Measure while you cook

Pick something to cook or bake with your child, and see what kind of measuring magic unfolds with questions like these.

• When should we start? Have your youngster read through the recipe and estimate the prep time. She can add that to the cooking time to tell you when you need to begin. For example, if you want to eat at 6:00 p.m., she might figure out: “30 minutes of prep + 45 minutes cooking = 1 hour 15 minutes, so we should start at 4:45 p.m.” Then, when you put the dish in the oven, she could note the time, set the timer, and say when it will be done. She’ll be learning about elapsed time—as well as helping you make dinner.

• Which measurements are the same? As you cook, let your child explore different ways to measure ingredients. If you need a cup of milk, ask how many ounces that is (8). Tip: Liquid measuring cups have hash marks for ounces. When you need ¼ cup of flour, suggest that she measure it in tablespoons (she’ll find that 4 tablespoons = ¼ cup). Encourage her to work out other measurements, such as 3 teaspoons for each tablespoon. She’ll get more familiar with measurement equivalents and also be more comfortable in the kitchen.

Snack attack

“I’m starving!” When your child bursts through the door after school or day care, she’s probably hungry. Try these tips for healthy snacks that will give her the energy she needs to play and do homework.

Stock the kitchen

Whatever is in the house is what your youngster will eat—so shop with that in mind. Get interesting fruits and vegetables in different colors. Buy mango or peach salsa, and let your child dip in veggie sticks (carrots, celery, jicama). Stock popcorn to air pop (rather than getting less healthy microwave popcorn). Then, offer her choices. She’ll have a say in what she eats, but she’ll be choosing only from healthy foods.

Have a mini-meal

Breakfast or lunch foods can make a good snack. You could serve oatmeal with raisins and nuts or tuck scrambled eggs into a pita pocket. Or try individual pizzas on whole-wheat English muffins. Top each half with a little tomato sauce, shredded low-fat mozzarella cheese, and vegetables (sliced mushrooms, chopped onions), and bake until the cheese melts.

Build your own

Let your child get creative in the kitchen, and she’ll be likely to eat the results. She can make kebabs by threading fruit (grapes, melon chunks) and low-fat cheese cubes onto toothpicks. Put out cookie cutters for her to cut sandwiches into fun shapes. Or she could spread peanut or almond butter on rice cakes, apples, or bananas and decorate them with raisins and nuts.

Celebrate “Walk to School Day” with Panther Run Elementary!

Panther Run will be participating in International Walk to School Day, on October 7, 2015. Walk to School Day is recognized around the world as a day that embraces the benefits of walking by encouraging kids to walk and bike to school. Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community. More info will be forthcoming in future editions of the Panther Prints.

Things to remember when walking 1. Always walk on the sidewalk. Walk on the sidewalk if there is one. 2. If no sidewalk, walk facing traffic. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk on

the road, be sure to walk facing traffic. 3. Be safe, be seen. Brightly colored clothing makes it easier for drivers to see you

during the daytime. But at night, you need to have a flashlight or wear special reflective material on your shoes, cap and jacket or on your arms or legs that bounce the car’s lights off you and back to the driver. This light should caution the driver that there is something or someone moving and they should slow down and be careful.

Safety tips for crossing the street: 1. Stop at the curb or the edge of the road if there is no curb. 2. Stop and look left, then right, then left again for moving cars before you step into

the street. 3. If you see a car, wait until it goes by. The look left, right, left again until no cars

are coming. 4. If a car is parked where you are crossing, look to make sure there is no driver and

that the car is not running. 5. Next, go to the edge of the car and look left-look right-look left again to see if

cars are coming. 6. When no cares are coming, walk – so not run – across the road. Keep looking left

right left for cars while you are crossing.

Our students are asking for your help in col-lecting boxes of fun character Band-Aids during the month of September. These Band-Aids will be donated to Joe DiMag-gio’s Children’s Hospital where children with cancer receive their treatments. Something as small as a fun bandage can brighten a

young child’s day.

To help, pick up a box of character Band-Aids while you are out shopping (Dollar

Store is great). Students can drop off their Band-Aid donations at the school through

September 30th.

Students with regular attendance are more likely to read well by third grade and score higher on tests. They also tend to be more engaged in school and feel better about themselves.

Put your child on the path to success with these attendance strategies.

Make school a priority. Every absence (excused or not), can impact a child’s academic achievement. Talk to your child about how important their education is. Make daily routines for homework and waking up on time for school.

Maintain communication with teachers and keep an eye on your child’s academic progress. If your child seems disconnected from school or is prone to skipping class, try signing him or her up for an after-school activity. A report by the University of Minnesota found that students in an after-school program attended 18 more days of school and missed nine fewer than their peers.

Make a plan. If your schedule or transportation situation makes getting your child to school a challenge, ask for assistance. Make a carpool or transportation plan with other parents or family members, or ask your school principal for community programs or school initiatives that may help.

Report In. Know your school’s attendance policies. If an absence or early dismissal is unavoidable, contact your school. If your family’s religious observances fall on school days, let teachers know early in the year which days your child will miss.

Carefully weigh sick days. If your child is sick, talk with your health care provider to determine whether they should stay home from school. If the doctor or nurse recommends that your child stay home, find out exactly how long and on what conditions he or she can return to class (for example, after 24 hours of antibiotics).

Before keeping your children home, make sure they aren’t faking symptoms. Regularly feigning sickness may be a sign that your child is anxious about facing a challenge at school,

such as bullying.

Schedule wisely. Know your school’s calendar, and arrange doctor and dentist appointments after school, on weekends, or during holiday breaks, if possible. Resist the urge to schedule vacations when students will miss school. This gives students the impression that school is not a priority.

Help students complete assignments. When your child has to miss school, make arrangements with teachers

to pick up a packet of make-up work. Ensure that your child follows through, and be available to explain concepts or monitor their work. If your child’s absence will be lengthy (for surgery, for instance), alert teachers as soon as you know and pick up assignments as the days go on.

To stay on track in school, students need to be present every day. Missing 18 or more days of school in a year puts a child’s high school graduation at risk, according to AbsencesAddUp.org, a national chronic absenteeism prevention

campaign. Being absent for just two days every month of the school year can put a child behind academically.
