THIS WEEK KAUAI

Kaua‘i’s northernmost point Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary. The 160-acre refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point.

Historic Significance This wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. The Humpback Whale Na-tional Marine Sanctuary also has a presence with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mam-mals and sea turtles.

Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with prevent-ing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and is closed on major federal holidays. Turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413, Map C:E21.

THIS WEEK KAUAI

Nicknamed ‘‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’’ by author Mark Twain, the Waimea Canyon is a majestic sight. The canyon rests at the end of a long, curvy and slowly ascending road up Highway 552-Koke‘e Road, ending at Koke‘e and Waimea Canyon State Parks.

At 10 miles long, a mile wide and over 3,600 feet deep, this mammoth chasm features four-million-year-old lava rock and displays variegated hues of red, purple, green and blue, depending on the weather and time of day. From vantage lookout points, you may get a glimpse of neighboring Ni‘ihau, Waipo‘o Falls, the Kalalau Valley and the Napali Coast. Some of the island’s best hikes are accessible from the park, ranging from starter trails perfect for families, to longer, more strenuous trails for experienced hikers. Since much of Kaua‘i is not accessible by road, this is truly the way to see some of the island’s endemic plants and wildlife, as well as commanding views of Waimea Canyon. Hikers are advised to check weather conditions before getting started. Koke‘e forest is a rainforest, after all, so be prepared for rain and lots of mud! As with any hike, you should take the necessary precautions. Hike with a buddy, bring plenty of water and snacks, and always stay on the trail. You may want to bring a jacket, too—temperatures range from 50-

70 degrees fahrenheit in the fall. If you’re in the mood to stay a while, campgrounds are available at Koke‘e State Park, in addition to a host of other amenities including restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic areas. Camping permits can be purchased at hawaiistateparks.org. The Lodge at Koke‘e offers two-bedroom cabins, camping, and even a restaurant/bar for those who need to take a break from sightseeing. Visit lodgeatkokee.net for more information. To learn about some of the island’s native plants and animals, stop by Koke’e Natural History Museum. Ask the staff about seasonal activities, and what hike is best for your group. If you want to be sure about their hours before heading out, call 808-335-9975. Map E.

by Karee Carlucci

In the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant, we hear of the birth of whales: Hanau ka palaoa noho i kai (Born is the whale living in the sea). As the largest ocean animal, the whale was considered a majestic embodiment of Kanaloa, Hawaiian god of the ocean, its animals, water and growth on land and in the sea. Whales, called palaoa in general, were so revered by ancient Hawaiians that obtaining their ivory teeth to be worn as a lei niho palaoa (whale tooth pendant) was reserved only for members of the ruling class. Today, whales are still revered in Hawai‘i, and from December through April, would-be whale watchers flock to the Hawaiian Islands to engage with the visiting Humpbacks. Since it is estimated that 60 percent of the North Pacific Humpback whale population migrates to Hawai‘i’s waters each season, your chances of viewing a whale are very good. Humpbacks are easily seen from the land or coastline because of their tendency to congregate near shore and frolic just outside the reefs. Often, you can witness their playfulness from a hotel room, the beach or an oceanside restaurant. The best whale viewing can be had by going on a whale watch tour. Humpbacks winter in Hawai‘i’s warm waters to mate and calve, and they usually don’t eat during this time. Their gestation period is nearly a year, so a whale conceived in Hawai‘i one winter will be born here the next. A Humpback mother and newborn calf will stay close to shore for nursing. The calf will consume about 100 gallons of his mother’s fat-rich milk a day and can double in length during his first year. When males are ready to get the attention of females for mating, their behavior goes into overdrive. The sheer force of their slaps and a move known as the peduncle throw (the rear portion of the body including the fluke is thrown up out of the water and slammed down sideways) can be seen and heard from the shore. Another spectacular sight is a breaching whale in which two-thirds or more of its body propels out of the water in a graceful arch. Sometimes, a whale will bring its head above the surface of the water to just below its eye and turn around—this is called “spy hopping,” which gives the whale a chance to check out the surroundings. Humpbacks are also renowned for communicating by song—these complex, repetitive sounds can last between six and 18 minutes—that you can hear underwater. Only males sing and they usually do it in the breeding and calving grounds. Researchers have found that all the males in a population seem to sing the same song. To spot a whale, look for a blow (spout of water vapor) against the horizon or huge splashes of white water against the blue sea. To photograph a whale, hold the camera steady and don’t try to follow the motion of a whale. No matter how many times you witness the whales, you’ll cherish the experience.

When visiting new or different places and cultures, one of the easiest ways to acclimate is with dining choices. The flavors of the tropics, along with produce from local farmers, are infused into the many dishes available on Kaua‘i.

AMERICAN Style, Island FLAIROn Kaua‘i, American staples—such as burgers, hot dogs and milk shakes—meet tropical flavors with refreshingly tasty results. Throw into the mix some American comfort foods like meatloaf, pot roast and fried chicken, and you’ll feel like you’ve just discovered a brand new cuisine.

Hawai‘i Regional cuisineHawai‘i Regional Cuisine is a distinct cooking style in the forefront of the culinary world, developed in 1991 by 12 island chefs. These culinary innovators use ingredients from local growers and combine them with cooking methods from each chef’s background, be it Asian, American, Pacific Rim or European.

Farm to TableMany isle chefs use produce, meats and other ingredients grown by Kaua‘i farmers, many of whom grow organic. Farm-fresh flavors are distinct and memorable, plus you’ll get lots of nutritional value in every delicious morsel. Learn about Kaua‘i grown on page 50.

DINNER SHOWsDance, music and a thriving professional theater community provide quality entertainment for children and adults. It’s simply delightful combined with dinner!

THIS WEEK KAUAI

The bountiful food and lively Polynesian performances of today’s lu‘au has its roots in ancient Hawai‘i. The kapu system once forbade men and women from eating together, but in 1819, King Kamehameha I removed the law, hence allowing all people to come together to enjoy their meals—this was the beginning of the lu‘au. Today, some local families celebrate a special occasion—baby’s

first birthday, graduation, anniversary or wedding—with a backyard lu‘au. Food, music and fun are casually enjoyed by all, and even if you’re not related by blood to the host family, you will be considered family by the end of the festivities. That is the spirit of the lu‘au, and in general, the spirit of the Hawaiian people. It’s your turn to become part of an extended family. Every lu‘au has its own distinct feature separating it from the others, but all provide a feast of Hawaiian

and local fare, spirited performances, fun audience participation and lots of laughter. Most feature an imu ceremony when the kalua pig is ceremoniously lifted from its below-ground oven. This traditional style of cooking uses a combination of heated native hardwood and basaltic stones (which hold heat but are porous enough to not shatter) with banana and ti leaves lining the imu walls. Though it takes about a day or less for the pig to cook, the process of building and preparing the imu takes a few days. Additional lu‘au mainstays include poi (pictured top right), lomi lomi salmon, lau lau, squid lu‘au, baked sweet potato and haupia dessert made from coconut milk. Guests can also participate in ancient Hawaiian games and cultural demonstrations. You do as much—or as little—as you wish. Casual attire is suggested and alohawear is best!

In a paradise such as the Hawaiian Islands, an innovative vision was conceived by a group of culinary masters. Born in 1991, a core group of 12 founding chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide as Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine.

This culinary genre was developed and refined through the alchemy of Hawai‘i’s top creative chefs, who combined Eastern and Western culinary traditions to create unique, Pacific-inspired dishes. With a focus on presentation, preparation and the achievement of artistic perfection, the results have been resoundingly successful.

The 12 original pioneers of Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine are Chefs Sam Choy, Roger Dikon, Mark Ellman, Beverly Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin, George Mavrothalassitis, Peter Merriman, Amy Ferguson Ota, Philippe Padovani, Gary Strehl, Alan Wong, and Roy Yamaguchi. While visiting Kaua‘i, take the opportunity to experience the cuisine that put Hawai‘i on the culinary map. This distinct cooking style incorporates locally grown ingredients and flavors ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to many different types of meat and seafood varieties. Taste seafood caught fresh that morning, fruits and vegetables picked right off the vine, grass-fed beef, herbs snipped minutes before use and more. You’re sure to be dazzled by the selection of exciting entrees and delectable desserts on the menus of the finest restaurants on the island.

Kaua‘i’s island neighbor, Ni‘ihau (known as the “Forbidden Isle”), is the source of the delicate white, yellow, blue and rare gold shells that are collected, sorted, finely drilled and painstakingly strung into necklaces and chokers by Ni‘ihau residents. These garlands are usually of museum quality and can be found in isle jewelry stores; ask the retailer for a certificate of authenticity.

In case you’ve been in a vacation stupor, we’re here to tell you the holiday countown has already begun. It’s time to start crossing out names on your gift list. Although some folks may try to keep calories off during this time of year, the majority love to indulge! Popular items to please the tastebuds include award-winning mustards or dressings or passion fruit jellies, syrups, butters or sauces from Aunty Lilikoi. Papalua Island offers their award-winning Hula Baby Biscotti and Granola, plus lots of gift goodies specifically for the holidays.

From bean to brew, Kauai Coffee Company grows, harvests and roasts Kaua‘i-grown coffee beans onsite. What makes it easy for gifters are the easily packable coffee bags, plus they’re available in a range of flavors! Homemade chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons make delicious gifts, but also consider the holiday cookies and biscotti: mac nut with crystallized ginger, mochachino, peppermint, cranberry orange pistachio and more. You’ll find these tasty delights at Kauai Granola. The items at Salty Wahine appeal to the savory side with its wide selection of Hawaiian sea salts, seasonings and rub blends perfect for beef, poultry, pork, seafood and more. You may not know this, but alongside its premium gelato and sorbetto, Papalani Gelato has all natural artisanal chocolates handmade in the shop. Yum! Koloa Mill Ice Cream also carries lots of edibles—perfect for adding to your gift box or basket. Shops may not necessarily have gift boxes or baskets, but many do have items that are pre-boxed and ready to wrap or ship. The giving spirit of the holidays is something we can all appreciate year round. You don’t need a special occasion to give a gift; you just need someone special to give it to.

The tradition of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry began around 1887. Hawai‘i’s Queen Kapi‘olani and Princess Lili‘uokalani attended Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in England, where they received gifts of solid gold bracelets with their names carved in old English lettering. Upon their return, the Hawaiian royals had similar bracelets made for their relatives, beginning a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Available at Robert’s Jewelry, 877-465-3534, and Old Hawaiian Trading Post, 808-332-7404.

Visitors to the Garden Isle are often enchanted with the spectacular scenery, friendly residents and laid back island lifestyle. Why not take home some of the magic by selecting items manufactured by artisans, farmers, ranchers, musicians, publishers, and other locally owned businesses that create their products from materials on Kaua‘i. Many of these businesses are members of a special Kaua‘i County program called Kaua‘i Made. The program screens members to ensure

that their unique items are made on the island by local residents, using Kaua‘i materials where possible. Visit kauaimade.net for a detailed listing of businesses and retailers who carry Kaua‘i Made products. Another exclusive island program is Kaua‘i Grown, a Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau program. It puts the spotlight on the local farmers and ranchers who grow island produce and livestock, along

Restaurants, coffee shops, cute boutiques and art galleries are easily within walking distance from one another in the close-knit community of Koloa (Map D). This is the site of the state’s oldest plantation settlement, and where sugar was king in 1835. Get a glimpse of the town’s former plantation history at the Koloa History Center. Open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily, you’ll see exhibits with photos and artifacts from the plantation era. The outside directory illustrates the layout of historical buildings and landmarks. You’ll also see plaques on each building that tell the story of the businesses and

families who once lived, worked and played there. On the way to or from Koloa, you’ll enjoy a drive through the Tree Tunnel on Highway 520 or Maluhia Road. History names a Scottish cattle rancher, Walter Duncan McBryde, as the one who planted 500 fragrant eucalyptus trees along the road more than 150 years ago. Open the window to breathe in the delicious fresh scent of eucalyptus, and passengers, get your camera ready! Map D:B4.

Kaua‘i’s top beachesThere is a captivating and picturesque quality to all of the Garden Isle beaches. You’ll find 50 miles of white or golden sand fringing the roughly circular-shaped island. You may even spot the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, known to appear for a nap on the sunny beaches of Po‘ipu.

The paradisical scenery of Kaua‘i is really quite astonishing, although much of the beauty is inaccessible by car. Get out and explore the island’s hidden treasures on a fun and exhilarating guided off-road tour. A few options include ziplining and horseback riding. On a Kaua‘i zipline tour, you’ll soar like an eagle over tropical jungle

terrain, remote backcountry hills and lush valleys with sky high ocean views. Participants strap on a safety harness with hardware attaching to a steel cable. The rider pushes off from a platform and zips along to a platform at the other end. Explore magical, diverse and remote regions which reveal some of Kaua‘i’s ancient geological and archaeological sites, all from the saddle of a magnificent steed while tour guides provide fascinating facts. There are a variety of terrains over which your horse may walk, trot or gallop. View lush inland valleys and wide open spaces as you and your equestrian partner speed across a working cattle ranch. Be sure to check with your provider about activity requirements. Whatever off-road adventure you decide to take, you will receive a basic training session to know what to expect. Now you’re ready to explore Kaua‘i off the beaten track.

Fueled by nearly 440 inches of rain each year, Wailua River has a mighty presence. The river’s journey begins on the slopes of Mount Wai‘ale‘ale, a dormant crater that stands as a testament to the fiery beginnings of Kaua‘i’s eden-like beauty.

At 5,243 feet, Wai‘ale‘ale (Hawaiian for “rippling waters”) is considered one of the rainiest spots on earth. Its height, conical shape and position in the island chain create the trifecta of weather conditions for abundant rainfall. From the summit, the river travels nearly 10 miles down the southeast face emptying out its liquid cargo in two popular and easily accessible waterfalls: the 80-foot Wailua Falls and Opaeka‘a Falls. “Opaeka‘a” means “rolling

shrimp,” many of which were once plentiful in the stream. But the journey doesn’t end there. The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Its lushness is attributed to the river’s tendency to overflow its banks depositing nutrient-rich sediments along the river’s edge. Rich soil, coupled with the ancient Hawaiian’s acumen for horticulture, made the region a natural breadbasket. Tributaries carry the river inland allowing for the construction of fishponds. And while shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas. The power and presence of the river was not lost on the ancient Hawaiians. Its significance was marked by the construction of seven heiau (shrines) along the river. The first, Ka‘awako heiau, is located atop the mountain. From the mountain to the sea, where it empties out, Wailua River is a valuable cultural link to Hawai‘i’s ancient past.

The Napali coastline on Kaua‘i’s north shore stands among the sheerest in the world. The serrated-edged cliffs jut up into the sky and abruptly drop from view into the ocean. The ancient Hawaiians favored these shores because of their easy access to typically “hard-

to-catch” ocean delicacies. Extensive stone foundations and walls can still be found on the valley floors, remnants of once thriving Hawaiian settlements. Waterfalls and swift flowing streams continue to carve out these rugged valleys and shape the shorelines. Although it’s one of the most remote regions in the world, the Napali coastline is accessible by foot, air or sea. Ke‘e Beach is the furthest a car can venture. To the east is Ha‘ena Beach Park with sheltered picnic tables. To the west of Ke‘e Beach is

the Kalalau Trail, a premier backpacking hike. The first two miles of the trail is a popular day hike for many visitors and residents. It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it finally comes to an end at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path. If you’re intent on tackling the entire trail, you should be well prepared with sufficient food, water, shelter and a permit. This intermediate to advanced hike requires hikers to at least be in better than average physical condition. Obtain a hiking permit from the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources office; call 808-274-3444 or visit the website at hawaiistateparks.org.

more. Activity providers have professional trained guides and offer a variety of dive options, as well as classes.

Surfing Surfing as both sport and transportation is important in Hawai‘i’s history, dating back to the 15th century. Over the years, surfing has branched out into many variations. For example, in body or boogie boarding, you’ll ride waves on four-foot boards in a reclining or kneeling position. With stand up paddle (SUP) boarding, no waves are needed as you glide on top of the water. You’ll get a full body workout and it’s great fun for the whole family.

Kayaking A kayak for one, two or three paddlers is a fun way to get really close to the water. Many providers offer guided tours, as well as equipment. Instead of ocean kayaking, paddle down the winding Wailua River. Learn about the area’s cultural and historical signficance to the early Hawaiians from knowledgable tour guides.

I mean you, Bubba,& Li’l Bubba too––

Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry.

Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime.

The Bubba s n o r k e l s are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today.

FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!
