This week, come to Seminar prepared to provide a concise discussion on the issue
of gender and cultural bias in intelligence testing. What are your
thoughts on this subject? Is there sufficient evidence to support the claim that intelligence tests are biased? How
might stereotype threat pay a role in the issue of bias in testing?
Conclude with an example of how emotional intelligence (or the lack of it)
influences your everyday life, and the lives of other people you know. Do you
think that EIQ is a good way to measure someone’s intelligence? Why or why
not?
eugenicsThe misguided proposal thatone could improve thehuman species byencouraging or permittingreproduction of only thosepeople with geneticcharacteristics judgeddesirable.
stereotype threatPerformance decrementsthat are caused by theknowledge of culturalstereotypes.
For instance, research has found that because Asian students are aware of the cultural stereotype that “Asians are good at math,” reminding them of this fact before they take a difficult math test can improve their performance on the test (Walton & Cohen, 2003).[88] On the other hand, sometimes these beliefs are negative, and they create negative self-fulfilling prophecies such that we perform more poorly just because of our knowledge about the stereotypes.
emotional intelligenceThe ability to identify, assess, manage, and control one’semotions.
