Dear Friends, On 8 th December, the Pope will begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The 8 th December is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary and it is 50 years since the end of the Section Vatican Council. The motto for the year, “Merciful like the Father” serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of God who asks us not to judge or condemn, but to offer love and forgiveness instead. We will hear more about Mercy throughout the year. The Deanery will use the Year of Mercy as its central theme during Lent next year. We are distributing a card with a short prayer on Mercy and the dates during Lent when we will have guest speakers in the different Parishes of our Deanery on the Thursday nights of Lent. We will have a pilgrimage throughout the Deanery moving from Parish to Parish on the Thursday nights of Lent . The title of the pilgrimage next year is Faith 16. This weekend at our Masses, the central character in the Gospel is John the Baptist. During Mass we will play a CD which talks about John the Baptist as a “Voice in the Wilderness”. As I mentioned in the newsletter last weekend, Advent is a time of “Preparation”. We prepare for the celebration of the first coming of Christ as a child, and we also remember that we look forward to the second coming of Christ. A good way to prepare during Advent is celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each Saturday at Sunnybank, we have Reconciliation (the Sacrament of Penance) at 11.00am and 5.00pm. On Wednesday 15 th December, we will celebrate a Community Rite of Reconciliation at 7.00pm at Sunnybank. At Sunnybank we are celebrating an extra weekday Mass at 6.00pm on Wednesday evenings. At Acacia Ridge there will be special Masses early in the mornings at 4:30am to start the day. These special Masses at Acacia Ridge begin on 16th December till 24th December. Next Friday at Sunnybank, 11 th December, we will celebrate the Seniors Anointing Mass at 10.00am. During Mass we will anoint those who are getting on in years or who are ill. You are invited to stay for a special Christmas morning tea after Mass. At all our Masses at Sunnybank and Acacia Ridge this weekend, the members of our St Vincent de Paul Conferences will take up the annual Christmas Appeal to assist those in need in our area. Thank you so much for your generosity. We ask all of our Ministers to volunteer for ministries at all the Masses at Christmas. Second Sunday of Advent: Year C

Introduction: Today’s readings remind us that Christian Hope works most powerfully in times of darkness and desolation where it is God who comes to meet us so as to lead us along His way.

First Reading: Baruch 5: 1-9 Jerusalem - the centre and symbol of God’s presence with his people - is the focus of God’s joy and is called to be a witness to the nations.

Second Reading: Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11 Paul encourages the community at Philippi to grow in love as they prepare for the Lord’s final coming.

Gospel: Luke 3: 1-6 Hope in its practical expression shows itself in preparing for the salvation of God.

YEAR OF MERCY POPE FRANCIS

“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him.”

[Misericordiae vultus, no.1]

YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Send your spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to the captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the Intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

FAITH 16

Pope Francis (2015) in announcing the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, reminded us that we need to “contemplate the mystery of mercy” as mercy is a source of peace, joy and serenity that our salvation relies on and is revealed in the Most Holy Trinity. Pope Francis continues telling us that mercy is God’s ultimate and supreme act in which God comes to meet us, it is the fundamental law that dwells in each heart and it connects God and man as hearts are opened by the hope of everlasting love despite our sinfulness.

Pope Francis calls us to recognise and live the season of Lent in this Jubilee year with greater intensity and to treat the season as a time to celebrate and experience God’s mercy. The Brisbane South Deanery, in listening to this call, will pilgrimage to Parishes in the Deanery every Thursday evening during the season of Lent 2016.

SENIORS ANOINTING MASS

AND CHRISTMAS MORNING TEA

The Seniors Anointing Mass will be celebrated on 11

th December 2015 at 10.00am. This Mass will

include the anointing of the sick and the elderly. All senior parishioners including the recently retired are welcome to attend. There will be a special Christmas Morning Tea in the Paloma Centre following the Mass.

BIBLE STUDY GROUP Bible Study Group will not meet during December 2015 and January 2016. New Sessions begin in February 2016.

ADVENT REFLECTION

The thrust of John the Baptist’s ministry is repentance leading to forgiveness of sins. He emphasizes honesty and humility. In our world of rampant corruption, what place has honesty? In a society of one-upmanship, who thinks of humility? While dishonesty and pride bring only short-term success, honesty and humility produce lasting fruits. Above all, they unfailingly lead to the Saviour and the salvation he brings.
