A: The 16 th century author of the Shulchan Arukh, Rav Yosef Cairo, writes (OC 551:17) that it is best to avoid reciting the Brakha of Shehecheyanu during the Three Weeks. The Magen Avraham (1633-1683) explains (551:42) that the reason for this is that in the Brakha of Shehecheyanu we say Shecheyanu V’kiyemanu V’higiyanu La’zman Hazeh (“Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and allowed us to reach this time”). It is therefore inappropriate to recite the Brakha during the Three Weeks as we are not happy to find ourselves in this time period as it is one of tragedy and mourning. The Shulchan Arukh (ibid) writes though that an exception to this rule would be when there is a Pidyon Ha’Ben, as in such a situation the father of the child would recite Shehecheyanu. Furthermore, the Rema (OC 551:17) notes that in a situation where one finds a new fruit during the Three Weeks, and will not be able to find it afterwards, it would be permissible to recite Shehecheyanu on the new fruit. Finally, another exception to the rule might be reciting the Brakha of Shehecheyanu on Shabbat as the Magen Avraham (ibid) quotes an argument regarding whether this would be permissible or not (see Chazon Ovadia pages 130-135 where Rav Ovadia Yosef writes that it would be permissible to recite Shehecheyanu on Shabbat except for the Shabbat that falls out during the Nine Days where one should not recite it on new clothing). Q: Is one permitted to recite the Brakha of Shehecheyanu during the Three Weeks?

A: The 16th century author of the Shulchan Arukh, Rav Yosef Cairo, writes (OC 551:17) that it is best to avoid reciting the Brakha of Shehecheyanu during the Three Weeks.

THANK YOU FROM THE REINERS!

Ilan and Neda Reiner would like to thank Rabbi Muskin, Rabbi Proops, David Gershov, Daniel Silverman and the entire community for their support and comfort during the Shivah. We were not alone despite not being able to have any in-person visitations. At this point, we would like to announce that we are moving to Israel in a couple of weeks. Being part of the YICC community for the past 8 years has been a privilege. It's amazing how many great things happen in the Kehilah, and being surrounded by all the wonderful people has been a tremendous experience. We are ever so grateful to you for welcoming us. Please keep in touch and come to visit when you're in Israel. We should create a group of YICC@IL to always keep in touch.

DAVENING AT HOME

Minhagim and Halakhot - Shabbat Parashat Pinchas

July 10, 2020 – July 17, 2020

By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

During the Covid-19 crisis, the following guide should be followed if you are

davening without a Minyan.

Friday July 10th

• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit.

• Early Mincha is at 6:25 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:38 PM.

• If one accepts Shabbat before Shkiah (8:07 PM), Mincha should begin no later

than 7:55 PM and candles no later than 7:49 PM.

Shabbat July 11th – Pinchas

• Shacharit is a regular Shabbat Shacharit.

• Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited when davening with a Minyan.

• The Torah reading from a Chumash is Pinchas. The Haftorah is the first of the

special three Haftorot before Tisha B’Av. It is from Yirmiyahu (1:1-2:3).

• Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only

when davening with a Minyan.

• Recite the Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael.

• Recite Av HaRachamim followed by Ashrei.

• Mincha can be said as early as 1:35 PM but no later than 7:50 PM.

• During Mincha recite the sentence V’Ani Tefilati right after U’va L’Tziyon.

• Recite Tzidkatcha Tzedek at Mincha.

• Maariv is the regular weekday Maariv.

• Recite V’he Noam and V’yeeten Lecha.

• Shabbat ends 8:52 PM. Say a complete Havdalah.

Sunday July 12th - Thursday July 16th

• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha.

• On Monday and Thursday recite the longer version of Tachanun just like we do if

we had a Minyan and were reading the Torah.

• Rabbi Soloveitchik Z”L was of the opinion that when saying Tachanun even when

a Sefer Torah isn’t present, one should still fall on one’s arm and recite the

opening chapter just like the way we do when davening inside a Shul.

Friday July 17th

• Regular weekday Davening with Tachanun at Shacharit.

• Early Mincha is at 6:25 PM. Earliest candle lighting is at 6:36 PM.

• If one accepts Shabbat before Shkiah (8:04 PM), Mincha should begin no later

than 7:50 PM and candles no later than 7:46 PM
