Since the announcement of my appointment as Pastor of Saint James, many people have called, texted, emailed, and even sent letters (actual physical messages!) to congratulate me. What strikes me about such words of congratulations is that they really speak more about the parish than about the pastor. I have heard a lot of “Oh, you’re going to a beautiful church!” But mostly the messages have been about the goodness of the Parish — that is, of the parishioners (my favorite: “There are a lot of great families there!...No, Father, I mean a lot!”), the IHM sisters, the staff, the school, the priests, and so on. In short, the “congratulations” was not because I had accomplished anything but because I have been entrusted with something great. Really, the congratulations belong to Father Posey, who for the past 13 years has labored so diligently and well at Saint James. The strength of the Parish’s finances, physical plant, and staff are a tribute to his goodness and hard work. The even greater tribute is the reputation of Saint James as a faithful, joyful, and generous parish. I look forward to building on what he has accomplished. Of course, I am not a complete stranger to Saint James. I grew up in the neighboring Parish, Saint John in McLean (back before it was Beloved!). My first assignment in the Diocese was as a seminarian for a summer at Saint James. That was back in 1996, with Monsignor Roy Cosby, Father Paul Dudzinski, and Father Michael Kelly of happy memory. It was a great summer, but too short. I hope to have a longer stay this time around. For the past almost seven years I have not been in parish work (I hope that doesn’t frighten you…). I lived at the Saint Rose of Lima Priests Retirement Villa. No, I was not retired, and I am not coming out of retirement. I served as the Director of the Villa, overseeing the physical plant and the needs of the retired priests (and one bishop!) who live there. Of course, I assisted at parishes when I could. On Sundays, I filled in here and there throughout the Diocese. That was a blessing inasmuch as I got to know more parishes and the Diocese much better. But a priest always desires to be in a parish, and a spiritual father always desires a family. So I look forward to being engaged once again in the life of a parish, which Pope Francis calls the “family of families.” So, I look forward to getting to know all of you. Please be patient as I adjust to being a pastor again. Since I also continue in my assignment as Vicar for Clergy, I may need more time in that adjustment. Please also be patient as I have not been blessed with a good memory and will need some time (i.e., years) to remember your names! Most of all, please know of my prayers for all of you, that the Lord be with you as you walk the way He has traced out for us. ~Fr. Scalia

Volunteers Needed to Count Offertory Are you good with numbers? The St. James Collection Counters are looking to add members to their team! Responsible stewardship de-mands that the weekly gifts from the faithful, which represent the monetary lifeblood of the parish community, be properly

safeguarded, counted, deposited, and recorded. Our Collection Counters team is a group of honest, capable, and fun individuals who share each other's company while they share the burden of offertory stewardship. If you are interested and have time

Guided Children’s Adoration With Father Oetjen—July 6 Ever want to come to Eucharistic Adoration but worried that the little ones would misbehave or be a distraction to others? Join Fr. Oetjen for a Guided Children's Adoration on the first Saturday of July at 10am. The time in adoration will be interspersed with prayers, guided meditation, sacred music, changing postures (enough to keep the young ones engaged!), and it will conclude with Benediction. All are welcome, including families and children of all ages!

Bulletin Changes Ahead—Starting July 7 Commencing with the July 7 issue of our bulletin, you will see some changes in its format. To make it easier to find essential information about the Parish, we are moving most of the information now found on Page Two, to the cover. The cover will also have a new look. You will now find Father Scalia’s weekly Column and the Stewardship Column on Page Two, and Page Three will feature the list of Rectory Staff, as well as the “This Week at St. James” highlight calendars. Page Four will have a new look as well, as we will list the Feast Day under the date of each day’s Mass Intentions. Page Five will stay the same, but articles will now appear on Pages Six through Nine in boxes, rather than in the bands across the page as they do now—this will help us inject more color and life into the pages. Page Ten will still contain the weekly calendar and the weekly reflection question, as well as our weekly article on a selected Patron Saint.

Patron Saint—St. Adjutor, Patron Saint of Swimmers A Norman knight who fought in the First Crusade, enemy forces twice captured St. Adjutor. Each time he prayed to his favorite saint, Saint Mary Magdalen, to intercede for him, and she did. The second time, she showed St. Adjutor that he could break his chains and swim away from his captors, which is how he freed himself. After returning to his native Normandy, St. Adjutor built a chapel in honor of St. Mary Magdalen. Near the

chapel, in the river Seine, there was a fierce whirlpool that had been the site of many drownings. St. Adjutor along with the Bishop of Normandy, were able to bless and still the whirlpool, with St. Adjutor throwing the leg-chains he had worn in captivity, into its maw, saying: “It is as easy for God to free people from this whirlpool as it was for him to free me from my chains.” Because of this miracle, St. Adjutor is known as the Patron Saint of Swimmers.
