lookout at kilauea lighthouseKaua‘i’s northernmost point Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge—a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary—sits on a peninsula at the northernmost point of Kaua‘i perched 200 feet above the ocean.

Historic Significance This wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970. It’s closed to the public, but the structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight.

Also the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has a presence, with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413, Map C:E20.

THIS WEEK KAUAI

We are spellbound and captivated with the incredible grace and mammoth size of the humpback whale. If you have never experienced viewing one of the world’s largest mammals in the ocean, go for a once-in-a-lifetime whale watching excursion during the months of January through April. While summers in Alaska are devoted to feeding, winters in Hawai‘i are focused on reproduction. The warm, relatively calm waters off Kaua‘i’s south and western shores—particularly the channel between west Kaua‘i and the little island of Ni‘ihau—are conducive to the survival of newborns and calves. According to research findings,

the first groups of whales arriving are usually mothers with one-year-old calves. Next come sexually immature whales (under the age of five), followed by mature males and mating females. The last ones to arrive are pregnant females or mothers with newborns. Calves can gain 100 pounds a day during the first weeks of life, and nearly double in length in the first year. On average, adults weigh 40 tons while males average 42 feet and females 45.

Observing whale behaviors The fun of whale watching is understanding the behavioral patterns of these marine mammals. Some of their actions include:• Tailslaps- a whale slaps its flukes against the water’s surface in either a normal or inverted position.• Play behavior- when a whale tosses around inanimate objects such as plastic bags, pieces of seaweed or other ocean debris, much like humans playing tag.• Spy hopping- a marine mammal will position itself vertically in the water, with its head out of the water, often rotating on its axis.

THIS WEEK KAUAI

Whenever visiting new or different places and cultures, one of the easiest ways to acclimate is with dining choices. The flavors of the tropics, along with produce from

local farmers, are infused into the many dishes to be found on Kaua‘i.

AMERICAN Style, Island FLAIR On Kaua‘i, American staples—such as burgers, hot dogs and milk shakes—meet tropical flavors with refreshingly tasty results. Throw into the mix some American comfort foods like meatloaf, pot roast and fried chicken, and you’ll feel like you’ve just discovered a brand new cuisine.

Hawai‘i Regional cuisine Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine is a distinct cooking style in the forefront of the culinary world, developed around 1991 by leading island chefs. These culinary innovators use ingredients from local growers and combine them with cooking methods from the chef’s background, be it Asian, American, Pacific Rim or European.

ASIAN It’s not surprising, given the relative proximity of Hawai‘i to the Far East, to find the cuisines of China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. The phrase, ‘‘the more the merrier,’’ aptly describes meals served family style, offering ample dishes for everyone to sample.

Farm to Table Many isle chefs use produce, meats and other ingredients grown by Kaua‘i farmers, many of whom grow organic. Farm-fresh flavors are distinct and memorable plus you’ll get lots of nutritional value in every delicious morsel.

THIS WEEK TIP The first Chinese plantation workers came to Hawai‘i they brought a popular snack. Called li hing mui (roughly translating to traveling plum), this treat is made of preserved fruits that are cracked or split to expose the seed. They are then flavored with a combination of salt, sugar and spice for a sweet, salty and sour sensation. Popular li hing fruits include plum, mango, cherry and lemon peel. Local stores carry large glass jars filled with a variety of crackseed.

Often held to celebrate a special occasion—such as a baby’s first birthday or graduation—a Kaua‘i lu‘au feast is an opportunity to become a part of the ‘ohana (extended family). A private or romantic beachside locale, fun audience participation and friendly Hawaiian hospitality merge to create a warm and inviting ambiance; one that ensures an unforgettable evening. Casual attire is suggested. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a lei and hug of aloha. A photographer is usually on-hand to capture the introduction; purchase is optional. You may also have a chance to see the imu ceremony, where the secrets of Hawaiian-style slow cooking are revealed. An imu is a traditional man-made underground oven. Be sure to go on an empty stomach to taste all of the Hawaiian and popular local foods.

Traditional Hawaiian dishes include poi (a starch dish made from taro root), lomi lomi salmon (raw salted salmon, fresh tomatoes and onion) and haupia (a coconut milk custard-style dessert).

The torchlighting ceremony begins when the conch shell is sounded at sunset. Then you’ll watch a live show unfold, a mythical journey back to ancient Hawai‘i. By the evening’s end, you’ll want to linger just a while longer before bidding aloha to your newly expanded circle of friends.

Just as Hawai‘i boasts its own apparel style—alohawear—it also has its own unique jewelry styles. They include Hawaiian heirloom jewelry, Ni‘ihau shell lei (pictured at left), Tahitian pearls, and shell jewelry. The tradition of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry began around 1887. Hawai‘i’s Queen Kapiolani and Princess Lili‘uokalani attended Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in England, where they received gifts of solid gold bracelets with their names carved in old English lettering. Upon their return, the Hawaiian royals had similar bracelets made for their relatives, beginning a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Kaua‘i’s island neighbor, Ni‘ihau (known as the “Forbidden Isle”), is the source of the delicate white, yellow, blue and rare gold shells that are collected, sorted, finely drilled and painstakingly strung into necklaces and chokers by Ni‘ihau residents. These shell garlands are usually of museum quality; ask the retailer for a certificate of authenticity.

Surround yourself with swaying palm trees, petroglyphs, pineapples or hibiscus by slipping on alohawear. Aloha shirts and mu‘umu‘u—the staple of every islander’s wardrobe—come in styles suitable for casual, business or dressy affairs. You might start with a cotton aloha shirt that will keep you cool all day long, or a roomy, cotton mu‘umu‘u that allows the tradewinds to blow up from your toes. If your upscale event specifies island attire, you have options. Specialty mu‘umu‘u are adorned with ruffle lei necklines and hems or other enhancements and in below-the-knee or floor lengths. Men may fall for a soft, “silkie” aloha shirt with mother-of-pearl shell buttons you’d never think to tuck in. Alohawear is especially popular

in the office on Fridays. The last day of the work week is nicknamed Aloha Friday after the popular song with the lyrics of, “It’s Aloha Friday, no work till Monday...”. Whatever alohawear style you decide to wear, it will bring the aloha experience along, wherever you are.

See where a European explorer set foot centuries ago, introducing the island to the world. Fly high above towering fluted cliffs and one of the world’s wettest spots. Float down a winding river to see culturally important

sites, explore a golfer’s paradise...experience this and more on Kaua‘i!

Kaua‘i’s top beaches There is an unmistakably captivating and picturesque quality at all of the Garden Isle beaches. You’ll find 50 miles of white or golden sand fringing the roughly circular shaped island. You may even spot the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, known to appear for a nap on the sunny beaches of Po‘ipu.

Flying High Kaua‘i is the oldest of the main Hawaiian islands and mostly inaccessible by car. This fact happily suggests the best way to view the island’s hidden treasures is on a helicopter tour. You’ll fly into the very center of Kaua‘i to see Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, with dozens of waterfalls spilling over its imposing cliff walls, emptying into the majestic, winding Wailua River.

take a stroll or hike a trail There are three national gardens and a handful of private ones to choose from. Also, the diversity of many hiking trails—in both geography and climate—provides unforgettable views and photo opportunities. For detailed information, visit hawaiitrails.org.

THIS WEEK TIP The beautiful beaches and sparkling ocean on Kaua‘i are wonderful vacation playgrounds. But before heading out to play, talk to your concierge or an activity provider about specific beach features, its surrounding waters and potential, invisible rip currents. For your safety, community volunteers have installed Rescue Tubes, 10 foot high tubes with personal flotation devices used to stabilize a distressed swimmer. If you see one at the beach, be sure to read about their usage.

its lush greenery and flourishing tropical flowers. On the south shore in historical Lawa‘i Valley you’ll find McBryde Garden, a National Tropical Botanical Garden (Map E:E8). Nicknamed ‘‘The Grand Canyon of the Pacific’’ by author Mark Twain, the Waimea Canyon is a majestic sight. The canyon rests at the end of a very scenic drive up Highway 552-Koke‘e Road. At ten miles long, a mile wide and over 3,600 feet deep, this chasm has four million-year-old lava rock and displays variegated hues of red, purple, green and

blue. Ask the staff at Koke‘e Natural History Museum about seasonal guided hikes. For more info call the museum at 808-335-9975.

ExploretheAmazingNapaliCoast Situated on the north shore of Kaua‘i, the cliffs of the Napali coast stand among the sheerest in the world. The serrated-edges

and cathedral-like spires jut into the sky and drop from view into the ocean. Though it’s one of the most remote regions in the world, the Napali coastline is accessible by foot, air or sea. Experience a boat ride or rafting excursion along the Napali coastline. Your guides will point out sea caves and ancient Hawaiian sites. The hidden interior valleys of Napali can only be seen from a helicopter tour, weather permitting. See pods of playful dolphins in the ocean and take a whale watching tour from January to May.

One of America’s “Best Beaches” according to the

Travel Channel. On Kaua‘i’s south shore. Great conditions

for snorkeling and scuba diving. Lifeguard on duty.

Snorkeling & Diving Snorkeling is a fun activity for all ages and levels of experience. Vendors offer a range of snorkel gear equipment for rent. A good place for beginners to start is Po‘ipu Beach Park (Map G:F9) at the tombolo area. There is also a protected cove at Salt Pond Beach Park (Map E:C19) near Hanapepe. Most scenic boat tours also include snorkel stops. Divers have an abundance of opportunities to explore various spectacular undersea locations around the Garden Isle. See colorful coral, undersea caverns, jewel tone tropical fish, sea turtles, curious dolphins and more. Activity providers have professional trained guides and offer a variety of dive options as well as classes.

Surfing Surfing as both sport and transportation is important in Hawai‘i’s history, dating back to the 15th century. Over the years, surfing has branched out into many variations. For example, in body or boogie boarding, you’ll ride waves on four-foot boards in a reclining or kneeling position. In stand up paddle (SUP) boarding, no waves are needed as you glide on top of the water. You’ll get a full body workout. and it’s great fun for the whole family.

Kaua‘iBestBeaches Weather conditions—especially during the winter months—can change rapidly. Check in with your hotel information desk and the on-duty lifeguard about wind and surf conditions. Beware of dangerous shorebreak. And, when in doubt, don’t go out into the water!
