aptain Chris of Na Pali Riders has the only raft company consistently touring

the ENTIRE 17 miles of the Na Pali Coast.* Captain Chris says, “Touring the Na Pali Coast truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We make sure that our passengers get to see it all including the famous sites of Hanakoa Valley, Hanakapi‘ai Valley, the Pi-rates Sea Cave, and the Double Door Cave. These are some of the most significant attractions on the Na Pali Coast and should not be missed.”

The Na Pali Riders’ difference starts with attention to detail in all aspects of our Na Pali Coast Raft Tour. We offer a ride on our state-of-the-art 30-foot, 920 Zodiac raft.

Departures are from the West Side’s Kikiaola Harbor in Waimea, the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast. Snorkeling takes place at one of three different locations depending on currents, water clarity and conditions per-mitting. All beginning snorkelers have our experienced and knowledgeable crewmen as their personal guides.

The Na Pali Riders difference is unbelievable. We are the only ones to guarantee satisfaction or you can go again FREE. Call direct (808) 742-6331 for reservations. We also provide discounts for Military, Kama’aina and Groups.

Drive over to sunny Po‘ipu for the 29th Annual Koloa Plantation Days, July 18-27, where you’ll mix and mingle with local folks, and learn about the rich cultural and historical background of the Koloa and Po‘ipu communities. Koloa is where Hawai‘i’s first sugar plantation was founded in 1835. As such, countless immigrants from the Philippines, Europe, the Azores, Japan, Korea, China and other locales came to work on the plantation, and called this area home. They brought with them cultural traditions, music, dances and foods ensuring the rich melting pot that is Hawai‘i. You’ll experience all this during the 10-day festival, in addition to the culture, traditions, crafts and music of the host Hawaiian culture. Participate in any of the 25 family-friendly events featuring a diverse range of local foods, culture and activities, nature walks to discover the area’s unique ecology and archaeology, plus enjoy the warmth of the aloha spirit from isle residents. More fish choicesAhi Tuna, Yellowfin/Bigeye Tuna

Considered one of Hawai‘i’s most popular choices, ahi is served raw as sliced sashimi or cooked rare.

Ono, Wahoo

A distinctive, yet delicate, tangy-citrus flavor simillar to poultry or veal. Chewy and firm texture.

Mahimahi, Dolphin Fish

Mahimahi is for the finicky fish eater. It has a mellow, lemony, sweet-rich flavor with a silky, yet flaky, tender texture.

Eat fresh fish

Enjoy fresh cuts of isle fish in sushi rolls, fresh sashimi, in a poke dish, as ceviche or in a seafood chowder. Ono! Delicious!

Choosing the right fish from the menu is like selecting fine wine—each has its own taste, aroma and texture. People eat twice as much seafood in Hawai‘i as the U.S. per capita national average. What does that mean to you? Every restaurant has fresh fish on the menu with a not-so-familiar Hawaiian name. Use this guide to find the fish that has the qualities you enjoy the most.

OpakapakaPink Snapper: This delicately f lavored fish has a tender texture perfectly suited for baking, poaching and sauteing.

In a paradise such as the Hawaiian Islands, an innovative vision was conceived by a group of culinary masters. Born in 1991, a core group of 12 founding chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide as Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine. This culinary genre was developed and refined through the alchemy of Hawai‘i’s top creative chefs, who combined Eastern and Western culinary traditions to create unique, Pacific-inspired dishes. This distinct cooking style, with a farm-to-table philosophy, incorporates locally grown ingredients and f lavors ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to many different types of meat and seafood varieties. As one of 12 original pioneers of HRC, Peter Merriman

continues to offer the best with two restaurants focusing on a farm-to-table philosophy. At Merriman’s Fish House, you might want to try the Wok Charred Ahi and Crispy Day Boat Mahimahi, both Merriman’s signature dishes. Yearning for earthy, locally grown and organic? Head to Merriman’s Gourmet Pizza & Burgers. You’ll find organic salads, fresh fish, burgers made with locally raised, grass-fed cattle and 100 percent whole wheat gourmet pizzas.

The bountiful food and lively Polynesian performances of today’s lu‘au has its roots in ancient Hawai‘i. The kapu system once forbade men and women from eating together, but in 1819, King Kamehameha I removed the law, thus allowing all to gather to enjoy their meals—this was the beginning of the lu‘au.

Today, a few local families celebrate a special occasion—baby’s first birthday, graduation or anniversary—with a backyard lu‘au. Food, music and fun are enjoyed by all, and even if you’re not related by blood to the host family, you will be considered family by the end of the evening. That is the spirit of the lu‘au, and in general, the spirit of the Hawaiian people. It’s your turn to become part of an extended family. Enjoy a feast of Hawaiian and local fare, spirited performances, audience participation and lots of laughter.

A lei and live Hawaiian music greet guests upon arrival at ‘Auli‘i Lu‘au. Visit with artisans exhibiting their works before the sway of the hula and graceful hands beckon all to enjoy top notch hula and Polynesian performances and a Hawaiian banquet. Shows are 5:30 p.m. every Mon. and Thurs. The Smith Family Garden Luau provides guests with a multi-generational lu‘au experience in a 30-acre lush garden setting within the Wailua River valley. An imu ceremony, authentic isle feast and international dance performances are part of the experience. Also explore the garden or take a narrated tram tour.

island jewelry

Gems unique to the islands are all quality made and painstakingly crafted to ref lect the true beauty and traditions of its heritage. The neighboring ‘‘Forbidden Isle’’ of Ni‘ihau is the source of Ni‘ihau shells. Legally, these shells can only be called ‘‘Ni‘ihau’’ if they are collected from the shores of said island. Tiny and delicate, the shells generally fall into three categories: kahelani, momi, laiki, as well as kamoa, a shell in a contrasting color. Authentic Ni‘ihau shell lei are carefully strung together by hand by artisans, who are experts in this art. The value of each lei is determined by the availability of the shells used. The price of a Ni‘ihau shell lei is directly related to its quality. Situated at the junction of two highways, the family-owned and operated Old Hawaiian Trading Post carries a wide selection of

quality gifts and souvenirs, but Ni‘ihau shell lei and Tahitian black pearl jewelry handpicked in Tahiti are their specialty. Browse through their collection for quality gifts for special ones back home. In 1887, Queen Kapi‘olani and Princess Lili‘uokalani attended Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in England. At that time, they received solid gold bracelets with their names etched in Old English lettering filled with black enamel. When the royal pair returned to Hawai‘i, they gave similar bracelets to other members of the royal family. This is the start of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry. Robert’s Jewelry has helped to continue this Hawaiian tradition for more than 65 years. Select from 14kt gold or sterling silver bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants handcrafted with traditional to contemporary designs. Your forever gift will be a treasure passed from one generation to the next.

you feel like taking a dip. Be aware of ocean conditions before venturing into Hawai‘i’s waters. They’re different from your hometown beach, so take precautions. Heed any posted warning signs and check with lifeguards about ocean conditions. Remember, “If you’re in doubt, don’t go out!” Check out our beach guide on page 82.

Adrenaline Junkies!Let your inner thrillseeker loose with high-f lying adventures via an amazing helicopter f light above the lush Garden Isle or while zipping across the tree canopy. Let go of your inhibitions and f ly! If you’re afraid of heights, then perhaps a horseback or ATV ride might be more to your liking. However, don’t discount your inner strength on a whim. Challenge yourself. The views are so worth it! Turn the pages for more ways to really experience the best of Kaua‘i.

CRUISINGThe RoadwaysThe Garden Isle doesn’t have a public bus system to access all of its top attractions, so a rental vehicle is your best bet for sightseeing. You call the shots, so take your time exploring the island. Remember, you’re on vacation, so make the journey the joy, and not just the destination.

ISLE SIGHTSBy BusLeave the driving and parking woes to a professional and opt for a Roberts Hawaii bus tour to either Waimea Canyon or Waimea Canyon & Fern Grotto. Take in the beauty of Waimea Canyon’s chasms, then enjoy a boat ride up Wailua River to the uniquely beautiful Fern Grotto.

The river’s journey begins on the slopes of Mount Wai‘ale‘ale, a dormant crater that stands as a testament to the

fiery beginnings of Kaua‘i’s eden-like beauty. At 5,243 feet, Wai‘ale‘ale (Hawaiian for “rippling waters”) is considered one of the rainiest spots on earth. Its height, conical shape and position in the island chain create the trifecta of weather conditions for abundant rainfall. From the summit, the river travels nearly 10 miles down the southeast face emptying out its liquid cargo in two popular and easily accessible waterfalls: the 80-foot Wailua Falls

and Opaeka‘a Falls (Map G:N10). “Opaeka‘a” means “rolling shrimp,” many of which were once plentiful in the stream. But the journey doesn’t end there. The winding f low of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Its lushness is attributed to the river’s tendency to overf low its banks depositing nutrient-rich sediments along the river’s edge. Rich soil, coupled with the ancient Hawaiian’s acumen for horticulture, made the region a natural breadbasket. Tributaries carry the river inland allowing for the construction of fishponds. And while shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas. Shift into low gear with a lazy boat ride on Wailua River with Smith’s Fern Grotto Cruise. Started in 1946 by Walter Smith, Sr. and his wife, the family business continues four generations later. Hear the songs and stories of ancient Hawai‘i, and get a hula lesson too. Once at the landing, enjoy a short nature walk through a rainforest to the lush Fern Grotto.

There’s one thing you can normally count on when playing golf in Hawai‘i: wind! Most golfers end up swinging too hard to try and overpower the wind. This makes them fall off balance resulting in poor golf swings and poor golf shots. Balance is the key in any golf swing, but especially when playing in the wind. Take two to three more clubs than normal and swing easier to maintain good balance throughout the swing. This will also help take off some spin on the golf ball resulting in straighter golf shots. The saying is true, “Swing easy when it’s breezy!”Courtesy scott ashworth pga director of golf kauai lagoons golf club

Once you see the Napali Coast, it will forever remain in your memory as one of the most beautiful spots on Earth.

The serrated-edged cliffs reach for the sky and abruptly fall into the ocean. Beautiful waterfalls and swift f lowing streams continue to carve out these rugged valleys and shape the shorelines. The ancient Hawaiian people favored these shores because of their easy access to typically “hard-to-catch” ocean delicacies.Extensive stone foundations and walls remain on the valley f loors, remnants of once thriving Hawaiian settlements. Ke‘e Beach is the furthest point for all vehicles. To the east

is Ha‘ena Beach Park with sheltered picnic tables. To the west of Ke‘e Beach is the widely known Kalalau Trail, one of the world’s premier hikes. The first two miles of the trail open to all is a popular day hike. It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. Be aware that crossing Hanakapi‘ai Stream is dangerous when it becomes swollen due to recent rain; wait until it subsides to cross. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it ends at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path. To tackle this advanced hike, a permit is mandatory, as well as sufficient food, water and shelter. Map G.

Cruise the awe-inspiring Napali Coast Situated on the north shore of Kaua‘i, the cliffs of the Napali Coast stand among the sheerest in the world. One of your best vacation adventures will be exploring this remote coast by sea. Take a boat ride or rafting excursion along the coast and see dolphins, f lying fish and other marine life, in addition to beautiful turquoise waters. Guides will fill you in on the area’s history, plus point out sea caves and ancient Hawaiian sites. For your very own close up of a visiting humpback whale, be sure to ask about whale watching tours available from November to April. Sail on a catamaran specially designed to navigate the coastal waters with the folks at Blue Dolphin Charters. On the other hand, if you’re up for more of an adventure, they also offer raft tours. Learn about Hawaiian legends and see the coastal landmarks as you “talk story” with the captain and crew. Morning or afternoon tours are available serving up either a continental breakfast or deli lunch; ask about snorkeling and scuba diving. Sunset cruises offer a dinner option. The husband and wife team of Captain Lani Swain and his wife Debbie has been the cornerstone of Catamaran Kahanu since 1985. As a guest, you’ll get to share in their love of the island, its people and learn about the Hawaiian culture. Also enjoy the ride aboard the specially designed catamaran that allows passengers to get up close to the amazing sea caves and waterfalls along the Napali Coastline. Daily tours offer swimming, snorkeling and a sunset dinner cruise.

Take advantage of the free 24-Hour Interisland Gear Return too. Also, rent a snorkel set for a week and get SB’s 250-page fish photo book, “Every Fish Tells a Story,” for $7.50 (regularly $28). Kayaking Get down close to the water and power your way across the surface while enjoying the surrounding scenery and hearing the pleasing sound of paddle in water.

If you’ve never kayaked before, ease into the experience on the “Class Zero” Wailua River via two family-owned and operated outfitters, Ali‘i Kayaks and Kayak Wailua. Wailua River is one of the most perfect locations for all experience levels, and the best place for families and beginners. In addition, both companies include an added hike to their kayak itinerary. Along your river journey, learn about the area’s history, possibly visit some significant ancient Hawaiian sites and see two popular and accessible waterfalls, Opaeka‘a Falls and Wailua Falls.

Hawaii Tourism Japan

The 20-mile long Wailua River is edged by lush junglescapes, home to ancient Hawaiian heiau (temples).

ANINI BEACH PARKThis beach is protected by a long fringing reef and is among one of the best swimming beaches on the north shore. Great for families. Also good for snorkeling. Picnic areas, restrooms, showers. Map C:D16.

The beautiful beaches and sparkling ocean that surround Kaua‘i are wonderful vacation playgrounds. But before heading out to play, talk to your concierge or an activity provider about specific beach features, its surrounding waters and potential, invisible rip currents. For your safety, community volunteers have installed Rescue Tubes, 10 foot high tubes with personal flotation devices used to stabilize a distressed swimmer. If you see one at the beach, be sure to read about their usage.

SALT POND BEACH PARKThis west side beach got its

name from the folks who still use the beach’s salt ponds to

make Hawaiian salt. A partially protected reef provide good

swimming conditions year-round, tidepools, sunset views. Lifeguard

on duty. Map D:C20.

LYDGATE STATE PARKOnce a place of refuge in ancient Hawai‘i, it’s now a good place for picnickers. Excellent swimming area for kids, picnic area and a community playground in the Lihu‘e/Kalapaki region. Lifeguard on duty. Map B:D18.

HANALEI BAY BEACH PARKEnjoy spectacular vistas and great

swimming conditions. The view from here was made famous in

the movie musical “South Pacific.” Beware of occasional rough ocean

conditions. Lifeguard on duty. Map C:C11.

PO‘IPU BEACH PARKConsidered one of America’s “Best

Beaches” according to the Travel Channel, it’s located on Kaua‘i’s

south shore. Great conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving.

THIS WEEK KAUAI THIS WEEK KAUAI

I mean you, Bubba,& Li’l Bubba too––

Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry.

Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime.

The Bubba s n o r k e l s are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today.

FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!

All Islands 8-5 Every DayKapaa 823-9433 • Koloa 742-2206

No snuks, leaks, or pond scum in the gear wash.
