised either by a small plaque on the item donated or the name of the giver will be printed on the glass beside the side doors of the Church. We need to finalise these names very soon. As always, I am very appreciative of all those who give in any way towards our final goal of a wonderful refurbished Church. This weekend we will take up a collection for the street kids of Papua New Guinea. A short video will be played towards the end of Mass to show where the donations are going. Last weekend the gates for the entry of Our Lady of Lourdes School were closed at some of the Masses. In future, if you notice the gates are closed, please feel free to open them and park in the area in front of the school administration block. The gates will normally be open every weekend for parking for our Masses - the only exception normally being for the school Fete. The parishes Friendship Group will meet this Wednesday to celebrate Remembrance Day. A member of the RSL will be present to help us remember those who fought for our freedom and peace. During the week Fr Ladu, Fr Dom and I, attended the 75 th Anniversary Celebrations of our Seminary at Banyo. The three of us have attended the Seminary at Banyo as we studied for the Priesthood. Please continue to pray for our Seminarians and also pray for vocations to the Priesthood. Question - How many Holy Days of Obligation are there in Australia? Answer – two! The two Holy Days of Obligation in Australia are the Assumption, 15th August and Christmas Day, 25th December. In each country in the world the Bishops conference decides how many Holy Days of Obligation are celebrated in the country. In many countries overseas, there are other days which are celebrated as Holy Days of Obligation. Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year C

Introduction: Sunday, the Lord’s Day, brings us together to profess and renew our faith and our hope in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. And because of his resurrection, we believe in our own future resurrection. We humbly thank God for the gift of faith.

First Reading: 2 Maccabees 7: 1-2, 9-14 These verses from the second Book of Maccabees contain one of the earliest expressions to be found in the Old Testament of faith in a personal resurrection from the dead.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2: 16 – 3: 5 Paul urges the Christians of Thessalonica to pray that the message he proclaims may be listened to and received with honour. He prays that the Lord may turn their hearts to the love of God.

Gospel: Luke 20: 27-38 In responding to the Saddeucees, who did not believe in the resurrection of the dead, Jesus leaves his hearers in no doubt as to the accuracy of the faith some of them already profess in their individual resurrection from death.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS You and Your Wife

9. Let us cross the threshold of this tranquil home, with its family sitting around the festive table. At the centre we see the father and mother, a couple with their personal story of love. They embody the primordial divine plan clearly spoken of by Christ himself: “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female?” (Mt 19:4). We hear an echo of the command found in the Book of Genesis: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Gen 2: 24).

10. The majestic early chapters of Genesis present the human couple in its deepest reality. Those first pages of the Bible make a number of very clear statements. The first, which Jesus paraphrases, says that “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (1: 27). It is striking that the “image of God” here refers to the couple, “male and female”. Does this mean that sex is a property of God himself, or that God has a divine female companion, as some ancient religions held? Naturally, the answer is no. We know how clearly the Bible rejects as idolatrous such beliefs, found among the Canaanites of the Holy Land. God’s transcendence is preserved, yet inasmuch as he is also the Creator, the

fruitfulness of the human couple is a living and effective “image”, a visible sign of his creative act. [Amoris Laetitia]

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY PLEASE HELP THE STREET KIDS IN LAE, PNG

This weekend we are conducting out annual appeal to help Fr Arnold in Lae to educate large numbers of children to give them a chance in life and to prevent them from falling into a life of crime and corruption. This year, because of the generosity of parish members, Father Arnold has been able to educate almost 100 children and to provide them with a safe and secure environment. He has also been able to organise a health care program for the needy children in the city. Pope Francis has said, ‘The world needs Christians to witness God’s mercy through service to the poorest. In putting ourselves at the service of the neediest, we will experience that we are united: it is God’s mercy that unites us.’ Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes School and St Thomas More College are also assisting in the project. Collectors will be outside the Church at all Masses this weekend to accept donations. Father Arnold thanks you for your generosity in the past and we hope that our support will allow him to continue his great work in the future.
