Philippians 4:1-3 (ESV)

Jesus the reconcilerThis week we’re learning how Jesus reconciles us to God and what it looks like to live a reconciled life.

Share Your StoryBegin by praying together. This should be a brief, simple prayer in which you invite God to give you insight as you study. You can pray for specific requests at the end of your time together or stop momentarily to pray if a particular situation comes up during your discussion.

Then begin your time together by discussing the following questions.

• When have you seen a broken relationship restored? What brought about the restoration of the relationship?

• When is a time you’ve had a significant relationship broken, only to have it restored later? What brought about your reconciliation?

• What makes it hard to have a broken relationship restored?

NorthlandChurch.net/StudiesAfterward have someone read the discussion questions in the “Hear God’s Story” section and start the conversation.

Hear God’s Story and Create a New Story READ 2 CORINTHIANS 5:16-21 (NIV)

Read the passages together, and then discuss the following questions.

• What separates us from God, according to verse 19? How does God end that separation and reconcile us with him?

• Verse 17 tells us that anyone following Jesus experiences a “new creation.” What role does reconciliation play in this “new creation”?

• What does it mean to be one of “Christ’s ambassadors” (v. 20)? As ambassadors, what is the appeal God is making through us?

• Before you began following Jesus, what was separating you from God? Why isn’t that a cause of separation any longer?

• What keeps you united with God now? What threatens your unity with Him?

• With whom has God put you in relationship so that you can serve as God’s ambassador? Practically speaking, what are the steps you can take in your relationship with that person?

Give each person an opportunity to share prayer requests.

Find Your Story in God’s StoryIf you feel God is nudging you to go deeper, take some time between now and our next discussion to dig into His Word. Explore the Bible passages related to this session’s theme on your own, jotting your reflections in a journal or in this study guide. Want to go deeper? Select a few verses and try paraphrasing them: writing them in your own words. If you like, share them with the group the next time you meet.

Jesus came to reconcile us to God so we no longer have to experience separation from God through a broken relationship. Jesus also came so we can experience wholeness in our other relationships, so we can be freed from the cycle of relationships that can only move toward brokenness.

READ ROMANS 5:6-11 (NIV)

• What price did Jesus have to pay to reconcile us to God? Why did Jesus have to pay a price to restore us?

• What are some of the broken relationships in your life? How could you work toward reconciliation? What cost are you willing to bear?

• How can the people in your group or community help you move toward reconciling a broken relationship? How have the people in your group helped you move closer to God?

READ MATTHEW 5:21-24 (NIV)

• Why do we need reconciliation with the people we’ve divided from? What happens to us when we remain divided from people we were close to?

• What priority is Jesus putting on reconciliation, according to this passage?

• With whom can you go and be reconciled, or at least attempt reconciliation, starting this week?

Looking for more questions and reflections so you can keep digging deeper? There’s even more to this week’s study available on Northland’s apps or at NorthlandChurch.net/Studies.
